There are heaps of other overseas or grey sellers, this is really only worth it if you believe that you can use your Australian consumer rights to chase down a resolution to your problems

    • I don't think the student bean discount works for
      the marketplace items

  • As I am travelling back to Europe in 2 weeks I just ordered one directly from Valve over there (and got it delivered to family actually today).
Paid 419€ which would still be cheaper than the cheapest deal on eBay in $AUD but not by much (~120$ less). Now thinking about warranty though and if it make sense to get one here if something breaks.
But guess an eBay seller acting as a middleman won’t be much help then either. Thoughts?

    • +1

Just keep what you ordered. If you need warranty support (although unlikely), you can always send it back to your family in Europe and then claim warranty locally?

      • Depends how much it’s going to cost for postage both ways

        • But I think ordering things over eBay from a reseller won’t get me proper warranty either!? Guess Kogan would be an option but then it is actually around 250$ more than what I paid now.
That’s my 1TB ssd to put in there…

  • +1

Finally pulled the trigger, 256GB. Will see when it’s arrived.
Any must have accessories to recommend?

    • +1

SD card is a no brainer
Dock or charging dock so it’s not lying around when charging.
      Maybe glass screen protector

Apart from that nothing else as it comes with a case

    • +1

Should have bought a 64GB version and upgraded to 1TB yourself. Get at least 512GB MicroSD.

    • +1

1tb sd card that’s about it.

Yet to see any good quality docks locally. The choice seems to be the jsaux one but its only available overseas it looks like

  • -4

    No OLED, no bueno

  • -1

Don’t bother with the 64gb. Shader cache gets full very quickly

    • +3

There a few solutions to amend this like https://github.com/scawp/Steam-Deck.Shader-Cache-Killer
Should be ok if you are happy to tinker with the system which I guess is the target audience for this device really.
Ordered a 64GB one, will put a big SD in there and if I still like it in a few months I’ll upgrade the SSD.

  • +2

Oh if only I had time, much much more time

  • Wait for the official release!

    • +1

As tempted as I am for the deck, I'll likely wait for their confirmed follow up Deck 2. I'm a bit time-poor these next two years.
Either that, or I'll get the announcement that Valve are distributing to AUS sometime soon and just impulse buy, especially if it is at a good price.

      • If it helps, the next release probably won’t come with a performance increase according to Valve. I would guess better battery life, better screen and a lighter, more portable hardware design will be on the cards though.

“Right now the fact that all the Steam Decks can play the same games and that we have one target for users to understand what kind of performance level to expect when you’re playing and for developers to understand what to target… there’s a lot of value in having that one spec,” says Griffais.

“I think we’ll opt to keep the one performance level for a little bit longer, and only look at changing the performance level when there is a significant gain to be had,” he adds.” https://www.theverge.com/23499215/valve-steam-deck-interview…

With the recession coming, best to hold off on "big" purchases this year.

        • Conversely, with a recession there might never be another Steam Deck.

          • @Ghost47: Valve is a big company, and the Steam Deck will be a money pot for them in the future.
The other companies are scared and will come up with their own versions if they want market share.

            • +1

@congo: It doesn’t matter how big a company is if there’s a global recession.

I want this, but my wife and time won't allow me :(

Bought 64GB model from Expansys (here: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/751777) shipped for $730 on 19th, of Jan, which arrived last week. Impressive bit of hardware.

Have paired it with a 512gb micro SD from here for $75: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/753104

And a Gioneda (SK Hynix) 1TB 2230 SSD per here from Alibaba for approx $185: https://www.reddit.com/r/SteamDeck/comments/wkmf5s/cheap_1tb…

The SSD hasn't arrived yet but I'm thoroughly impressed with how Proton and SteamOS works on the SteamDeck…

For those asking, Proton (the linux windows emulation layer of sorts) is what will separate the steamdeck from the Aya products, as well as Valve's legendary support.

I will try dual booting windows but honestly am considering not bothering. With Lutris via the linux desktop you can play pretty much anything, apart from native Gamepass.

    It's a no brainer.

Even though its relatively huge and the screen could perhaps be a little better (at least have smaller bezels), this thing is amazing.

I'm hanging out for Valve to release a screen upgrade eventually, as a steamdeck 2 feels a long, long way off.

The value is incredible compared to anything else, especialy the GPD/Aya stuff.

