    • I’m generally on 4/3 bars and get really good speeds in inner Melb

      250Mbps on 4G, 320Mbps 5G (consistent Ookla results)

      • Here in Brizzy under 8Mbps for me most times and that's only if it's not giving out damn errors. I mistakenly chose the 10GB plan when signing up maybe that has something to do with it but either way pretty much unusable.

        • +1

There’ve been quite a few comments lately that Belong has become unusable due to excessive congestion.

I’m not sure how it’d work for Telstra’s wholesale network to become overloaded while the limited extra capacity of its retail nodes allow for unfettered use for Boost/Telstra customers but I guess it’s possible.

          4G or 5G?

          • @0jay: The plan is 4G I think.

            • +1

@dins: If you have a 5G handset it might be worth speaking to the company on the phone to get it bumped to a 5G plan just to feel out whether or no there’s a benefit.

They were fine with me jumping up a plan without penalty ie I got to stay on the $1 a month deal

The only penalty to dropping down a plan if you wanted to do that later is you would lose unused data.

              • @0jay: Cheers bud might give that a try.

    • +1

metro Brisbane - the 4G service for my home internet has been fantastic. I will be staying on after the trial is up

  • What are the port out & back in restrictions, 1 day, 30 days or other.

  • -4

OP, you guys should make it clear to customers that there'd be a surcharge on credit card. No biggie since the total is small, but still, you need to be transparent.

  • Been trouble free since moving over glad I did !

  • +2

Moved to tangerine 2 months free. Now gonna resign up with mate last day of deal and activate after 2 months finish so will have 2 months out of 3.

    Overall, 7 months for $6

    • If I order by 31 May, how long do I have to activate?

I'm about to finish my first 3 month promo with Mates and move to Tangerine for 2 months. Would be ideal to active (for second time) with Mates around 10 July.

      • Mate billing cycle is when you sign up , you could activate anytime in the 3 months offer period

        • +1

Hats off to anyone who successfully gets two bites of the cherry, but I'm not prepared to risk it. The offer T&C's state, "(b) Offer not applicable if mobile plan is not purchased and activated during the promotion period." The ‘promotion period’ is defined earlier in the T&C's as, "Between 15 February 2023 and 31 May 2023."

There's also, "(a) Offer not applicable to a service number that has been attached to any other MATE mobile plan during the promotion period." I can't help but feel that Mate would argue that this rules out taking up the offer twice (with the same number, ie; Mate offer > port out > port back in to Mate offer again).

          • @Colin2905: Port out➡️port in is usually considered as new customer with any mobile provider

Also the billing cycle starts ($1 per month), the day you order the sim, not when you activate it.

So its safe to assume you can double dip

All i say is take screen shots and use a prepaid card with less than $10 on it.

Any issue, take it to TIO as long as you have screen shots proving $1 per month. Doubt they will fight it as it will cost them more to do so.

    • Thanks, I was looking for what to churn to after this ends. Does Tangerine billing date start when sim is activated? Don't wanna get caught out again lol

Edit : oh promo ended :( back to boost I go

      • Lyca $1 per month for 3 months on 10Gb plan

        Ends tonight

        • Need to buy and activate by tonight or there’s a bit of breathing space for activation?

          • +1

@0jay: Just need to order tonight . Im assuming the plan you select is setup on your account for when you activate the sim

  • +1

That's perfect. So I'm going to swap to Tangerine for my 2 months, buy second Mates sim by 31 May and swap back to Mates. Thx for the info.

  • I'm like 8km from Mate's location (Wetherill park), ordered on 29 Apr, still haven't got the sim. Bl00dy h3ll. It would've been faster if they allow click and collect. Checked auspost and the parcel is delayed, stuck at Strathfield. Is this stupid Auspost or Mate?

  • Just wondering if you port out to a prepaid sim (e.g. boost), does the plan automatically end with Mate?

  • Can I change a plan option after the first 3 months? I’ve just got a 5G phone, so not sure how much data I would use. If I chose a higher plan for 3 months, after than can I downgraded the plan if I work out I don’t need as much data?

    • +1

You can drop down a plan without penalty but you wont bank the data from the old plan.

