Welcome to the ultimate guide of Netflix subscriptions

Similar to my last post, I'm resharing this guide after previous deal post expired due to a price increase by Netflix. This is the third price hike for Turkey in the last 10 months.

  • Turkey is no longer the cheapest country for a Netflix subscription on all tiers, after they increased prices multiple times (Example: Premium plan from TL₺54.99 to TL₺77.99 to TL₺93.99 to TL₺130.99 in a span of just over a year).
    • However, obtaining a Turkey-based Netflix Gift Card is extremnely easy and effortless, making it the easiest-cheapest country to sign up with
  • Pakistan is the cheapest country for all Netflix plans, however, obtaining a Pakistan-based Netflix Gift Card to sign up will be quite difficult I believe
  • Netflix Argentina is now ARS699 (A$5.30) for the Basic Plan and ARS1,899 (A$14.40) for the Premium Plan

Please note: Signing up via Part 3 may be the easier method as most OzBargainers previous had lots of issues with Part 2, due to Netflix Turkey requesting a Turkish mobile number

There are plenty of previous threads on users commenting their experience. Please read it if you are stuck. See here and here and here and here

Instructions

Please read the following instructions carefully.

Part 1 - Ensure you have your Australian mobile number and debit/credit card saved in your account

Complete either steps (a) or (b), depending on your current situation

a. If you currently have an Australian Netflix subscription:

  1. Make sure your Australian mobile number is saved and verified in your account. See this screenshot

  2. Make sure your current or new debit/credit card is saved and verified in your account. If your payment method is PayPal, remove this immediately and replace it will a debit/credit card.

  3. Once you’ve triple checked your mobile is added and verified, simply cancel your subscription and wait until the end of the renewal period (i.e. keep watching until the sub expires. Don’t let your sub go to waste since you’ve already paid for it). Once your subscription has expired, go to Part 2 or Part 3

b. If you DO NOT have a current Australian subscription:

  1. Sign up and subscribe to any Australian Netflix plan (preferably the lowest cost basic plan - don’t worry, you’ll get your money back). Do not use PayPal to sign up, it must be a debit/credit card.

  2. Once you’ve signed up, make sure your Australian mobile number is saved and verified in your account. See this screenshot

  3. Make sure your current or new debit/credit card is saved and verified in your account.

  4. Once you’ve triple checked your mobile is added and verified, go to Netflix Live Chat and tell them you “would like a full refund since you’ve changed your mind” - they usually don’t ask why but if they do make up some random excuse like “my sibling just signed up” or “you don’t want it anymore” etc. This should be a very fast step and take you only several minutes. The account cancellation will be effective immediately and the refund will arrive in a few hours or days

  5. Once your subscription has expired (should be immediate as you’ve cancelled it for a refund through live chat), go to Part 2 or Part 3

Part 2 - Signing up via Netflix Turkey (Direct Method - No Gift Cards - MOST LIKELY TO FAIL)

Please ensure your subscription has completely ended/expired before starting Part 2. It has completely ended when you can no longer watch anything and Netflix asks you to resubscribe or restart your membership

  1. With VPN off, log into your Netflix account

  2. Activate a VPN service, turn it on and set it to Turkey (Istanbul is the largest city). There’s many free VPN’s if you don’t have a subscription to one. Here's a few great VPNs that work:

    Nord VPN: https://nordvpn.com/
    Express VPN: https://www.expressvpn.com/
    PureVPN: https://www.purevpn.com/
    Windscribe VPN: https://www.windscribe.com/
    ExpressVPN: https://www.expressvpn.com/

Note: Use chrome browser plugins for these VPNs where possible

Possible Problem: You use Windscribe VPN and set it to Turkey, but it defaults to one of the cities of Turkey that is not Istanbul.
Possible Solution: You want it to land in Istanbul, Turkey, so keep turning off and on the VPN until it lands in Istanbul. Confirm it’s Istanbul by refreshing this page: https://whatismyipaddress.com/

  3. Open Netflix and proceed to Netflix to choose your plan:

    https://www.netflix.com/

  4. Proceed by adding your Australian credit/debit card as the backup payment method

Possibly working cards from: 28 Degrees, ANZ Rewards, Citibank Debit, Macquarie

Possible Problem: If it asks for a Turkish mobile number, you will have to find a working one so they can send you verification. AFAIK, there is no way bypassing this and you will need to sign up via Part 3

Part 3 - Signing up via Netflix Turkey (Using Gift Cards if Part 2 Fails) - EASIEST METHOD

Please ensure your subscription has completely ended/expired before starting Part 3. It has completely ended when you can no longer watch anything and Netflix asks you to resubscribe or restart your membership

  1. Purchase a Turkey Netflix Gift Card. If you are signing up to Netflix Premium, buy the 100 TL gift card. If signing up to Netflix Basic/Standard, buy the 75 TL gift card (just an idea, doesn’t matter what GC you get)

