Silverback Scento Metro HD Flat Bar Bike - $459.00 + Delivery ($0 C&C) @ 99bikes

140

Seems like pretty good value with alloy frame, hydraulic discs and Altus groupset. Says 50% off 'full price' but google suggests it was probably selling for more like ~$700ish.

Appears to be only sizes XS, SM and MD available. I tried some random postcodes in CBR, Syd and Mel and couldn't get any to work with delivery, so not sure how much that might be, but should be able to do free click and collect if your local has stock.

It says you get club pricing when shopping online so I don't think you need to be a member, but even for $5 it does seem to offer some decent benefits.

It didn't get much love last time out for $579, but in fairness was up against a ripper deal on a better Merida Speeder 100 for only ~$80 more than that price.

FWIW I am not a bike nerd at all, just a kind-of interested shopper, so feel free to tear the deal apart if and where required.

(Yes JV, I know it has no pedals, but at this price you should be able to at least afford some.)

Hydraulic discs are a good start, and it's easy enough to up grade the group set if the bug bites …. the speeder 100, was going to buy one although I have enough bikes, luckily missed out …….
upgrade wise on the group set …… works out cheaper to get this to as an upgrade than my canondale was with 105 from factory …. it's as a good entry level bike if you want to get from A to B and ablilty to upgrade rather than throw away to get to the next level … always thought I'd upgrade the brakes on my canondale quick disc 1 …. never did …. the leap seems to be on brakes from cable calipers to hydraulic discs , once on hydralic discs it's incremental …. do prefer 2x10 rather than 3x8 for crank and gear changes.

finally starting to see plenty of sales on bikes & related equipment now,

stack with ultimate him gc for use at 99bikes

  • Great price for the hardware. Shame the frame size is a bit small for me otherwise I'd have seriously looked into buying one. Anything around 10-12kg is going to be an easy riding bike. Who ever gets one will be happy with it and save at least 300.

Decent deal. Only complaints are the 3x drivetrain and aluminium fork, but then the bike is so cheap that the upgrades would be 50% of the bike's cost.

    • I don't understand the hate against 3x drivetrains for casual/city bikes.

it gives those that don't have good fitness a decent chance of pedaling at a cadence they prefer.

not everyone spins at crazy high speeds so having the large range despite them being "overlaps" on paper, is a good starting point for beginners

      • +1

Not really hate, but definitely a dislike for 3x drive trains, especially when they only put 7 or 8 gears at the back. Main reasons being:
        - 3x8 isn't actually 24 gears. With the overlap it's pretty much got the same number of usable gears as 2x9.
        - I can get to the gear I want to with less clicks with a 2x9 vs 3x8. Not to mention a larger range within the same front gear, which I would argue is better/easier for beginners.
        - If you're using the full range, 3x8 is going to have more chain wear than 2x9.

If it's for casual/city bike, I'd even argue for a 1x11 system over any front derailleur. Less maintenance and simpler shifting.

Is it really a better choice than say, a $500ish decathlon bike? I would like to buy a “decent” bike for casual peddling around my place. (Can’t do 23km one way to my office). Will this bike be one of them? I am only sure that I don’t need super wide or skinny tyre. Other requirements are light and low maintenance?

Is it a better choice than a $500 decathlon bike? Yes. The options around $500 are either the Triban 100 (decent 700 x 32 tyres, dodgy shifters, 1x7 drivetrain, rim brakes, decent 32) for $459, or the Riverside 500 (normal shifters, 1x9 drivetrain, disc brakes, heavy fork) for $699.

Would I do 23km one way with it? Probably, if it's flat. If it's got any hills and I need to shift on the front derailleur I'll probably shoot myself.

Light is relative. At 12kg it's not exactly light, but it's about the same as any non-carbon options out there.

Bikes are generally pretty low maintenance, but as with most bike things it depends on how much you want to maintain it. Disc brakes are marginally more maintenance than rim brakes (may need a bleed once in a while, brake pads may need cleaning/replacement when it squeaks). If you want to minimise maintenance, get a belt drive + internal hub bike :)

Any recommendations on a ~$500 mountain bike from 99bike? Some are on sale:

I wouldn't recommend getting an mtb for $500. If it's for on-road, get the bike in the OP or a similar style. Mtbs are slow and cumbersome on the road - their geometry just isn't made for it.

For off-road where a mtb is actually needed, the minimum cost is around $1k. Things like proper rebound damping in the fork is essential (and ideally air sprung, single chain ring etc.). A cheaper bike isn't necessarily going to be dangerous (though it might be), just won't be much fun to ride.

Thanks and totally fair. Use case should have mentioned here is to ride with young kids and teenagers off road, gravel, bumps and mud. No hardcore downhill. Some fun, not too expensive.

*I got a decent road bike for myself on asphalt.

        • Realistically for gravel and fire trail type riding, the OP bike with better tread rubber would do you fine. Being disc braked, you could even swap out the wheels for a set of 27.5" MTB wheels (assuming that you could find anything cheap in the QR axle size) to give you additional width and the ability to run lower pressures.

  • Odd to call something with those huge tyres and gear range a "road bike".
Aren't we calling these "gravel bikes" now? :-)

Just one question: what is that strange thing sticking out the back like an exhaust pipe? I don't think I've seen one before.

    • +2

      I believe it's a kickstand.

      • ? Like on a motorcycle? How odd.

        • How is it odd? I've always ensured mine had one so I can stand it up anywhere

          • @TheFIREnanceGuy: I was just being a road-bike snob. Most lycra road-bike riders would as likely have a front wicker basket as a kick-stand :-) Very not cool.

  • What size bike would suit someone who is around 175cm tall?

    • +1

The sizing guide on the page for the deal suggests Medium to Large, but I think the usual suggestion is to try in-store as different brands vary.

  • Is Silverback supposed to be a homage to Diamondback?