    • +3

"All MATE mobile plans include 500GB of data banking.

Any data in your data bank is forfeited if your mobile plan is downgraded to a lower-cost monthly plan, or if you move from a 5G-enabled plan to a 4G plan. Your banked data will remain if you upgrade to a higher-cost monthly plan, or switch from a 4G plan to a 5G plan."

  • I have ported my number to another provider. Is there anything I need to inform Mate of? Or does their service and billing end.

Sorry, just not familiar with the details of porting in Australia

    • +2

I also ported out on Friday. Called Mates on Monday to confirm my account is closed and shows zero billing. Based on that, I would say you are all set.

      • +1

Thank you! They called me before I read your comment and said the exact same thing. Easy as, just port out and it’s all done.

  • I didn't receive my bill of the 2nd month by email.
Is that because I switched off "receive marketing communications"?
Or is that normal? they just don't send out invoice?

    • i get a monthly invoice by email. i have marketing communications enabled but haven't received any marketing in the last 2 months

  • I'm on Galaxy S22U in Sydney.
Switched from JbHiFi Telstra to Mates, and reception is significantly worse. I live close to the airport and work up north in Kuringai. Both locations and on the commute , connection is unreliable. Sometimes going from no connection to full bars in the place.
I'll give it a try for 3 months, but if this keeps going I need to change back .

    • +1

I found tangerine better than mate.
With mate barely get 30Mbps. Tangerine 240Mbps most of the time

Edit: checked now tangerine and got 347Mbps

    • Sometimes going from no connection to full bars in the place.

seems strange, isn't mate just using telstra's network?

      • Seems like even telstra wholesale network has different levels

  • Has anyone tried porting out and porting back to Mate? Wonder if you still get $1 per month? 🤔

    • Im going to try.
I assume you would need new email and credit card
Waiting 31st of may to reserve a port and then transfer back from tangerine 30 june

      • I just bought a new sim under the same account. Then I just realised I bought it too early. Lol

      • Just want to be sure my plan for this is right.

Must order Mates by 31 May for promo price. Port back to Mates after 2 months with Tangerine. I'm only getting one month-ish at the Mates $1 promo rate because the clock starts ticking at on the purchase date.

        Have I got this right?

        • Yeh. Thats why im waiting till 31st
          So ill get 2 months

        • My interpretation of the T&C's is that you must also activate by 31/5/23. I also feel that you're taking a risk with porting the same number back to Mate Mobile, but others seem to think that you'll be OK.

          • @Colin2905: But its already active (as in billing starts) from when you buy it

            • @easternculture: I agree that the billing cycle starts on the day of purchase, but I interpret "activate" as becoming active on the network (ie; when the port is completed, in this case). We might have to agree to disagree.

              • @Colin2905: My account have 2 numbers. I bought the second number 2 months later. And the second number's billing cycle is the same as my first number. And I bought it only a few days before billing date.😑
So in case of being charged the full price I will port out the second number before the 4th billing date.

              • @Colin2905: Mate Mobile is a post paid service, not prepaid where you go and buy a SIM starter kit and then the plan suddenly begins on a date which you activate the SIM card. It's why they send you a monthly bill and you've got to pay up 2 weeks later for it. A post paid service the same as any other.

The original billing date is also the plan activation date regardless if the SIM card has even been mailed out yet. It's different from a prepaid mobile service when the plan doesn't begin until the SIM card is activated (even although you paid up money for the SIM starter kit). Unfortunately that's just how it is.

So unfortunately when it comes to Mate Mobile it doesn't matter if you haven't yet got the SIM card activated. The plan clock is still running which began on the date of SIM purchase which also instantly activates the account (with your username and password). But you do get credited back any days that you hadn't yet activated the sim card as account credit.

I know as i'm into my fourth month as a Mate Mobile customer but i only got 60c account credit for the days i hadn't yet activated the SIM during the first month after purchase. I think i activated the SIM a bit over 2 weeks after purchase.

So i say again you get the $1 deal activated as soon as you purchase the SIM on the date that you buy it and you have the account setup (but that happens during the purchase process), regardless if you wait weeks later to activate the SIM. It's all about the SIM card purchase date. So as long as you actually buy the SIM before the promo date is over you're all good.

