Century PS1270 at Bunnings for $34 is also a good option:

    • +1

      Better in fact, right?

      • Now same company

      • Depends - i've always had great experiences with Yuasa batteries

However the bigger factor for these really depends on how well they've been stored (ie. kept within an acceptable charge) and when they were manufactured. I don't think Bunnings or Amazon would be keeping these charged.

        • I thought they ship dry and they add electrolyte and charge at purchase.

          • +2

@lunchbox99: Vast majority of lead acid batteries sold today (like this one) are sealed. They don't need refilling as the electrolyte doesn't evaporate.

            • @joshau: Yes I know that is how the end user deals with them. Surely the retailer must do something to activate them or they could be half dead by the time they are sold.

Seems to be some that are factory sealed and they do have limited shelf life
              https://www.yuasabatteries.com/resources/guides/how-to-activ…

              Also
A SLA (Sealed Lead Acid) battery can generally sit on a shelf at room temperature with no charging for up to a year when at full capacity, but is not recommended. Sealed Lead Acid batteries should be charged at least every 6 – 9 months. A sealed lead acid battery generally discharges 3% every month.

              • +1

@lunchbox99: The retailers do absolutely nothing - and it doesn't really matter if you're going to put the battery into something like a UPS that will immediately charge it to full anyway.

    • Beware that the terminals of the Century will not suit Home Alarm system. I’ve bought and returned.

      • +4

Keep a set of these handy

        • Oh mate, that's so good. If I knew about this I wouldn't have returned it :D

Good price - but of niche appeal.
I paid like $50 for this from battery world last year for sale one.

    • +3

Why is it a niche appeal - most people have an alarm system, many have nbn FTTP etc.

      • +1

For one, I Didn’t realise it had such wide spread use - and two - how many people are going to need it other than when the battery is flat? Pretty rare someone would have it for a ‘just in case scenario’ I would have thought…

I only needed one because my workplace has an electric gate and the battery was stuffed on it.

I definitely don’t have a use for it other than that :/

        • Yeah quite common use, just not well known.

I use one to charge lipo batteries for rc's.

Might pick up more to supercharge kids ride on toys

        • +1

When your alarm says the battery is too old, it beeps at you. A lot. Or at least my Bosch did. You don't want that. Older alarms may not complain but an old battery may not last long when you have power out.

I bought one for a kids ride-on and the ride-on wheel fell off immediately after changing the battery :/ brand new battery just sitting there. fuming

Jaycar also have the same spec battery on sale $28.95

    https://www.jaycar.com.au/12v-7-2ah-sla-back-up-battery-nbn-…

    • +2

Same spec on paper but I've found the Yuasas would generally last longer (at least back when they were made in Japan). Whether they will last 40% longer these days I don't know.

Weight can be a good indicator if specs are to be believed. 2.2kg vs 2.65kg should mean thicker plates.

On a side note, I had an Aldi 40Ah battery connected to my UPS. Had an outage recently, ran on battery for over an hour and died, must have dropped a cell or something now as won't fully recharge but realised have had it on my UPS for over 6 years. The cheap 7ah's I'm lucky to get 2 years.

Not sure what the counterfeit market is like for lead acid batteries, but is there any way to know these are genuine and not just some unbranded trash that only meets half the specs but has the Yuasa label painted on the side ?

      • Who can tell from uploaded photos? The photos may even be of the genuine battery and then the products fake. Even Amazon is known to have bought & sold fakes.

eBay seller rating would be one way to assess the risk.

  • Are these batteries good for use on the NBN box?

    • +2

Yeah but may as well go for the Bunnings one Doge posted for cheaper.

Got exciting thinking the picture was a carton of beer, I cannot drink this.

    • +1

You can probably drink it once, it'll be one hell of a drink though.

Yuasa let us know what it tastes like 🔋 💣

        • +2

Alright, ordered. Will keep in touch possibly

  • I use these for NBN, alarms, UPSs, etc and I've used quite a few. They get 6 to 7 years of life at least.

I would not recommend buying T-Power batteries. Their advertised specs are exaggerated at best, or a complete fabrication at worst. I have purchased probably 12-15 batteries from LANPlus, back when they used to sell SunStone branded batteries, and more recently a batch of 6 T-Power batteries. All of them test way below what they should at the specified discharge rates.

I've switched to buying only CSB-branded batteries for all of our UPS directly from their Australian retailer (Yhi Power). If you buy enough, they come in cheaper than this deal anyway.

Also, keep in mind that even if these batteries met their specifications, they're rated at 9Ah over a 20 hour discharge period! If you're using these in a UPS that is likely to discharge over the period of an hour or two, you'd need to derate this down to about 4-5Ah… and all of that assumes the battery is actually 9Ah in the first place. I wouldn't be surprised if you got only 2-3Ah out of this 9Ah battery in a UPS use case.

    What…a battery deal…
Please keep focusing memory and storage…

  • My alarm panel uses this style of battery and I seem to get a bit over 3yrs out of them before low battery warning occurs regardless of brand. Yuasa are probably a top tier battery brand, but being the same chemistry, I doubt they would last significantly longer than the cheaper ones others have mentioned. I just installed a LiFePo4 battery in the hope that it will last much longer, time will tell.

  • For those with an ABN, check out https://www.yhipower.com.au/.
Big warehouse in BNE, heaps of stock, 20-30% cheaper than retail.