As someone who's steam library consists of over 1000 games, the potential is humungous.

My only regret now is buying a few games on other shopfronts (such as Hitman 3 and RDR2 on Epic, or Cyberpunk on GOG), albeit they likely work okay with Lutris (haven't tested many), it's just another slight bit of work to get them going and natively relying on Valve's proton implementation would be nicer.

    • +2

Use GOG Galaxy and/or Heroic Launcher for GOG, Epic and Ubisoft games.
And you can use Boilr after that to get the shortcuts made within SteamOS with ease.

    • So Windows store versions of "Xbox Play Anywhere" titles (such as Streets Of Rage 4) can be installed natively? I understand games via the Gamepass app cannot.

  • How would Warranty claims be with this?

    • Through Kogan.

      • +1

So pretty tough then I'd imagine, Kogan's always been awful at resolving any issues I've had.

        • True. Of all options currently available to buy Steam Deck, it would be the best chance you have.

          • @aveeno bb: Mmmmmmmm, very tempted. But might still hold out for official release whenever that is…

  • These are not the official Australian release, correct? As it's not yet been launched in Oz. So this is a US or Europe version I'm guessing?

Do we have any idea whether the Oz release will be a cheaper price?

    • +2

My guess is that if Valve had planned to release the Steam Deck here in Oz, they would have done so by now. They have probably come to the conclusion that it's not worth it. Same as with their Valve Index VR goggles. Never made it to Australia.

      • I hope it's not the case they think it's not worth selling it here, it was mentioned in a video around February or March last year that they were working hard to launch it here. Not sure what would have changed to make them not want to sell it here.

There is a page on Valve's website where you can contact Gaben, I filled it out asking (nicely) if there's any estimate on when it'll be officially launched here but no reply (as yet anyway). I would suggest others do the same so that maybe Gaben himself can see that there's high demand for it here.

Plenty of people on Twitter are tweeting at @OnDeck (or whatever it is) in a really spoilt, aggressive and entitled way, if I was Gaben seeing that kind of thing I'd be annoyed especially after how much trouble the government gave them with the L4D2 censorship back in like 2010 or something.

    • +1

Yes, these are not Australian stock and is imported from another region. This may explain the varying lead times because we don't expect Kogan to hold a lot of stock. The general consensus is there will be an Australian release but your guess will be as good as everyone's. There is also agreement that the Australian pricing may be more (GST and the 'Aussie tax').

      • Thanks @maxbon and @Davesday.
I guess too that once/if we do get an Aussie release, given that it will likely be priced higher due to 'Aussie tax', there's a good chance that these Kogan deals may increase too. As long as they're cheaper than the Aussie one, people will probably buy them.

        Food for thought anyway.

    • There isn't any regional differences in the Steam Deck. The only differences are the model differences, e.g. storage size, matte screen.

The only real difference is the charger included.

Think of it like buying an iPhone from Kogan, internally it's basically all the same parts (as far as user experience goes anyway) but the charger is different. I was hanging out for an official release here, but seeing that Kogan add in an AU charger I don't think it's that important to wait for an official release.

The main issue is getting a warranty claim done if required, since it's basically like a grey import.

  • Im still waiting for my order to arrive which was placed on Jan 14. The auspost tracking keeps updating to a later date. Fingers crossed it arrives tomorrow! Im metro sydney, not sure why its taking so long. The peoole who got theirs already, same experience? Little bummed its taking this long tbh

    HOLY WOWZERS! BATCHEST!

  • +1

Got the 512gb imported last November.

A great device, would definitely recommend if you are on the fence about if you will use it.

  • +1

I been checking comments and tutorial videos since the last Kogan and Expansys deal thinking that I'll buy one on the next price drop or if there's a local release date announced. I still haven't pulled the trigger because I don't want to be dealing with either for warranty but it's incredibly tempting at these prices now.

  • Great deal. I got mine from directly importing it and it was around the same price.
This just saves a ton of effort.

  • +1

Just as information to anyone looking at buying from Kogan

Have a look here regarding their performance and practices:

    https://www.productreview.com.au/listings/kogan

  • My first world problem with my Steam Deck so far…. Most of the games I would like to play on the unit are available via Game Pass (eg. Yakuza Dragon, Middle-Earth Shadow of War, Wasteland 3…). So, so far, I have only been using it as a streaming device.

