In b4 someone says Optus reception is crap.

Optus is actually better than Telstra for me so I guess it depends on your location.

    • +11

Optus is crap…and not just the reception!

      • +1

Optus is crap in terms of the company, but the network when used with a decent reseller is pretty good. You also don't get your details stolen in the process.

      • You use Optus for other things everyday besides communication?

        • +2

I used Optus to make an omelette once, turned out fine, can't vouch for their service, support or anything else though

    • +2

I live in Melbourne West but work in the North. Optus reception is always 1/2 or 2/3 of Telstra.
However that might be because of I have the Telstra sim as my primary service and Optus as the second service but on an e-sim.

      • +1

I've never understood why Optus is so bad in Melbourne. Regional areas sure, but it seems uniquely crap here. I've worked in a few offices where Optus you had to walk to a window to take a call, Telstra worked fine through the building. Also a lot of dead spots around.

My folks live in the country though so I have to go with Telstra. Otherwise I'd have nothing to do while sitting on the bog when I'm there.

        • Everytime I'm inside a building or a covered carpark ( not necessarily an underground one), there is next to none reception for my Optus service. Meanwhile I get a full bar with Telstra when travelling in the city loop.

      • It is really depends on where you live. When first coming to Aussie (Melbourne), I thought Telstra was better but: at some place Optus coverage is better, some place Telstra's is, some place like where I am living they're both crap.

    • With most phones supporting vowifi this shouldn’t be issue who WFH

    • I travel around between offices and cities for work and work mobile has been Telstra (used to have reseller Optus personal Sim) on average Optus is pretty ordinary with reception and Telstra had coverage in more places … Only one worse was Voda when I had that for my work mobile and changed my personal to Telstra (boost)… If you stick to the usual areas then sure get whichever has better coverage in your areas but I'm in the Optus coverage is crap camp…. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Take note that Coles Mobile doesn’t offer call conferencing - ie. you can connect 2 or more calls together for a conference call.

    • Can't?

      • does?

        • Sorry - should have said “you can’t connect 2 or more calls together for a conference call”

  • -8

Does this deal include a free complimentary data leak

    • +1

MVNOs weren't impacted fortunately. Avoid main brand Optus.

      • Huh ex Virgin mobile customers affected though and they went defunct in 2018.

        • +2

Virgin is owned by Optus and migrated to Optus' database. Amaysim is also owned by Optus but uses a different system. For the most part my comment is true as every non-Optus reseller wasn't impacted including Coles Mobile.

I'd get coles sim card if they offer 10% off shopping once a month like woolworths. Happy with woolies even more expensive.

    • +1

Yeah if you're feeding a family the woolies sim is basically free.

  • +2

I am on Coles mobile. Figured how bad can it be. I would say 30% of the time travelling around Southern/Western Sydney I have poor to little reception. Next recharge going back to Boost.

  • What would be the cheapest 365 day plan if I need at least 60GB per year and only local calls?

    • Following - after same

    • You'd need to wait for a sale like this one, I think, most yearly plan go on sale around Black Friday?
Amaysim, I think historically has been the lowest especially during BF sale, and that's coupled with TA's cashrewards offer during the time.
Last BF, their 365 plans are half price, so $60 for 60GB and then I received another $10.50 back from Cashrewards.

      Otherwise, you can check here.
      https://www.whistleout.com.au/MobilePhones/SIM-Only-Mobile-P…

    • You missed this which was net $74 for 12mo of 60GB.

I'd say either wait for it to come back to $99 or wait for Amaysim to do the same plan for $99 with a CR cashback (usually at least $14), using month-to-month until then like the Aldi $15 for 3GB/mo.

How's this a deal when it's the same deal as last week?

  • Can you receive sms while overseas?

    • I did while in Japan last month

  • +1

    FYI

I'm at Day 3 of waiting for technical support to correct an error in my transfer, they having already disabled my old SIM and not yet activated theirs. Being rendered without service from both my old and new provider, despite processing the transfer days before my old plan ran out and during the morning of their advertised opening hours, feels pretty shit..

    • Happened once with aldi, so always be careful when inputting DOB and full name

    • Yup, worst support I've encountered. I am sure it's because they have no backend access to Optus tools, and they relay everything via support tickets to Optus

  • +3

I wouldn't consider Coles Mobile until they introduce a 10% off shop each month like woolies. Woolworths mobile, while a bit more expensive, ends up saving me money with the 10% off shops

    • +2

      Agree!

