About the book

Regarded as the world's oldest military treatise, this compact hardcover volume has instructed officers and tacticians for more than 2,000 years. From its origins in China, The Art of Wartraveled the world to inform the strategies of Napoleon and World War II generals. More recently, it has taken on a new life as a guide to competing successfully in business, law, politics, and sports.
All of The Art of War's concepts retain their value to modern readers, from the prudence of circumventing a strong opponent and taking advantage of a weak one to the wisdom of preparedness and flexibility. Other topics include strategy, tactics, maneuvering, communications, the treatment of soldiers, and the worth of well-trained officers.
Includes an introduction and brief history of Chinese Warfare written by Brig. Gen. Thomas R. Phillips of the U.S. Army, for the 1944 edition.
Study Sun Tzu's five factors of planning, five essentials for victory, and the six ways of courting defeat.
Learn to classify the six types of terrain and the nine varieties of ground warfare.
Prepare for five ways to attack with fire and anticipate possible developments.
Discover the "divine manipulation of the threads" and examine the five classes of spies.
This Ixia Press edition, first published in 2019, is an unabridged republication of the edition originally published in 1944 by The Military Service Publishing Company, Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. The English translation of the text was made by Lionel Giles, M. A., Department of Oriental Books and Manuscripts in the British Museum, and first published in 1910 by Luzac & Co., London.

History enthusiasts, devotees of Chinese philosophy, business leaders, and anyone intrigued by competition and rivalry, and leadership and power, will appreciate this elegant edition of the classic work.

China has been developing balloons with the capability to carry 3 remote release payloads since like 2017..

I can't remember if it was Mike Glover or LaoWhy86/SerpentZA that made a video about it. Some undercover CCP loser stole American university research papers a while back to help the PLA develop these balloons.

I can't wait for the very near, economic collapse of China. 😂

        • +1

You can't seriously believe the crap those guys spew out.

I used to watch their videos before and enjoyed them until I came to the realization all their videos became increasingly ridiculous and ongoing just yellow peril propaganda which have been debunked many times before.

China has developed its own high tech satellites and hypersonic cruise missiles, wtf do you think a slow moving balloon is going to do? China can spy on every corner of the Earth just like the US can now. Do any of us start shooting down satellites of other nations the moment it enters their airspace? It's like believing airships are going to make a comeback in WW3.
People believe anything these days as long as it panders to their own fears and anxiety.

"China experts" like Gordon Chang/Laowhy86/Serpentza have been parroting the economic collapse of China for decades but they have continued to be wrong each time.

          • +1

@kurovon: Strange, LaoWhy86 and SerpentZA had only changed their stance on being pro-China less than half a decade ago..

Also, never heard of that random columinst you mentioned.. Are you sure you're not a wumao? 🤣

Also, "the crap those guys spew out" isn't always as wrong as you're led to believe.. 😅

Try Mike Glovers channel, there's no China shilling, though he just may make a man of you yet.

dominant world language in the 2020-2120s

Lol I can't imagine people would ditch Germanic languages or the standard English/Latin/Roman alphabet used in over 100 languages to learn a completely new system. China has a large population and therefore a large number of L1 speakers, but virtually no L2 speakers which kinda is a bummer if you're doing business outside of China… Even the Chinese speak English to trade partners.

By the way, look up what the word plagiarism means because it's not that :)

Why do people take the advice of a guy who lived in a time when he had almost no access to information?

Even the best scientific minds from over a century ago are pretty questionable to listen to, given how much we've learned since then.

With wikipedia alone you have access to more real world combat data than this guy could have ever hoped to have learned about in his lifetime, and actually see if any of his ideas hold up in the real world at scale. It just feels like pure pop culture celebrity advice stuff.

    • +10

he had almost no access to information?

Since when do OZBers read every book collected free?

      • +2

Much like my game collection. Will sit unplayed for a while.

      • …sssh… I'm on the last chapter of the last free book I "bought"… an no spoilers please. You know who you are :)

    • +6

I agree about the celebrity advice stuff, but it isn't Sun Tzu's fault that 2500 years later that his works have been touted by mumble rappers as self-help books. You can read, appreciate, and enjoy books like this without the expectation that it will give you applicable military command knowledge or turn you into an unstoppable warrior in the office.

      • +2

Are you talking about Russia's awful performance in their war against a much smaller neighbouring country being given aid by NATO and other groups, and trying to spin that as NATO somehow being the one failing?
