Hi All

Was trying to buy a macbook pro on ebay at 5% off and it failed due to commbank maintenance.

Thought i will check for other deals meanwhile and saw that costco is selling M2 Max Macbook Pro 16 inch 1TB SSD 32 GB RAM for 5299.99$

Saw that its lower than Officeworks price of 5597$

Went for a price beat and got it for 5035$

I am not sure about other models, but the previous gen was on sale for 4249$

Max purchase limit: 5

    • +17

You saved $5035, what a great deal!

      • +1

        I was planning to buy 2 & saved $10,070
Now I can treat myself with Galaxy S23 Ultra with similar specs ;)

        • +3

Similar specs? It’s like comparing a bicycle to a rocket ship.

  • +40

hmmm, this makes that dyson stick vac seem cheap now doesn't it.

    Maximum purchase of 5.

    Damn, that's a shame.

Costco. You won this time. We shall get you yet.

      damn, I needed 6 :(

  • +7

Wow over $5k for a laptop, thats insane, I wonder what kind of buyers will that be? I certainly cant afford one for sure lol !

    • +21

You'd likely be using the laptop to generate income.

Laptops in this price range also aren't exclusive to Apple - eg: MSI Creator Pro Z16P

      • +6

Yeah, I would say someone who does well with vidor editing, any form of editing or music would probably outlay and reap tax deductions through a business etc

        • +7

          iOS devs

          • @GetFitWithCameron: Xcode benchmark is insane.

          • @GetFitWithCameron: No reason to get a Max over a Pro for iOS development. The increased memory bandwidth doesn’t contribute to any increase in compilation time. The Max is targeted at video/photo editors. The Max has actually been found to have a shorter battery life at load, too.

@OnlineShopper123: You need a GPU for that?

            • @congo: IIRC, you'll get about 10Mh/S. Not great compared to a dedicated GPU

        • username checks out

      • +4

Yes, try and get a dell precision or a Thinkpad P with this level of power, Ram and storage and see how much it costs.

In fact I am not sure you can. At least an i9. And if each machine were off the Power cable, the diff would be embarrassing.
If you are into engineering CAD though, you would get the Dell or the thinkpad. The state of MacOS CAD software sucks.

        • +1

I got solidworks to run with GPU support through Windows arm in parallels. Runs actually really fast with my M1 Max 32 core GPU. I also have a $8k zbook with a quadro 5000 but that is hot mess with fans blaring even while idling and runs slow on battery (and lasts for maybe 2 hours max just doing basic work)

          • @qvinto: Yes I could do that. But can I rely on it? Siemens NX version 12 also works, sorta, but that hasn’t been updated since 2017.

            • @entropysbane: I wouldn’t use it if it was my full time job but for opening existing files or some non critical tasks it is very useful.

    • +1

I have had the M1Pro 16” since launch. It’s certainly powerful enough for majority of my workflow, it’s struggles sometimes but even then it’s very fast. The max would be wild but I probably wouldn’t push it enough to ever get one.

      Hey

      I am a software engineer. It's a company purchase.

Gets about 470$ gst refund and saves about 25% of the amount in tax.

And for some people this sort of purchase may bring them to a slab lower, so makes sense to purchase.

In software engineering some people make horrible mess that people like me cleanup and a slow computer is the last thing you want on your side

      • +3

Being a slab lower doesn't sounds good.

        • A person with 255k in income pays 30% tax on super.

          Someone with 249k pays 15%

          • +2

@ukom92: I am aware of that, but that has little to do with slabs.

            • @Aureus: Always depends on how long it takes to drink your way through it.

          • +15

@ukom92: Doesn’t that only apply to amount above $250k? So you’re taxed 15% more on $5k? No biggie.

            • @julesytime: Geez people really just comment and neg things on which they clearly have no idea. Everyone be aware of what people post or comment and do your own research! Look at all the upvotes on this and the OP got negged even though he is correct.

          • @ukom92: Tough gig.

          • +1

@ukom92: You're taxed on the bracket higher only on the amount that is above each threshold.

            • +4

@monkeyboi94: That isn't how it works. If you earn over the threshold you will pay an additional 15% tax on all concessional contributions. Lookup "Division 293".

              • +15

@Aureus: Very interesting. Looking forward to the day this will be a problem for me lol

              • +1

@Aureus: Spot on. Dogs tax ya on everything

          • +3

            @ukom92:

A person with 255k in income pays 30% tax on super.

            Good problem to have

          • @ukom92: You don't pay tax on super?
            Super is pre-tax?

            • @congo: You pay a 15% tax on the way in (except in rare cases), unless you go over a threshold and division 293 applies, and then its 30%.

          • +1

@ukom92: @ukom92 @bbbargain1 @Aureus @wouldyou No the tax is still phased in incrementally. You only pay the additional 15% on the lesser of the amount above the limit (250k) or your concessional contributions.