Note: Choose a reputable seller and make an account so you have a record of the purchases if anything goes wrong. I recommend Turgame (I've bought Turkey Apple GC's from there and they have fast delivery, they charge the same price as the gift card value and the payment gateway fee is very low) or g2a

  2. Once you’ve received your gift card, it’s time to redeem your gift card and sign up to Netflix Turkey at the same time. Make sure from Part 1 that you have not logged out. You must stay logged in to your Australian account. If you’ve logged out, please log back in now with VPN turned off (Logging into your Aus account with a VPN gives an error)

  3. Activate a VPN service, turn it on and set it to Turkey (Istanbul is the largest city). There’s many free VPN’s if you don’t have a subscription to one. Here's a few great VPNs that work:

    Nord VPN: https://nordvpn.com/
    Express VPN: https://www.expressvpn.com/
    PureVPN: https://www.purevpn.com/
    Windscribe VPN: https://www.windscribe.com/
    ExpressVPN: https://www.expressvpn.com/

Note: Use chrome browser plugins for these VPNs where possible

Possible Problem 1: If you use Windscribe VPN and set it to Turkey, sometimes it defaults to one of the cities of Turkey that is not Istanbul. You want it to land in Istanbul, Turkey, so keep turning off and on the VPN until it lands in Istanbul. Confirm it’s Istanbul by refreshing this page: https://whatismyipaddress.com/

  4. With VPN on, open a new tab and go to the following Netflix site to redeem your gift card and follow the prompts to subscribe to Netflix Turkey:

    https://www.netflix.com/tr-en/redeem

Possible Problem: On the plan selection page, the currency is not in Turkish Lira
Possible Solution: The problem is due to your VPN. Double check or change your VPN if needed

  5. Proceed by choosing your current saved Australian credit/debit card (shown on screen) as the backup payment method (if it doesn't let you choose then it's highly possible it's already saved in the account - in this case, press "skip this step" at the bottom), OR add a new card in (this may prompt you for a Turkey number verification however, hence Part 1 - see fix below)

Possible Problem: After entering your debit/credit card details, it asks for a Turkish mobile number
Possible Solution: Two causes for this. Cause (1): the problem is due to your VPN - Double check or change your VPN if needed, then go back to step 4. Cause (2): This is because you've entered a new debit/credit card. In this case, please click back on your browser and avoid entering a new card by pressing "skip this step" at the bottom. If this option does not appear, please restart Part 1 and ensure you save the card you wish to use as a backup payment.

Possible Problem: My debit/credit cards keep declining, and I'm unable to subscribe
Possible Solution: It's likely the problem is due to your VPN. Double check or change your VPN if needed and restart the whole process. However, if VPN is not the problem, you can continue to subscribe without a backup payment method (i.e. start your subscription with just the Gift Card you bought), and then afterwards you can contact live chat and tell them you need to update your payment method by asking them to send a payment form popup (this will allow you to add a credit/debit card and save it into the account). If the agent refuses or has no idea what you’re trying to say, end the chat and start a new one.

Note: You’ve just used your gift card to pay for the first month, as well as partially for the second month. For the second month, Netflix will deduct the remaining of the gift card, and the remaining balance will come out of the credit/debit card you’ve inputted, and from thereon each month Netflix will keep charging your bank at those rates (be aware many banks like Commonwealth Bank have a small international transaction fee but this is only a few cents extra. Suncorp and Latitude Platinum have no international fees). Besides this, you should be saving >$100 AUD each year at least ($200 saving annually for the premium plan)

  6. You’re done! Turn off your VPN and enjoy your subscription :)

FAQ

Q: Will I need to turn VPN on everytime I watch Netflix?
A: No! You no longer need to have VPN on every time you watch a show or movie. VPN is only required for sign up. After sign up, use Netflix without a VPN and you will have access to the Australian Netflix library.

Q: I want to watch a show/move from another region or country. Can I do this?
A: If you want to watch a show or movie that is region locked to another country, you can do so by setting your VPN on your phone, laptop or PC to that country to watch it. Yes, you will need a VPN for this

Q: I got charged a different rate compared to the prices on this post. What happened?
A: Due to foreign exchange rates constantly fluctuating, prices will differ by several cents each month

Q: I have an existing Netflix subscription, can I use the same email?
A: Definitely! See Part A

Q: My bank blocked my payment, what do I do?
A: Some banks block 1st attempt and then text to confirm it's you. Once you reply, 2nd attempt may work. If after several attempts it does not work, just go through the Gift Card method and avoid the pain

Q: How do I update to a new debit/credit card?
A: You can contact live chat and ask them to send a payment form popup (this will allow you to add a credit/debit card and save it into the account). If the agent refuses or has no idea what you’re trying to say, end the chat and start a new one.

Q: Is signing up to Netflix Turkey going to affect my Netflix library/catalogue?
A: After setting up this sub, you may or may not notice the Netflix catalogue may be weird with brand new shows, etc… It might not even change anything, but if it does change, your Netflix catalogue will adjust to what you’re watching and soon it will look like nothing ever happened

Q: GST/VAT and Tax related questions?