My mind won't let me pay for a game to play on the Steam Deck that I can currently play with my discounted Game Pass….

    • Can't you use game pass on the Steam deck? You can boot it in windows.

      • Yes, game pass (via MS Edge browser) works on the steam deck, and without needing Windows.

Mind you, i can also stream game pass on my phone with a controller connected for the same experience.

Just dont have a game yet to play on steam deck that isn't available via game pass, or that actually works on the steam deck. Currently playing Knights Tale (Steam PC) and that's hell chugga chugga on the steam deck (as it's not supported)

  • Ok, I heard about this thing a few years ago, I thought it got canned, first time hearing about it being fo real. Quick couple of questions;

    • for titles like PUBG, CSGO and Siege, it looks like it would run them smoothly, correct?

    • for above titles, is it possible to 'dock' this thing and connect to a larger monitor (maybe a 144hz monitor) and benefit from those kind of refresh rates, even if its just a 1080p panel or something?

    • and again for the above titles, can we use a mouse and keyboard, fps are always better (imo) with mouse and keyboard.

I'm basically thinking about it for my son, he mainly plays PS4, likes some games I play on my desktop gaming pc, but the price point of buying into gaming pc is a bit steep and this looks to be a pretty neat 'everything' kinda thing he might really appreciate. Basically a device that kinda does tablet like things (streaming etc) but then a PROPER gaming thing.

    TIA!

    • +1

CSGo will work. PUBG and Seige are broken at the moment, unless you take the time to install Windows onto it.

Check out https://www.protondb.com/ to check for game compatibility.

      • Thanks!

    • +1

To answer your question, the Steam Deck is getting playable frame rates because it runs at 720p. So whether you could get playable frame rates at 1080p would depend on the game, I'd recommend watching a video with people using it docked on your son's kind of games.

      • Thanks!

  • just curious can you actually connect a mouse and keyboard to this thing?

  • Any idea how much cheaper (if at all) will the Aus release be (any ideas when this will be released here?)?

    • +3

You will be waiting for months if they ever release it at all. I wouldn't think it's much cheaper unless they try to clear out the stock for Steam Deck 2 or upgraded version.

      • This is exactly what I suspect will happen.

      • This is what I was thinking…… how would it be cheaper and there is no release date or even rumoured release date. Did you happen to purchase one? Is it any good?

        • Yeah I got one from Vchain/Kogan when it was $691 for a 64GB model, then upgraded with 1TB SSD from Alibaba.

It's been great ever since. So much you can customise (install Epic Launcher, GOG, Xbox Cloud, etc).

    • yeah good luck with that it took a few years after the valve Index was released before they finally had australian versions.

  • -3

In what reality are AUD796 equivalent to the $399 that the entry-level model costs in the US? It is embarrassing on Valve's part not to sell the device here in Australia.

    HODL!

And screw dodgy dealers like Kogan who use in-demand products like the Steam Deck to trap customers in their loyalty program.

    HODL! HODL! HODL!

    • +4

It's about $610 AUD after GST (which they don't list on sales)

Excluding import duties and what have you - it's a lot better but considering our consumer protection laws I can't see it being less than $699 from Valve, probably more like $749.

  • +3

I bought a 64gb Steam deck a few weeks ago from Jack Deals for $660. They are now selling them for $646. I was skeptical it was a scam due to price but it arrived no problem and is working perfectly. There is an option to buy with PayPal so felt comfortable if it didn't arrive I could claim refund. I tried to register deal on Oz bargain but apparently they are banned due to cancelled ABN.

    • Wow that's a great price for it. I think even cheaper than buying from Valve and forwarding it over!
      What was delivery times like?

      • Just over a week, I was really worried I got scammed 🤣

        • One thing I read in their 'about us' section is that they supposedly open the box to 'check the quality of the product's. Did it look opened? Seems like a weird thing to say, but I suspect they might pass some products off as new when they're actually refurbished.

          • @Ranike: No it was sealed in plastic wrap and had a plastic valve tag tied to zipper of case

    • Wow that’s exactly the retail price from valve (with current exchange rates)…
Was there a large shopping fee on top? Otherwise they must make next to nothing with those prices.

      • There was free delivery or option for insured delivery for $25. I took the free delivery option

      • +1

Gman2000s account is only 2 days old and they have only commented on this deal.