Purchase, keep receipt, return for refund, claim GST and tax back, make money, rinse and repeat.

Don't take this as an actual advice

        • +1

Im all for getting as much back on your taxes but fraud aint the way.

          • @xoom: I agree. A bad joke. I'll take the comment down.

            Edit- oh no. I can't!

        • +1

ATO has softwares that easily flags this.

I am not a fan of paying taxes, neither am i a fan of tax fraud

          • +1

@ukom92: Yep, there is a reason they have (had?) the best supercomputer in Australia.

      • My doctor and lawyer friends don't need to come up with any complicated process or excuse to buy one of these.

In software engineering, the sad reality is that if the company gets you one of these, you are a worker. Don't get me wrong, I am also a worker / cleaner.

      • -4

Have you heard of cloud/virtual computing? You can configure 100x more powerful machine & only pay for the use time.
This laptop is for marketing show-off.

        • +1

It’s not easy to get a Cloud VM that has 100x more cores and ram than this. If you use the any capacity it’ll quickly cost more than this.

    • +2

I bought one for programming with some machine learning involved, MacOS is easier to manage programming stuff than Microsoft, and nicer to use than 99% of linux distros.

    • Professionals usually go for these. It’s a tool for their work.

If this machine will let them perform their job better or quicker and therefor makes them more money, then it would be an absolute no brainer of an investment.

There's a lot of stuff made in China with varying degrees of quality and QA. It's weird that you feel the need to point out country of origin.

        • +1

maybe valid but honestly a long shot for an ozbargainer. i bet on racism.

          • @theadeptus1: Or someone miffed that China banned our exports because we suggested Covid came from China. It isn’t automatically racist. That robs China of agency.
What exactly did our wine, meat producers and woolgrowers do to China’s leadership?

Anyway, the China origin is irrelevant. Even if a laptop isn’t made there, a large majority of parts would be. So pointless to rail about China anyway.

        • you're the one sounding racist now lol

    • Your house might have items that are expensive and made in China but you didn’t know.

  • -3

Thanks OP, bought 5 to resell.

  • +16

    What a strange world - $5k for a laptop, $2k for mobile.
    What's next - $2M for a house? Aaaaah we are already there…

    • A full house for a divorce, inflation :)

    • +8

$1K for smart watch, $2K for new GPU, $2 for petrol

      • +5

$2k for a new GPU is so 2019, it's $3K for a few years by now.

        • +2

$3K, because NVidia and AMD are greedy b***.
It's a duopoly, not much we can do.

          • +2

@congo: I really hope Intel will be successful with its ARC GPUs line.

          • @congo: AMD aren't nearly as greedy as Nvidia.
Their flagship GPU is less than $2k.
Their prices of GPUs are static on release day.

            • @Deviner: I think the only reason their flagship is around $2k instead of $3k - it's slower than 4090 and more comparable to 4080 from NVidia. Slightly cheaper compared to the similar performance card from NVidia but not by much.

          • +1

@congo: If we do productive stuff no time for games & waste of money on expensive GPUs.

          My portfolio

          • @idonotknowwhy: Yes, thanks to the Reserve Banks raising interest rates….
Didn't they say that the rate would remain unchanged until 2024 ?!?!?

    • It has been like this for 10 years, 5 years for sure. Except for houses. Check phone/laptop prices 5 years ago inflation adjusted. Moreover, phones are getting cheaper, as well as laptops.

    • $2M for a house

      it's happening rn …

      • +1

        What's next - $2M for a house? Aaaaah we are already there…

    • $15k for a 90's camry. Don't laugh. It was a thing at the peak.

    • And those that can afford all this likely still complain about not being bulk billed by their GP/Optometrist/Pathologist/Radiologist xD

  • +3

I thought office works didn’t price match Costco?

  • +8

More expensive than my first car.

more expensive than my current car

  • Makes the s23 pro look cheap… Yeah apples and oranges…

  • Just get it from AOC Apple Store and use 5% discounted GC for greater savings.

    • +3

If you are a professional and/or belong to some unions, you may have access to Member Advantage to get 14% off Ultimate eGift cards, which you can swap for JB GCs to buy Apple gift cards. Then buy at Apple AOC or Education store whichever you feel you qualify for ;-) That is at least 20% in net discount…

      • You can get 15% off $20 apple gift cards today at coles

        • +1

I don’t think they will have 250+ of those GCs available for you to buy in one go 😉

    • -1

Any chance they ask for union UI on pickup?

    • You are in the wrong thread. We were talking about overpriced laptops ;)

    • How can someone purchase from the AOC (obviously not being a teacher/etc apart of the union already)?

I’m very intrigued. I’ve been looking on the regular au-hed store, and that was a significant savings on retail as it was.
The AOC store represents a further ~$215 savings on top of that :O
