Damn, that's a great price. Got the 256GB for $960 last week.

    • Its probably better to Drop ship the Steam Deck as it starts from USD $399… which converts to about AUD $557 at todays rate…

      • +1

Never heard of drop ship, is that like package forwarding?
Worth noting that forwarding the steam deck means you pay 10% GST plus whatever fee the forwarding service charges. Honestly at these prices you probably won't be saving a huge amount but will be saving hassle and getting it quicker.

Edit: if anyone was interested in comparing forwarding the steam deck from Valve directly, these are the price differences (assuming 10% tax and a flat $75 shipping fee added to the Valve price - I have no idea about this exact costing)
        64gb - $107, 256gb - $11, 512gb - $79.

  • +4

why need lots GB can we just use sd card?

    • +11

You can, but it's much slower. Fine for older titles or emulation though.

        • +10

          https://www.reddit.com/r/SteamDeck/comments/t4ky09/nvme_vs_s…

matters little for emulations or indie games

about 3x worse for larger AAA titles

and no data out there for anyone to make claims for RANDOM read writes

so basically common sense would prevail that SSD will give u better or same performance more consistently

          • +12

@furythree: It's really not 3x worse for AAA titles according to that graph. Only death stranding is at that figure. If you take it as an anomaly, which it seems to be, and then take it out of the equation, the SD card is only 33% slower in load times. Sounds like a bit but it'd only be seconds in most real time applications.

              • @Ulysses31: As I said, it sounds bad, but it's going to equate to seconds in most cases.

You're not generally buying a Deck for super performance. If that's what you're after, you're better off with the newer 6800u models. Buy the Deck for it's support, community, ergonomics etc.

              • -3

@Ulysses31: yeah 5 seconds instead 3 seconds, how terrible

                you insane?

              • @Ulysses31: are you jelly? sent from my nine steam decks

          • +5

@furythree: choose an outlier to make false statements, is this the ozb way?

      • +5

I mean the steam deck is just an amazing retro system

      • do you even own a steam deck?

        • See first comment, added a 512GB MicroSD partitioned half for Win 11, half for SteamOS

    • Load times are probably be slower on the SD card.

    • +12

Many folks just replace the internal storage themselves though.

      • +3

A few folks will be buying the biggest storage because replacing internal storage is alien to them.

        • +10

Also I think the screen material is different

          • @BarneyKB: Correct, it's matte/anti-reflective.

It gets filthy though, I put on a nice glossy screen protector and now I can just wipe away those greasy finger marks.

            • -2

@zaprct: Half correct , only applies to 512

              • +5

@Jimothy Wongingtons: I'm replying to a thread in the conversation where ChickenAdobo was talking about 'the biggest storage' so I thought this was understood

        • +4

I replaced mine with the 1tb SSD. I wouldn't say I'm all that tech savvy, just followed a youtube video.

          • @Ruddaga: What did you pay for it?

            • +3

@NuttyGoodness: The SSD? Grabbed it from ebay for…..252 aud. Got a WD PC SN530 M.2 2230 SSD 1TB NVMe. Works like a charm. Games boot up as fast as my SSD in my desktop.

              • +1

@Ruddaga: I’m not sure if I can justify the extra cost just yet but I’ll keep an eye out for those. Thanks for the info

                • +5

@NuttyGoodness: My justification was getting the 512gb one costs way more 😅

                  • +1

@Ruddaga: Hahaha I got the 512 for the anti glare screen. I got some mates who will probably get them too so if they get the 64gb I could give them my 512 ssd and upgrade to a 1tb but I’ll see how the prices go

              • @Ruddaga: Do you need to buy an ssd model to upgrade? or is there an open slot in the base model?

                • +1

@samtrois: There's a micro sd slot you can use for slower storage that you can just plop in. Or you can replace the SSD inside with a bigger one which involves opening it up, unhooking some things and creating a boot usb to reinstall the Steam OS software. Entire process took about 20-30 mins with a youtube video

                • @samtrois: As Rudduga, it's super easy and genuinely only takes about 20 mins all in.

