WHISTLE50

We've just received an exclusive $50 Bonus gift card deal for Vodafone which is valid ON TOP OF Vodafone online deals until 27/07 for the Galaxy S3, Galaxy S2, Galaxy Note and Galaxy Nexus on the $39 Plan and above.

You can claim Vodafone's current online only deals such as 2 Months Free and get the $50 Gift Card with the coupon code WHISTLE50.

We've analysed the deals in detail on against the price of buying phones outright and Live Connected SIM which is a favourite of OzBargainers. The deals are pretty competitive with the Gift Card combined (disclosure, we're a comparison site that works with and compares deals from all major telcos).

GALAXY S3 16GB

Let's start with the $39 Plan with Vodafone with Double Data (right now you can double the data allowance for the first 12 months on a Galaxy S3 plan). The $39 plan provides $300 of included value for calls and texts and 1GB of data for 12 months with the double data deal (normally 500MB of data) AND infinite text messages.

The phone repayments are $15 per month meaning monthly payments of $54.
The results in a min Cost is $1,296. With $50 EFTPOS cash card this makes effective min cost of $1,246.

Comparison to Outright Purchase of Galaxy S3 and SIM Plan

Kogan has the Galaxy S3 at $559. The Live Connected Medium plan is a comparable SIM only plan to the $39 Plan from Vodafone but this costs $12 per month. Over 24 months this would add up to $288 (with another $20 upfront for the SIM Starter Pack) and to match apples with apples, we'd need 24 months warranty which is $79 at Kogan and $19 delivery.

Outright purchasing all components brings you in at $965 with the extended warranty and delivery costs v.s. the Vodafone deal which is an effective total cost of $1,246, BUT the Vodafone does include both unlimited text messages for the whole contract and unlimited calls to Vodafone and Three customers (which means unlimited calls to approximately 25% of the mobile market in Australia) and an automatic 24 Month Warranty for the extra $281 in total cost.

GALAXY S2 16GB

The sweet spot here is actually on the $49 Plan with Vodafone (Vodafone's current special online offer is that you get a $10 per month reduction which actually brings the plan in at a cost of $39 per month for 24 months with $0 cost for the phone. Choosing this plan over the actual $39 plan is far better deal as you get more calls and data for the exact same price). This provides $550 calls and 1GB of data.

How Does it Compare?

With the special offer of $10 off per month on the GS2, the $49 Plan is effectively $39 per month and has a min cost of $936 (24*39)

With bonus eftpos gift card deal of $50 that brings us in at an effective Cost of $886.

Comparison to Outright Purchases of Galaxy S2 and SIM plan

Kogan has the Galaxy S2 at $409. The Live Connected Medium is a comparable SIM only plan at $12 per month and would add up to $288 over 24 months and to match apples with apples, we'd need 24 months warranty which is $79 at Kogan and $19 delivery.

Outright purchasing all components brings you in at $795 with the extended warranty and delivery v.s. the Vodafone deal at $886, but the positives on the Vodafone plan are that you get also get free unlimited calls to Vodafone / Three customers (which is 25% of the market you can call with no charge and talk for unlimited minutes) and you get to pay monthly without and there is an automatic 24 Month Warranty.

Summary: For an extra $91 over 24 months in total cost comparisons with the Vodafone deal you're getting unlimited calls to about 25% of the mobile market compared to outright purchase options (net price of $3.97 per month for unlimited calls to 25% of mobile market).

GALAXY NOTE

The sweet spot here is actually on the $49 Plan with Vodafone where there is a phone price reduction online only brining the cost in at $1,198 with 2 Months Free Access. This provides $550 calls and 1GB of data for $54 per month and unlimited calls to Vodafone and Three customers.

Comparison to Outright

Kogan has the Galaxy Note at $529. The Live Connected Medium is a comparable SIM only plan at $12 per month and would add up to $288 over 24 months and to match apples with apples, we'd need 24 months warranty which is $79 at Kogan and $19 delivery which is $915

Outright purchasing all components brings you in at $915 with the extended warranty and delivery v.s. the Vodafone deal with $50 gift card at effective total cost at $1148, but the positives on the Vodafone plan are that you get also get free unlimited calls to Vodafone / Three customers (which is 25% of the market you can call with no charge and talk for unlimited minutes) and you get to pay monthly without and there is an automatic 24 Month Warranty and free leather case worth $39.95

Not for me, but +1 for the exhaustive comparison.

  • Nah not worth it if you can get it for -$600 for an galaxy s3 16gb outright. I know its grey imports but your almost paying double in these plans. Warranty is a must but haven't needed it for a product over 1 year as I get tired from it and move on to eBay to sell it. Just my opinion.

Problem with the first comparison is that you've only got 1 gig of data with vodaphone for the first 12 months of a 24 months contract, where the Live Connected Medium will give you 1.5gig for the whole 24 months. (and the option to leave if something better comes along.

  • Rather have ~$100 cashback from Buckscoop if I was going with Vodafone

(I realize they don't have a 100% tracking rate - I recommend you think of it as a 'bonus' rather than letting it influence your decision)

    • I used start here and it's listed as approved so should get the $100 back soon. Also got a $25 discount so all up ~$700 for phone and small amount of calls and data on 12 month plan.

  • Great description.

Havent met a happy voda user in WA yet though. Not sure about liveconnected over here either, or if LC is even available.

    • you got Optus, you got LC.

  • Good effort, but no deal
