  • Good if you need a VPN router that's about it

    • +2

I'll take this and a chromecast - makes most tvs smart tvs on travels

      • Plugging it into what..?

Why not just a standard 4G wifi router?

        • +2

@Dyl "Why not just a standard 4G wifi router?"

Why not?, however I am the first to admit that I don't quiet understand the context of your question. Just don't expect a weapons-grade or fully-fledged super-powerful all bells & whistles solution.

Like @cktftw, I have also been using this as a quick and dirty solution for when I am TRAVELLING.
It packs away into a tiny space with a streaming stick (Chromecast with Google TV) taking up very little weight and space in my luggage. To be honest, this little gadget is a no-brainer. and have been using it for nearly 3 years.

I use to travel with a portable Tel$tra 5G WiFi router, but they got greedy with their pricing/recharges over time. Mobile data is still ridiculously overpriced in this country.

          ,

        • Most hotels I stay at have an ethernet port in the rooms, when I went to Hawaii using this + VPN was the only way to watch sports on the TV.

          • @TrafalgarSean: Which vpn do you use?
            Thanks

            • @Averell: At that time I was using PIA maybe, but I left them when they got bought out. Haven't tested current VPN with this router or Aussie tv when overseas, won't get the chance until November.

  • What about getting around captive portal and sharing restricted internet?

    • +1

you can access the captive portal on the router UI.
by sharing restricted internet i assume you mean only one device can be connected, which this can bypass

      • Cool, got one, should be handy when getting around annoying restrictions of internet in hotel, on ship etc

  • So this thing can take a (public) wifi and turn it into another secure wifi? Does it do with hotspot as well?

    • +2

      yes and yes

      • +2

        Thanks!

      • how does that work? If the connection from public wifi to this router is unencrypted, then doesn't your data go thru this anyway only less your device id?

    • +4

Not sure if I understand your question. But I will explain.

This router connected to any public wifi and turn into a secure wifi. Once connected any device can connect to this router and all your devices will be secure.

      Hope this help.

      • Thanks! I was wondering if I needed to put a data sim in it so it works like a portable hotspot lol. But now looking at it, since it's not a modem can it take a sim?

Also not sure if relevant, but can telcos block the ability for you to hotspot? I was looking at some plans for KL and the higher plans specifically write "no hotspot restrictions"

        • +2

          Doesn’t take a SIM
Think of it like a secured repeater and so much more.
Has an inbuilt web browser for connecting to hotspots that require a login. The hotspot will only see the router as a single user, you can have as many devices on your private WiFi behind it.

      • only if you have a vpn which would have another cost right?

  • +15

    CommBank router?

    • CommBank router?… Yes, if you take this into any CommBank branch, wave it about in the air and threaten to hack into their systems if you can't get better counter service. It should look bright enough to attract some attention ;)

      • +10

the bargain image posted here looks like the CBA logo. not sure if you got the point so thought i'd spell it out.

  • Is there a newer version with USB-C charging available yet?

  • no USB C charging :|
    ?

  • Can I set this up between my modem and my router to block ads on my network?

    Internet>modem>this>router>PC?

  • I read a review saying this can be used to shared cruise wifi. Cruise wifi is $15 pp/day. This bargain extends to make that now a bargain. Thanks OP!

    • +1

Friend has used an older style box to do exactly that … 1 connection to he + Mrs. Remember on cruise ships interweb access is very patchy when sailing.

Also good to augment with a travel data sim for when ship is within shore range / at port in a an old phone (becomes a wifi hotspot) if interweb access is needed reliably (faster speeds, more data).

  • This or the TP-Link AC750. I know this doesn't have 5ghz wifi but is that going to be missed?