    • +2

I've seen mentions of the size of the shader cache being an issue.

      • In CarX I have white gloss vinyls showing up as a gross grey. I’m guessing that’s the issue? Only issue I’ve had so far and it doesn’t worry me

      • +1

It absolutely is, despite the comments from folks above who most likely haven't tested this.
How anyone can argue the use cases of the speed and durability of a MicroSD compared to an SSD is beyond me.

        • There are a lot of crazies out there.

    • +2

Apparently 64gb deck is useless due to shader cache which only save to internal storage.

    • +1

even though its not recommended by valve, you can install a new 2230 nvme drive. iirc the higher storage steam decks have some extra things, like the 512gb has an anti-glare screen, but its up to you if you want so spend that much just for a couple extra bells and whistles + storage, or just get a cheaper one and get your own ssd and install it yourself

      • +3

I believe Valve has only discouraged replacing the 2230 with SSDs of a greater physical length. I haven't seen them discourage replacing it with a new single sided 2230.
To anybody thinking of doing the replacement - make sure to turn off the device and disconnect the battery. There have been a fair few reports of people bricking their deck by forgetting to do this. Plenty of helpful guides out there.

        • Thanks for the tip

        • +1

And don't forget to eject SD card before popping the cover, or else it goes flying and is often destroyed.

    • +2

Saves $250 on steam deck coz theyre a bargain hunter, then spends $2500 on an iphone without hesitating

    • You still can buy nvme later and upgrade it

  • +3

Don't forget discounted gift cards, one of my portals gets 7% off kogan.

    • +1

      Which one?

      • +1

This one, I don't know if I have permission to post about it on OZB, it's a very small mob that offers a portal for businesses (I got my initial membership via my insurance).

      • +1

If you have access to RewardGateway through your employer they have 5% off.

      • +1

Kogan GC is 5% off on Reward Gateway.

  • +7

Got mine few weeks ago. No regrets, it's amazing!!!!!

    • +1

      It's so big though.

      • +4

Subjective. I don’t mind it, some might

I have a switch oled with the split pad pros so it’s comparable

It’s the cost of the high specs I guess. The system is weighted very well so balances well in the hand

        • What's have you done so far with it? :)

          • +7

@MagicTsukai: I already have a library for 350+ so I’m struggling to focus but finished quantum break and now playing SW Fallen order. Trying to focus on 1 game at a time…. But failing lol

            Also Xbox cloud works well!!

            • @britta: I was going to dual boot windows to get Xbox game pass support on it but I want a 1tb micro SD first

              • @NuttyGoodness: U can just stream u know…

                • +1

@Jimothy Wongingtons: If it has the same slight delay that it has on mobile I’ll probably still dual boot. Plus that would give me access to GOG library and COD MW2

                  • +3

@NuttyGoodness: You can fairly easily install your GOG and Epic Store games using the Heroic Launcher app. Just download it using the Discover app when you boot into desktop mode.

You can even create a Steam shortcut so you can boot it like all of your other games in Gaming mode.

                    • @zaprct: Does steam OS have the drivers the games need? I thought the main reason for dual booting windows was the driver support

                      • @NuttyGoodness: Even Steams own library mostly doesn’t have Linux support bar a few games. The trick it’s using is Proton which is a Linux compatibility tool to run windows games. Eg when you play God of War on Steam Deck, it’s automatically using Proton to make that work.

When you install GOG or Epic games via Heroic, you can pick which version of Proton you want the game to boot using.

Anything with anticheat software and also games with shitty launchers might not work though.

              • +1

@NuttyGoodness: Something to consider: If you're going to be using Windows frequently, something like a portable SSD (Samsung T7) might be a better option for longevity. I've stuck mine to the back of the Deck using 3M Velcro strips. The only issue was that the included cable was too long, so I opted for something shorter from Amazon.

              • @NuttyGoodness: Got any microsd suggestions?

                • @tanksinatra: The only ones I have so far are 512gb and 128gb Samsung pro plus that I’m going to use for emulators. I missed out on the 1tb digi direct eBay deal the other day. I think the Steam Deck max sd speed is 100mb/s so even the Samsung Evo plus should work the same

            • @britta: What kind if WiFi / Internet Connection setup do you have?