    • +1

WW mobile also uses Telstra network which is built different 💪

      • It doesn’t use the full Telstra network though, unlike MVNOs who use the Optus network.

  • +1

I'd avoid Coles. Recently lost my Sim, you can't replace it with a $2 Sim, so you wait 2 business days for a replacement. They can't divert your calls either. So if that happens on a Friday, good luck!

    • Solution: don't lose SIM

      • Mmmm, great insight @Tnetennba

i am currently with coles mobile, 60gb annual quota, due to expire on the 25th of Feb.

when will i receive the discounted rate? can anyone share their experience?

or else i need to port out and port back in with the 120GB

    Cheers

    • Any offer yet? Have you got auto recharge on or off?

      • +1

my auto recharge was off, so does my wife.

my wife got the sms and email advising the discounted price a month before.

i got an email and SMS advising mine was due to expire in 2 days, without any offers.

        sux

i ported out and ported in - waste of time :D

having said that, i upgraded myself from the 60G to 120G so thanks to you for showing us this offer mate!

  • Bought this 2 weeks ago for dad: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/753935

Should have waited, now force to activated earlier than current 365 expires.

Hope they bring back $95/60GB plan, would suit mum, she used 5GB of 140GB with 1 month to go.

    • You don't need to use it within 30 days, it doesn't expire after that. They generally say that in case there is some promo when you bought it like double data or something. The actual expiry will be on the pack

      • Thanks for that, will have to look into that. There is no dates mentioned on the pack or receipt.

  • -2

Boost (though more expensive) is better + Free international roaming & better connection

  • Is this the cheapest 365 days data plan? Need one for 4gb backup for modem

    • Why not get free Boost sims? This one you actually make $3 profit.

      • because its not 365 days?

        • But they are posted all the time so you buy another a week or so before your current one expires, winning.

          • @WatchNerd: Yeh but the thing is its for my parents and switching sims every 30days is impossible

            • @Homr: Oh yeah that would be a hassle. Well depending on how much data they need you could hold out for a deal on the cheaper 60GB plan which is usually $99 when on special.

              • @WatchNerd: thanks

looks like thats the cheapest one out there

Do you know if they work on Telstra Smart Modem gen 2?

                • @Homr: If it's unlocked it should work. There's not much difference if you work it out per month so I'd probably buy this for peace of mind (120GB instead of 60GB).

                  • @WatchNerd: I think it only work for Telstra resellers. Does coles use Telstra or Optus?

I know I can unlock/root the modem manually but prefer not to

  • +1

From the T&Cs, just want to confirm if I buy it now I will have to activate latest by 21/2/23? and not by 30 days after 21/2/23?

    Terms And Conditions
Discount offer - $150 SIM: Offer ends 21/02/23, unless withdrawn earlier. Discounted price of $119 applies to SIM purchase and first 365 days only. Ongoing recharges revert to standard price of $150 for 120GB or as otherwise advertised. New services only. Data allowance of 120GB is applied upfront after $119 payment and SIM activation. Activate within 30 days of purchase or by the date advertised in a promotion, whichever is earlier, to receive advertised inclusions.

    • +1

What it means is the special ends on 21/Feb, after that it will be back to $150.

Also, you can activate after 30 days. I have confirmed through live chat.

I wanted to activate by end of March, which is about 50 days (I bought earlier), they said no problem.

You can ask them again and let us know what they say, just to confirm.

    • +1

You can update the expiry date to 28/Feb.

This is actually quite a good deal. Effectively 10GB $10/month with international calls and text (selected countries).

  • Anyone know if I can receive 2FA text/SMS/RCS's from France with one of these? Going for a year and don't want to change all my 2FA's to a foreign number.

    • +1

Unlikely, you will need international roaming in order to have text sent to an Australian number routed internationally.

Some providers offer international roaming packs, I don't know of any provider would include it for free.

Is authenticator app an option? Or SMS only?

      • +1

I can confirm that you should be able to receive SMS without needing the international roaming pack. I recently travelled to Malaysia, Singapore & India with no issues receiving SMS which is perfect for getting the 2FA text or SMS from your bank when making a transaction. International pack is only required when you need to reply to SMS or make / receive calls which you can purchase on the spot when you need to use it.

  • Link is showing $150? Expired?

    • +1

That's strange because it's in the current catalogue as I mentioned above, so must be in store only.

      • Ok phew, I intented to buy it in store anyway!

        • Just bought 1 in-store at $119

      • Holding out for a 60GB plan, if nothing next Monday/Tuesday, will grab this.
