I'm Surprising My Wife with a New Tesla Today. How Should I Reveal The Surprise?

Hi Everyone,

I've bought a Tesla Model 3 for my wife and pick it up today. She is working until 7pm and doesn't know about it. Just trying to figure out what the best way to give it to her is and need some ozbargain wisdom.

Any other ideas are welcome.

    • and then…?

cool story bro, is your life so dull you need to brag to strangers.

do you take millions of selfies and phots of your food too.

seriously congrats on the car, but do you self validation for this.

    • Mate this is incredibly wholesome - no idea what half these other people are going on about..
The world needs more people like you as there's so many people who are lacking thoughtfulness, respect, love, self sacrifice and generosity for their spouse out there (a good portion of them seem to be in this thread too).. What ever happened to pulling out a chair or holding open a door without expecting something in return or feeling your sense of 'manliness' has been damaged.

Big respect to you for being such a good husband and I hope the dinner was wonderful

    • So there wasn't much of a surprise then, more like Ozb I bought a Tesla for my wife lol

  • Make sure you take her to dinner at fitzzys.

  • +1

You have discussed buying the Tesla with her even down to ‘running the numbers’.

Did you also discuss which model 3 she would be happy with and the colours? Most likely.

    Doubt she’ll be surprised.

  • 1) arrange to meet wife in front of lobby
    2) walk with wife to the pick up/set down zone in front of lobby
    3) press the "smart summon" button

It goes either two ways from here:

    4) get "lucky" tonight* / get divorce papers

    Additional plot twist
    * get caught on cameras and bonus points on making it on A Current Affair headlines

For a moment i thought i had logged into Whirlpool.

I've been losing interest in Tesla since Model 3 was released, it's truly an electric car for the masses now especially the non-performance models, nothing special anymore. Plus there's Elon Musk to top it off, he was still bearable when I had mine years ago.

    • +1

The price of it does not make it ‘an electric car for the masses’.

    • +6

If you lost interest in Model 3 due to Elon Musk, VW beetle drivers must be miserable.

Yeah anyone buying a Tesla 3 atm with what is known about them isn't the brightest. They used to be the top of their game and now they're just a below-average car that you shouldn't touch due to build quality issues, lagging technology and their moron of a CEO. Much better options out there now for electric vehicles.

Had the best time last night. My women came around with a new Tesla her hubby bought… We had reeces

OP is like Scomo, sectetly taking on the Ministry of War and Finance role, and making secret huge decisions behind the elected ministers back.

    Good luck with that OP.

    • +1

Correction. Scomo did that behind all of Australia's back and used the pandemic to give money to his religious mates.

      • +1

And promised $18m shut up money to governor general.

  • +2

Get her a new husband with the tesla because her current husband is getting dating advice from ozbargain…

    • +2

      Should have asked chatGPT instead

      • +1

        I asked chatGPT:

Here are a few ideas for surprising your wife with the Tesla Model 3:

Plan a special date night: Take her out for dinner or a movie, and then surprise her with the car in the parking lot or at home.

Plan a scavenger hunt: Create a scavenger hunt that leads her to the car, with clues or riddles along the way.

Wrap it up like a present: Wrap the car up like a present and place it in the driveway or in the garage with a big bow on top.

Have friends or family involved: Gather close friends or family and have them help you reveal the surprise to her.

Whichever way you choose, make sure to capture the moment and share it with her. She is sure to be overjoyed and appreciative of the thoughtful surprise.

        • Third one sounds alot like dic in a box.

  • +2

I reckon it doesn't matter what you do. The fact you spent $100,000 on something without telling her you were going to will be enough of a surprise. Enjoy dinner!

Edit: I see the model 3 comes in at a bit under $65,000, but my point remains.

Edit edit: I now see you've already taken her out to dinner. I hope it went well. What did you have?

  • wow this forum is full of jealous idiots

  • I'd have to ask my wife's permission.

  • +2

Consider giving her their horrendous privacy policy first (so she knows that accepting it will mean she is accepting 24x7x365 surveillance and recording of her every expression, conversation, trip, GPS location, incident, problem, idea expressed in the vehicle… and sharing that with multiple unnamed service providers nearly all of whom employ people all over the world, few of which could possibly get caught (and if so in any way held accountable) for selling and sharing that data with world+dog.

    https://www.tesla.com/en_au/legal/privacy

    • +1

Clearly didn't read your own link

      • +1

Clearly you are assured by their lead-in of claims about data-dissociation designed to obviscate reality without incurring liability. The reality is revealed in the hidden sections below when you appreciate that de-identification has never proven to be at all reliable.

The practical truth about data dissociation is fraught with the bodies of many attempting it. AI globally, eg some of the world's largest corporations, governments, and social networks, join these 'dissociated dots', and relate the identities, not just Tesla's AIs.

Once this is done, any trust you place in the intentions or activities of those who persistently collect such detailed data is negated and all your data belong to it (them).

