Also recommended to get a heatsink for the SSD.

Also recommended to get a heatsink for the SSD.

And we both know where. Here of course! Use zip ties for better longevity ;)

    • Thanks for this info mate. Could you also recommend a heatsink from amazon?

    • Failures mostly seem to be around the 990 and for the 980 the latest firmware is recommended. Doesn't seem too bad.

There're quite a few reports of a high failure rate of the 980 pro (e.g. this one: https://www.pugetsystems.com/blog/2023/02/02/update-on-samsu…). Samsung released a very recent firmware update for the 980 pro, but I haven't seen any confirmation that the new firmware fixes the failure rate in the long term.

      • Also doesn't retroactively fix any that are already broken.

      • The newest firmware is over a year old

I have 2x 980 Pro 2TBs, and have not updated my firmware for a looooooooong time. Even so, the firmware it is on is listed as the latest version without the issue with the pugetsystems link that you provided above. So I don't think this is an issue given how slack I am with updating firmware and I am still on the newest version and the previous version doesn't seem to have the issue either. So you would be looking at drives older than 1-2 years that have not been updated.

  • 1TB 980 Pro is listed at $199
had an ebay plus $25 off $150+ spend to bring it down to $174.
Paid with gift cards from shopback to bring it down 3% to $169
$40 samsung redemption brings it to $129.

    • Very tempting indeed.
However reading the reddit indicated they are few people having issue with 980 pro turning into read only mode.

It's supposed to have warranty and I'm using for ps5 so if it stuffs up I can just re-download the games. If it was for pc use I'd be a bit more concerned.
