quite an interesting combination, 6.6kW worth of solar panels, but only a 5kW inverter - wonder what the rationale behind that is…

    • +2

probably cause majority of the time you'll never get 100% efficiency

      • -2

        Really? Geez…
Doing the maths on it, 5kW/(16x415W)=75.3%… sounds underwhelming.
Can't imagine new panels having such low efficiency.
When I had my first solar installation configuration (had extra stuff installed later on) I had 4.6kW worth of panels on a 5 and a bit kW controller, and the highest I've seen the controller report on very sunny days (and that's after a few years of them being on the roof) was like 5.3kW.
I guess the question then becomes: how much 'over-capacity' does the inverter/controller pass through for consumption.

Then again, for that price, probably not the most important question (I paid close to 9K back in 2015)

        • +2

There is also the case of people being unable to have north-facing panels.

    • +9

That's literally the most common combination of panel and inverter size sold.

    • How’d it go in winter, chief?

    Hey JustAnExPat,

Installing solar panel capacity greater than inverter capacity is called “oversizing”. There are a couple of reasons we do this, first one is to maximise the STC (federal government rebate). This rebate is based on the total capacity of the panels (e.g. 6.6kW). In Australia we are allowed to oversize an inverter by a factor of 33% (5kw goes to 6.6kW of Panels).

Firstly this means that the end user gets the maximum rebate. Secondly, its not always ideal conditions (sunny) so having the extra panel capacity allows the inverter to reach its maximum generation quicker and more often. The panels are not 100% efficient (solar tech is just not there yet) that they wont actually make the full capacity at all times. By having the system oversized there is more production for longer period of times.

Another very important reason for using a 5kW inverter is that it is the maximum capacity/export to the grid many Network Service Providers allow to be connected to the grid for a Single Phase Property.

The overall system is designed by our in house CEC Accredited designers to ensure the end user is getting the most efficient solution for their property.

    • aha, thanks for the explanation.
Thought that they'd ditched that max export threshold by now… guess I thought wrong then.

      • As more and more houses get solar, the max export threshold becomes more and more important to preserve the stability of the grid. There are areas now that the distributors aren't even letting any more solar panels be installed!

  • any special deals on 10kw systems? looking for one in my new place.

    • Hey Mikedrop89,

We can definitely help, reach out to us with the property details and we will be happy to provide a property specific quote.

Larger systems are a bit more complicated, and we would like to look at the roof space, splits and installation requirements for an accurate quote.

If you could please share your property address and email (via PM, call or email) I will design a property specific quote for you shortly.

  • Should also consider an inverter capable of islanding and a battery so when the lefts net zero madness finally crashes the whole electricity grid , your power stays on.

  • This is a fantastic deal and with a highly rated inverter. Is this only available in Victoria?

    • Hi Staz,

Yes this deal is for Vic only. We also install in metro Sydney, please free to get in touch for a quote.

  • Hi, Anyone used shinehub for Solar and battery.Any feedback ?

  • What's the payback time on something like this?

    • Hi CheapBrah,

Depending on a few factors such as, roof orientation, bill size, current usage patterns etc.

Overall we estimate around 2-4 years pay back in full, please not this can vary depending on how a customer uses their solar generation. The idea would be to use as much generated solar power in the house as possible instead of feeding back large amounts to the grid. This will result in the largest financial benefit and quicker payback.

We design systems and work with each individual customers based on their usage data, usage patterns and habits. We also educate our customers into how best to utilise their solar power for the best outcome.

Feel free to get in touch for a quote and we can have a detailed look at your usage profile and provide a site specific quote and payback assessment.

      Regards,

      Matt
