How can you go wrong for $15?

That's what I thought with the Aldi's versions— which chipped/cracked badly after the warranty.

There's a reason some can demand the price they do- they last for decades.

If, however, you have NO heavy pots, then it's worth trying.

      • +17

        LOL!
but also this is why we are all going to die from climate change. maybe

        • +10

I’ve been working in climate and energy for 10 years. Individual’s laziness and ignorance coupled with corporate and political greed are going to be our downfall (climate-wise)

          • +2

@Ghogger: Climate Hoax more like it! It rained at my house yesterday. How to you explain that!?

            • +7

              @B Wat:

              How to you explain that!?

              Melbourne.

            • +5

@B Wat: Geo-engineering. They have been manipulating nature and weather conditions for at least a decade.

            • +3

@B Wat: Sounds like cloud seeding to me!

          • @Ghogger: so not these pale blue heavy pots?

        • +5

No. The science was settled in the 70s. The world is freezing. Don’t dispute the science.

          • +3

@voteoften: It's the only thing keeping the earth from entering another ice age. Nothing ruins a summer beach bbq faster the 365 ski season and frozen hops bushes.

      • +1

I disagree. About 10 years ago I spent a small fortune on a set of allegedly non-stick Le Creuset pans. What a waste of money! A year or so later the frying pans were all ruined. Unbelievably, the "lifetime warranty" doesn't cover damage from heat, so if you we want to sear a steak, forget it. So we're left with several thousand dollars of skanky horrible pans that are kept at the back of the cupboard.

My point is that nowadays we buy cheap pans and when they knacker (pans always knacker) we throw them in the recycling and but more. The enameled one we have from Aldi, similar to this one, has been just fine and cost $30 vs $400 for a Le Creuset…

        • +19

You were trying to sear steak in a non-stick pan - there's your problem.

Non-stick is not for high heat cooking, and the packaging on the cookware would have explained this.

          • @prhino: These are Le Creuset non stick - i.e. not teflon coated but cured in a hardened enamel. The packaging doesn't explain this; there are lots and lots of unhappy customers of these products who got duped in to buying something that isn't fit for purpose.

            • @AN Other: Lots of unhappy customers who don't follow directions. It's pretty common knowledge that non-stick surfaces shouldn't be used for high heat.

          • @prhino: Product info. Where on here does it not say you cannot use it at high temp?

            https://www.lecreuset.com.au/en_AU/p/toughened-non-stick-sha…

            • +2

@AN Other: "The pan should NEVER be used on a maximum or high heat setting either for pre-heating or cooking as the excessive surface temperatures will damage the non-stick cooking surface."

              It's under care and use.

              • -3

@prhino: Sounds like junk if it can't be used on "high" heat.

What is high heat anyway? 350? 250? 200? 150? 100? Whatever temp they make up to avoid warranty?

                • +1

@Charity: There is no non-stick coating that can be used with high heat.
If you want to sear s steak use stainless steel or cast iron.

        • +1

Jesus dont throw your junk in the recycling bin.

        • -2

          Do cheap pans have lead?

        • Own Le Creuset and Staub enamelled cast iron cookware (dutch oven and shallow casserole). These are excellent and work a treat for their intended purpose like slow cooked casseroles, "dum biriyanis", barbacoa etc.

For high heat cooking from stir fries and rev searing steaks, we use our cast iron or carbon steel skillets.

For everything else, all-clad D5 stainless steel pans and skillets are our workhorse.

Use the right tool for the job and follow the care instructions and you'll find these last forever (I'm not being hyperbolic).

      We've got a 40+yo frenchie amd a $18yo Kmart

Kmart is no different in quality.

      • Sorry im not sure I understand. Are you saying you have a 40 year old $300 le Cruset cast iron crock pot, and a 1 year old $18 Anko Kmart cast iron crock pot, and they are the same quality?

        • +3

18yo kmart job (or maybe Target) they cook the same. The quality appear the same (i.e. they're still alive & used for cooking). No idea why someone would pay the extra for the French stuff. Then again they do sell Evian, so it's for those who like paying the advertising tax.

          • @M00Cow: Thanks very much. 18 years is excellent. I love cast iron. Hopefully you can pass them on oneday.

          • @M00Cow: KMart and Target were much better quality 18 years ago than they are today.

    • +1

Yeah i love my le creuset

      • -1

        Noone cares

        • -1

          ok nobjocky

    • I bought one at Kmart over 10 years ago. Still going strong. No chips or cracks. The white enamel on the bottom is a little discoloured, as you'd expect because I often use it on the stove top, but that doesn't affect the cooking.

    • Yes, buy another one for $15 instead of pre-buying a le creuset for your grandchildren

  • +1

Bought a cast iron Kmart one years ago, lid handle melted in oven on first use. This one may be different though.

    • Pft cast iron cant melt, what was it actually made of!?

      • +3

The handles are usually made of plastic. The handles on the Le Creuset casseroles that I have are also made of plastic but they can be used in an oven without melting.

        • What? No they're all metal

          • +1

@M00Cow: Maybe now they are but they definitely made products with plastic handles.

I'm sure I could replace them with metal though if I wanted to.

            • +1

@R4: Never seen a Frenchie with anything but all cast iron same with the kmart/aldi

    • +1

Yes they had plastic, acrylic handle on lid. Maybe they've improved, but I would get a get a full cast iron one from camping store if buying a cheap one again.

      • Me too! I aint forking out for cast iron unless it is 100% cast iron, or has a removable replacable wooden handle. None of this plastic bs! I saw kmart has an enameled cast iron stock pot with a glass lid and plastic handle facepalm

        • It is cast iron & enamel coated

Material: Cast iron with enamel coating

No plastic, wood, glass, etc. They're always sold these as all cast iron.