Use that information as you wish.

        • Jack's has the option to pay with paypal, so you'll have protection in the unlikely case it's a scam

        • +1

          That is true

    • Yeah something does seem off about the Jack Deals but Paypal is great for issues, so I have taken the leap too and will see how we go.

      • +2

Hope it arrives all good for you. I didn't tell my wife until it arrived and she just said it is the worst thing I ever bought as I'm on it so the time 😂

        • Arrived after a week and no issues at all, it even came with an AU power adapter for the type A plug which is a solid quality.

          • @timpo: For all the JackDeals out there, fear not. I am in North QLD and I just got mine today too. Steam Deck came unopened, seal in tact, with a International Power Converter in the package. Ordered 64gb version on the 3rd and got delivered today the 13th. (Would have been 10th but I had to fix up an address issue) So far so good, screen protector and case have been installed and shes been running nicely so far.

    • Did you end up paying any additional taxes when it entered Aus?

      • It was shipped from within oz via Aus post do didn't pay anything

        • Interesting, their website states they are based in HK. Anyways, did they also provide a AU power adapter for the charger?

    • +1

Placed order with jack deal at cheaper $670, (cancelled kogan order as their eta changed to 22/2)
Found the SD 64gb delivered after work just now, took just a week.

      8/2 placed order
      9/2 received tracking number auspost
14/2 auspost receive package for processing
15/2 out for delivery, then delivereed

package came from VIC to NSW
      so excited!

edit: came with simple power adapter attached to the outside of the box

  • Anyone here connect this to an external monitor, keyboard, mouse and headset to play CSGO at 1080p 60hz? How does it run?

    • +1

I read somewhere (I think on reddit) it hits about 100fps.

You'll need a hub unless you are using BT peripherals as it only has the single USB-C out. Preferably a hub with PD pass-through. I'm not really aware of any monitors that have a high wattage PD situation to charge the deck otherwise.

      • I see.. is that for 1080p or is it on the Deck itself?

All that stuff about the hub required makes sense.

        • Hmm couple of videos on Youtube show pretty decent performance. This video is pretty good for anyone interested. There's another one but it's over 1 hr long.

  • Just a heads up for anyone ordering this - it will not ship Feb 3rd. Everyone who has ordered this has an email with their order being delayed to Feb 22nd.

    • Expected dispatch date in order history is 3rd Feb. Let's see what happens tomorrow.
Also on product page, it now says leaving warehouse in 1-2 business days, I don't think it was there yesterday when I ordered. Might be a positive sign :)

      • +1

Ordered mine 23rd Jan - got the email a week ago to say it was delayed. I also know someone who ordered yesterday and got the delay email today. Fingers crossed for tomorrow but I’m not holding my breath.

        • I just got a 'delayed till 9/2' message.

          • @SaddenAscentAspirin: Same here. about to cancel it.

            • @angelsdsd: I can't cancel, don't have the option. "contacted support" to cancel and they send me an automated message telling me to click cancel, which I can't do.

Also it's another 20 dollars cheaper.

              • @SaddenAscentAspirin: .. That sucks. I did have the cancel order option on the order page.
I have cancelled my 256GB from Kogan now and bought the 64GB from Catch after that, using the gift card from my work bring the price down to $645. Not bad at the end. Time to find a decent SSD to replace the 64GB.
                Good luck.

            • +1

@angelsdsd: Smart move - mine was delayed until the 22nd, then back to the 9th, now back to the 22nd. I have a feeling they only sent the emails about the 9th so they could leave it as shipping on the 10th on their website to generate more sales. Bit dodgy.

          • @SaddenAscentAspirin: @shamowfski I got the same email, but now got another email sayings it’s the 22nd so that’s fun.

            • +1

@cdla9: I cancelled and ordered from vchain via kogan. It was 40 dollars cheaper ($755) and has supposedly already shipped (ordered yesterday). I had gift cards for kogan through work so I was kind of stuck using them. If you google 'vchain kogan steam deck' you should find it. I think heybattery was another seller with the same price/stock. All that being said, I believe the ad said 'leaves warehouse in 2-3 days' when I ordered, and estimated shipping date was the 9th. It says 2-4 days now I think. Anyway, good luck. My SSD from the US actually arrived before my steam deck from here.