        Game over.

But worse when you consider the data is all collected via trunk and provider-level taps, and access very commonly compromised by multiple nefarious parties over the long term.

        • +3

Now - You’re just a conspiracy theorist nutjob.

Future - Dur. Everyone knew that all along, no one ever denied it.

          • -1

@mapax: Yet you do not provide a single reference/reason that disputes the facts presented:

            • That Tesla is/can/will log and share anything short of all the data they can about the car, you and what you and it does, and what everyone around it does, back seat, front seat, bonnet, garage, house, traffic, etc.
            • That they can use this information against you however they like, as they do presently when customers make warranty and legal claims
            • That they can share all the data they can collect with others- regardless of why and how the data is demanded, provided or paid for.
            • That they insist you agree that they can share all this however they like so long as they (make a weak and vague claim to) de-identify it.
            • That de-identification only works in very finite ways, and that related datasets do not enable the deidentified data to be re-associated to the originating identities en masse

            Not one.

And yet this is all a conspiracy, and others are crazy.

All that is clear is that you are keen to abuse someone whose perspective you can't understand, or simply choose to disagree with.

            • +3

@resisting the urge: Read my second sentence again.

I was poking fun at the people who would call you a conspiracy theorist for not trusting big tech and then in the future they would claim they knew the whole time and lie about it…

              • +2

                @mapax: Oh… I now see… the light!

                Humblest apologies.

Thank you for illuminating my day. I can see I'm not the only one that's mad on OzB!

  • +1

You're surprising her with a TASER?

Oh…a Tesla. I'd have enjoyed the Taser more.

  • Is it a Yellow Tesla? If so you can Congratulations Mrs Nassif. You like?

  • +3

    so where's the wife's reaction???

  • -1

Tesla recently reduced the price on their cars around the world. Germany 20%. US 20%. China 17%. Australia 2%. So go ahead and support the company that milks us on price.

Rather support the Chinese brands if I am going to go for an EV if that is the attitude Tesla is going to have.

    • +1

Do you realise the reason Tesla has a huge margin is because of their economy of scale, advances in manufacturing and battery technology? It has been a number of years since the Model 3 and Y were released and over that time the mega casting has reduced their bottom line and battery costs have dropped. If it wasn't for the pandemic ans supply chain issues, the ramp up would have even more and I'm sure there would have been bigger price drops. Their mission statement is to accelerate the transition to sustainable energy. Can you say the same by supporting Chinese brands?

      • If the Chinese companies only have to keep promises at the rate Elon does, sure why not.

  • +3

Good luck, hope you get a positive reaction! The Model 3 have has lost alot of its lustre and novelty and getting abit long in the tooth as a model. There are some that view it more like the new Corolla these days.

  • +2

Turn your main switch off. When wifey comes and asks why there is no power, say "there is a TeslaTron in the garage drawing all the power from the grid".

She walks up to the garage and sees the Tesla. You, behind her, yell "Surpriseeeee".

She slaps you and starts packing her bags.

  • +1

Hope she didn’t buy one to surprise you too

  • +1

I see the 90% of guys who live in absolute fear of their wives have appeared today.

What a waste of a life.

    • +3

Sadly, I know a couple of guys who live in constant fear of even slightly upsetting their wives, due to the consequences. It's a problem seldom talked about in the community.

      • -1

        Which community?

        • Communist community

      • -1

        lol Yeah…

  • If it has 'Autopilot', drive up to her pretending to be asleep.

  • +1

    The OP had Rich $ex

  • we can take your new car.

At that point she proceeded to slap him across the face at wasting so much money on a car, and then she proceeds to the nearest drain and drops the keycard down and calls her mum and stayed there that night

  • -2

hello there good lookin, need a secret gay lover?

  • +1

Maybe walk into the house holding a kitchen sink?

  • Nice car congrats.

  • +2

Roll up and yell "I'M RICH, BITCH"

  • -1

Surprise her by going through the checklist of things that are regularly found wrong with the car and fixing them before you give it to her so she doesn't drive a hatch job car

    https://blog.tesbros.com/tesla-delivery-checklist/

  • +6

Y'all got trolled. OP doesn't even give us what her actual reaction was.

  • +2

This Elon Musk fan fiction is getting a bit odd. That’s enough internet for me today.

  • Bought my wife a Audi as a surprise.

I picked her up headed towards a lunch place next to Audi at the shopping center next to it. Went in on the guise of going "swinging in to look Audi since we were just there". Surprised her with the new owner walk through fanfare when you buy a new car.

Teed it up with the dealer as well so they knew what to do.

    • +2

Ok, but what was her reaction?

      • +5

There’s a theme here, talk about what you did but don’t disclose what went down (presumably out of embarrassment)

      • +2

        Surprised. Happy. Elated.

        All of the above?

What are you guys expecting? Doomsday?

  • +3

This sounds just like when I surprised my wife by bringing home some Chinese takeaway.

    • What was her reaction?