                • @hollykryten:

i only got 60c account credit for the days i hadn't yet activated the SIM during the first month after purchase

So you only got two and a half months at $1 a month?

                  • @0jay: No i got all the months at the $1 per month deal, but for the first month i got credited back the days which i had no access to the network (due to not having the SIM card yet activated for over 2 weeks since purchase date). So the first month i paid the $1 in full (when you originally buy the SIM you get charged the $1 for the first month in advance) and then the second month i got billed for 40c because of the account credit applied to the next months bill, and then the third month was billed at $1. The system automatically credits you back for any days you had no access to the network due to being in SIM card unactivated state.

But i suppose you could say i got 2 and half months of actual network access on the deal. The first half of the month i had no network access because as you know you can't access the service until the SIM is activated even although the plan clock is ticking.

    Horrible customer service

  • Has anyone successfully redeemed this twice for the same number?

  • What happen if I do not active the SIM card at all?

    • +2

There’s a $12 fee aligned to recouping cost of sim, postage and packing

      • Thanks for the information. Then I will activate it and port out again. Do I need to wait for some time or I can do it straight away?

        • No idea sorry

  • ref "mobile plan is not purchased and activated during the promotion period" so its nearly 31 may if i order it now and only receive sim after may 31st and activate it in June will i only be charged $1 for the next 3 months? can you stack the referral code with this MATE1 code during sign up? can you use referral credits for the plan renewals later on?

    • +1

If you order it now before the end of the promo sale period you will get the $1 per month deal. In fact when you purchase it during the promo period you get instantly charged and instantly the pay the first $1 (if paid through credit or debit card). You also get the first month paid invoice emailed as a PDF at time of this payment which shows the $1 promo price as proof that you've got the plan. And the plan billing period begins at the date of SIM purchase.

So if you buy it now you get to have the deal. Activate the SIM later when it arrives that doesn't matter as long as you've ordered the SIM and paid the first $1 which includes the first month already paid which instantly activates the plan on the MATE account. That all happens during the SIM order process. However for any days up until you activate the SIM after it arrives you get reimbursed as account credit for any days it remained unactivated to be applied for the following months bill. You will get the $1 for 3 months.

Also for stacking a referral code with the MATE1 code I don't know. My guess the system probably only allows one code only to be used during an order.

  • will one end up receiving shopback credit too for this $1 promo? has anyones tracked ?

  • @rfc850 will this offer be extended? Or does anyone else know?

  • +1

The code is still working for $1/month for the first 3 months

    • Which code did you use. Was is MATE1?.

      • Yes

  • Just added a sim 2nd time using self service and promo code MATE1.
Got order confirmation with PDF stating promo $1 per month for 3 months.

So definetly can be used again

  • +1

Mate is advertising a new promo code TRYMATE but it's only $1 for the first month only. If the previous 3 month code is still working I don't think it will for much longer

    • Yeah not working now

      • Lucky just got it in time yesterday and its been shipped.
Will activate end on month when tangerine free 2 months end

        • Watch and learn

  • +1

Does anyone else utterly confused by how the billing system works.

my service started mid feb to mid May,

however ive been billed at the start of the March, April, May for $1
called up Mate to ask for explanation and they told me they backbill/fwd bill 2 weeks or some thing like that,

I forgot to port out as i was trying to port out to another carrier, im in month 4, and seem to be still charged $1

    • +1

Skim the posts for hollykryten’s comments, she’s demonstrated that you can be billed from account activation (the date you opened your account with the company) but will not be timed for the offer until the sim is activated and you start using the service.

      • Dors that mean you can get the full 3 months at $1 per month starting when you activate SIM?

I had thought the 3 month clock would start ticking at purchase date (31 May).

        • Have a read of holly's posts.

I bailed early but she's been fine for th 3 months from sim activation

    • yeah it is confusing. my billing period starts mid-month, i get invoiced mid-month and i get debited at the end of the month

      • You get charged via credit/debit card exactly 2 weeks after you get the invoice. So that explains the charge at the end of the month.

  • Ok. Same number port out and port back to Mate working.