              • @thegreatermamba: I have google nest wifi. NBN to the node. Pulls 10MB per sec download from steam

                • @britta: Thanks. Is that a WiFi 6 router? I have Eero 5 (WiFi 5) and Telstra 110Mbps connection. Wondering if it'd work

        • I've also got a switch oled and thinking about getting this but not sure if it's worth having 2x similar styles of console? I thought all switch games had PC versions also available on steam so I don't see much benefit. Do you find it's an upgrade to a switch, so you won't play the switch anymore and can sell it?

          • +1

@x x: It’s 200% upgrade so now anything outside of switch exclusives will be played on my steam deck now. First party Nintendo will still jam on my switch.

      • My Vita is too small, so many hand cramps.

      • Its more for playing in bed or on the couch. Or possibly on plane trips.

      • -1

It’s made for adult hands unlike the switch

    • +2

I’m a huge fan. Finally getting into all those platformers in my steam library has been great

      • What platformers are you playing? I recently started Shovel Knight and it is excellent. Fun but challenging.

        • +3

I’ve been playing Hollow Knight mostly and it’s been great, after that I might play shovel knight, Ori, Cuphead or Dead Cells. Hi-Fi Rush looks interesting too and I don’t think I finished Oddworld: Abe’s Exodus so they’re on the table. *adding Neon Abyss to that list

A few hack and slash games are also in the list like God of War and Elden Ring

  • +1

I mentioned it on the old thread and thought the original thread was updated to reflect…

Anyway got my 256gb in the first kogan shipment and have filed price project with 28d . Cheering.

Can recommend for anyone even remotely thinking about this device

Edit I see hamza reverted the change and suggested a new post - fair enough

    • Would you recommend this for someone who wants to play games that are better on PC, like CSGO, Dota, New World. Are we able to connect this with a 1080p monitor, mouse and keyboard and still get good performance?

      • +4

I personally would say while you could play with mouse and keyboard it kinda defeats the purpose.

I am having a a blast with tekken 7, persona 5 and sleeping dogs. After I finish sleeping dogs for the 10000000 time, I will be going back to replay mgsv and no man’s sky.

Also yet to start Jedi fallen order, rdr2 and dmc5 that I picked up last week

        1080

Consider that this runs natively at 800p. On the smallish screen, it still looks fantastic.

1080 you may need to turn some settings down. On a 65 inch it’s not gonna looks THAT great

      • -6

you really shouldn’t use it for csgo. I don’t know what you consider playable but it will only get around 100fps.

      • Its really only good for the form factor / lower resolution + tiny screen.

Once you start looking at 1080 monitors etc, you might as well just get a desktop for the $ and performance.

As is, it's an impressive machine. And I say this as someone with a 3070ti laptop and 4090 desktop.

        • Yeah the SD really shows how garbage the Switch hardware is. Really impressed with it so far

          • -1

@NuttyGoodness: I wish Nintendo would just surprise us and release a Switch Pro that is at least on par with this thing…. But reports recently said they're amping up production of their current models not building a new one… kind of disappointing.

        • +2

Just dropped in to say I hate you for having all the toys!

      • +1

If you want it to be used to replace pc, do note that the cpu inside it has a 15 watt limit. You can try pushing it further but it won't get any performance benefit. It can still push csgo go 120fps at 1080p though.

If plugged in is what you want, consider something with a ryzen 7 6800u. The gdp win 4 is the currently cheapest device with it, and it can push up to 35w to squeeze another 45% performance, putting it between a gtx 1050 to a gtx 1650.

        • GPD are also known for the worst support with warranties and repairs.

          • @Vita85: I mean, if you want to avoid gpd, aya do exist, and their upcoming line will have a 6800u as well.

The way I see it, as they're overseas companies anyways, they're equally frustrating to get support for. I do trust valve way more, and the steam decks looks way more repairable. But it's not enough for me to sacrifice the spec bump.

    • How's the battery life for you?