      • +4

Ecstatic. Who doesn't love a succulent Chinese meal?

  • Good job op!

Back in the day i did a day trip to sydney to buy a supra and drive it back. Drove to the (then) gf's house and said come outside, she didnt believe it was mine lol

Always good to have some fun and surprise someone

  • Any update?

  • +1

Honestly, Teslas are becoming bogan chique nowadays. Every cashed up bogan builder is buying them. It's kind of like buying an angus burger at McDonald's and thinking you're super classy. I'd never buy one anymore, they're just a sign of being unoriginal and a little bit boring. It's kind of like a few years ago when everyone bought AirPods at my work, I went the opposite way and bought some giant Sony headphones… don't want to be like everyone else.

      • +1

I can afford it. Why would you assume I cannot? Is that your natural thought process to make arbitrary assumptions? Why are you so butt hurt about someone else's opinion on a car?

My next car will be an electric car, whenever that is and I will be doing plenty of research in the meantime. You are right though, can't really tell until I do a test drive. Plenty of manufacturers have their own e - vehicle now: porsche, audi, VW, Jaguar, Renault… I'll think about how much I want to spend when the time comes.

I am close to paying off my house, so more I spend, the more of my redraw amount I'll lose, which is the only consideration.

    • +2

Nice car, it's not a luxury car. It's very popular among the Uber drives in the west coast of the US. All the real estate agents have them here too. It's pretty novel so I get why people like it.

      • It's pretty luxourious compared to what I have now tbf (2013 Mazda 3) - I wasn't in a position to buy much better at the time as my home loan was only a few years old, but I get what you mean. I don't think they're bad cars or anything, just that they're beginning to become a bit meh now.

  • I thought accountants bought Volvo's so the Polestar 2 would be the logical choice.

  • +7

Look honey, I got you a $60k novated lease. The real surprise is the balloon payment at the end. <3

    • Yes that is a "balloon payment" in my pocket .. but it doesn't mean I don't like you!

… oh wait … the balloon is in your pocket ….

      … I didn't sign up for this …

New topic tomorrow: I'm going to surprise my husband with a "balloon repayment" - which will be regularly pegged to his outgoings … how should I approach it….

      • which will be regularly pegged to his outgoings

I'm sure he likes getting his outgoings pegged… regularly.

    • +1

From what I was quoted, most people are doing 2 years novated, and the balloon is about 35k or a bit.

Then just flipping. Although i wonder how sustainable the flipping would be…

  • Using summon bring the car infront of her

    • Imagine it just speeds off…

      • I heard it's smart enough to sopt if there is obstacle as per seen videos

  • +10

Update. OP is now divorced, but his ex-wife still gets to pay half the installments while he drives the Tesla around, because he co leased the car. You lose some you win some.

  • -1

Park the 3 close to the restaurant you're taking her out for dinner to. Uber it from home or her work to the restaurant, have a nice dinner, when it's time to go home instead of taking an Uber surprise her with an "I have a better idea" and let her drive home in her new car.

  • +3

What a fake, in one thread our friend said his wife picked the colour, so how can it be a surprise if she picked the colour ?

Just a try hard trying to show off.

  • Does your model have the insanity mode?

Can you just blind fold her, tell her to come in to this uber car, and you are taking her somewhere, then find a long empty stretch of road and do insanity mode.

  • Park it up the street. When you get home, ask her if that's the type of Tesla she likes. Then walk up to it to look in the window to see what it's like inside then unlock the passenger door get in and tell her to get in the drivers seat.

  • +1

Netflix and chill! Inside the Tesla.

  • what a completely lame thread.

You bought her a car she knows she was going to get. /end

  • -1

Both are high maintenance 😅 needs lot of charging

    • Depending if it's earning money or not

  • OP: SURPRISE! I bought you a Tesla!
Wife: Oh cool! I wonder what car you'll buy me when it comes time to replace it. Something luxurious I hope!

  • Weird flex?

Just trying to figure out what the best way to give it to her is

Did you hear about the woman who went into a bar and asked the bartender for a double entendre?

    He gave her one

  • +1

Is there a way to make the poster replies bold in each forum topic? I have to search for the original OP and it's quite hard to see their replies.

Most of them are people chatting politics or random stuff not related lol

    • +1

They have a light grey background instead of white for me. I don't think that I did anything to enable this. It is quite subtle, maybe too subtle.

There is also a skip to original poster facility in the "…" menu at the bottom of the screen.

      • Thank you
That must just be on the PC browser. Nothing on my phone

        • I'm using Chrome on an Android phone. The difference is quite subtle. My own posts have an obvious yellow/brown/orange background.

  • Gosh hope she didn’t want a different model! Most women want SUV’s!

  • Have you asked chatgpt ?

  • -1

I ordered a 2023 Red with 19 inch sports rims Model 3 a few days ago how long will it take to get it? it was a custom order.

  • take a day off for the delivery? do people not have annual leave?