      • You mean like this one

Material: Cast iron with enamel coating

  • +2

these are extremely heavy and awkward to use, hard to wash, and annoying cookware

    • +1

This can be said with the many Kmart pots and pans we've bought out of desperation.

  • -1

We have two Le Creuset casseroles that are 22 years old. They are both used constantly and are still in very good condition.

    They were not cheap.

Sure, you can buy a $15 casserole made by slaves for the CCP but I wouldn't.

    • +3

What isn't made by slaves of the CCP?🥺

      • +8

        Le Creuset casseroles.

        • +2

True but how much else we buy isn't from China?

          • +5

@corky: Sure, but I now actively try not to. Not always possible but still worth the effort. You'd be surprised about how much stuff you can buy is not made by CCP slaves. There's usually an alternative, but not always unfortunately.

            • @R4: Stuff so cheap from China is the problem , who doesn't like to save a few dollars. Or have you found competitive prices?

              • @corky: No, I'm prepared to pay more to buy non-CCP made products. Saying that, you sometimes see non-CCP stuff at competitive prices.

            • +1

@R4: I am really interested in more ethical shopping also. I find it extremely hard going. Could you please consider starting a thread and imparting your wisdom on where to find things that arent ccp made?

        • +1

Everything Le Creuset other than their cast iron is made in China

          • +1

            @dtc: Cool.

I wouldn't buy Le Creuset that was made by the CCP.

    • +2

      Let's not get political

Communism has killed more people than climate change.

          Your turn.

          • @WasBargain: Do you Include nazis in that Lmao

            • @Jared17: Heck, throw it in there.. 😅

              Still doesn't come close.. 😂

            • @Jared17: No. Communism killed infinitely more people than Nazism.

              • @R4: Communism has had the advantage of time admittedly.

          • @WasBargain: Absolutely. Communism is truly evil.

          • +1

@WasBargain: @WasBargain communisim has killed more people than climate change, so far.

            • -2

              @Pwoar: Let’s not forget Colonialism.

              • @Starlord: Happy invasion day

              • -1

@Starlord: Colonialism (especially British colonialism) rocked.

If you live in Australia, you're a direct beneficiary of it.

@WasBargain: Mum said 45% of fatalities of American bombings are children.

            • @Ashy Larry: War is a terrible, terrible thing.

Fact: many innocents die in war. A horrible situation but there it is.

        • two words - balloons! balloons!

    • -4

Lmao where do you get news from on china, Falun gong aand US state media? Bet you dun even know CPC elimated absolute poverty in China

      • +4

        🤣🤣🤣

But LaoWhy86 and SerpentZA showed me a video of a village kid eating a rat.

What do I know, the way they eradicated sparrows in that godforsaken country, it might be an expensive delicacy.. 😅

      • +9

        That's nice.

They also eliminated Uigars and Tibetans.

I was talking to a Falun Gong guy in Fremantle a few weeks ago. Nice bloke who had some interesting things to say about the CCP.

      • +4

Decades behind South Korea and Japan. Communism set them back decades.

      • -1

Hi Jared, why did you waste your time on this bunch of brain-washed / brain-dead, SB?

    • Ironic that you're typing this on your Chinese made phone, eh?

      • +2

Above I wrote 'There's usually an alternative, but not always unfortunately'.

        Ta da.

    • Or you can pay $200 for the le creuset marketing team. Happy to pay the CCP less.

      • -1

I prefer to pay the Le Creuset marketing team.

They don't hate me and are not evil.

The CCP hate you and me and they are evil.

        Works for me.

        • Actually the CCP don't even know your exist. Stop projecting your unwarranted self importance and politics on a bargain board.

  • +4

Cooked dinner in this last night.

Absolutely no issues. Got it super high heat on the stove and then 3 hours in the oven.

    Cleaned easy too.

  • +4

I've been using mine for the last year+ with no issues and works just as good as families fancy schmancy french ones. These comments are sounding like a bit of user error maybe.

  • +2

Better than any pot I’ve bought before including from my dealer. #cooked

  • Thanks, but i got a new pot for Christmas.

  • -5

Do yourself a favour and buy something proper. They're pricey for a reason.

    • +1

I've got some decent stuff already. Figured I'd check this out given it's so cheap.

Reviews seem decent and commenters here who have it seem to agree

Edit: I didn't neg you btw

  • +3

4.6kg! These things will punch a hole in my kitchen cupboard. Pass.

  • +3

We've had 2 of these. The first one got stained inside really badly and the enamel was getting scratched.

Second one has been great. Cleans easily, i use it for stuff like Bolognaise and butter chicken, i also deep fry in mine. We spent$20 and very happy. I'm half tempted to buy another one at this price and leave it in a cupboard.

  • +1

Anyone have a photo of the actual colour you get? The last photo shows it as an aqua

  • +5

Ah yes, I see our six-monthly "here's how I justify paying $300 for a casserole dish" debate is going well

    • haha so true, I guess it's hard for people to justify the gouging Le Creuset does when you have a product like this that actually seems to be decent quality for the rock-bottom price

    • +1

They are $600-750 rrp these days for a 4.2L, maybe $200 off on sale. I'd be frothing at the mouth and spouting racist slurs if I got ripped off like that, too.

  • Was so tempted until the misses came along and said " WE GOT TOO MANY PANs" there is no place to put it.

  • +2

    Hilarious comments in here.

I've had this exact pot for almost three years now. Absolutely no issues with it what so ever. Looks great. Use it almost every week for a batch cook of Chili Con Carne. Used it for Christmas Pork. Use it to heat up left overs. Very easy to wash.

Best thing I've ever bought from K-Mart by a country mile.