Argh help! "Your account can't be used in this location" error when clicking Play on any video now.
(Unless on a Turkey VPN. But I don't have VPN on my TV's)

I cancelled my existing account, renewed with the instructions, VPN, Turkey gift card and existing CC.

But now Netflix won't let me watch anything.
(on my phone, I can VPN to Turkey and watch content, but that's not half of it doesn't even exist in Turkey's system)

But this absolutely won't work on my TV's!

    Help! Any ideas?

  • +4

Doesn't work anymore - you now need a VPN running, to connect to turkey to watch anything. And you only get the content that Turkey Netflix has access to.

I cut over using these instructions, a turkey gift card, my existing account and credit card a backup, so it's all connected - but ONLY works when on a Turkey VPN (which means my smart TV's can't watch it anymore :()

My only hope is that a few days pass and it magically lets me use it without VPN

    • I just tested my account and had no issues.

Edit. Have been 'living' in Turkey for 4+ yrs if that makes any difference

    • +2

Yeah, same here. Only working when on Turkey VPN. Thankfully I am able to use NordVPN on my Android TV.

      • Are you able to watch shows and whatnot? I'm using PIA on my Android TV and I'm able to log in and browse the catalogue, but then when I go to watch something it says I'm using a VPN and won't work.

PIA works fine on my phone/tablet though funnily enough.

        • +1

Yep, able to watch shows. I regularly use it for BBC iPlayer as well.

          • @fatal3rror: Nice, I'll have to keep an eye out for another 90+% cashback for Nord.

            Cheers.

      • Out of the blue, working again. For now.

        • so failed for approx 7days?

        • Did you continue to use it with VPN during the lockout period?

          • +1

@cactusjuice: Yes, about 7 days. I continued to use it on TR and US VPN

            • @fatal3rror: Nord US VPN works fine with TR Netflix, even after the initial lockout?

            • @fatal3rror: Still working? Maybe I'll need to jump on with a VPN to watch stuff fairly regularly through the week and hopefully that'll just make it work.

    • GL.inet type of routers could help, they can set up vpn and your tv just uses wifi.

    • Just faced this issue aswell.

Only able to watch Turkey based Netflix through Turkey VPN.

  • +1

    shieeeeeee stopped working

    • managed to resolve itself somehow

      • How?

      • @blueside is it still working?

        • +1

yes its still working. i was only locked out for 24 hours when this happened.
I've been using gift cards the entire time and I suspect the lockout triggered when I had to top up the credit when my original amount ran out.

  • +2

I can see your concerns above @freo, @blueside, however I just tested it and it still works on BOTH multiple phones and my PC and I am still able to watch all videos, shows and movies - no VPN on whatsoever

Not sure what is going on for you two

    • Same here, my TR sub is still working without VPN.
Never used gift card to pay, but don't see why it would behave differently.

      • I used a gift card to pay, so no issue there.

    • +1

I'd say it's a new lockout, catching new people who cut over from Oz to Turkey and then connect to Oz again.

But not hitting existing subscribers (who may legitimately be travelling I guess)

I guess we'll see if anyone else tries to cutover, they'll report back if it fails

      • Next Day - still cant use it without VPN.

        • @freo is it working now?

          • @I Smell Pennies: No - Cannot be used in this location - unless connected to Turkey via VPN.

(my TVs don't have VPN so it's a no-go for me)

    • +1

      Same here
just tried cutting over. AU > TR

Followed the steps to a T. Bought the GCs, existing backup payment method. all went through but the error pops up when not connected to a VPN
"Your account can't be used in this location"

      • Argh!

I guess we have to use VPN forever - (and only get the content Turkey offers), or cut back to Australian prices (if possible!)

        • +2

or cut back to Australian prices (if possible!)

Definitely possible, just cancel your account, then re-sign up as per normal without a VPN or anything once your monthly cycle is up.

          • @mangobango: Only just signed up on the 4th of May with a 200tl GC. There will still be a GC credit on my account on the 4th June so it won't be completely used until the 4th of July before I can cut back to AU prices. Support clarified that they don't refund GC's and my only option was to wait till the 4th of July to restart AU.

      • +2

My bank card expired so I re-did the steps recently. Netflix Games still work but streaming doesn't, what a bummer.

    • Getting "Your account can't be used in this location" - Error S7111-5095 now :(
On Mac, iPhone and Apple TV

      • +2

Mine is back again today - in Australia with no VPN, etc

  • +1

Caught up in the new lockout

  • +1

I subscribed three weeks ago using gift card and worked so far. But i got the error today!

    • Same

  • +1

i gave up and cancelled my netflix 🤦

  • Getting same error acount cannot be used, after updating the expried CC…bummer

  • Signed up using Turgame GC on May 8th. Now locked out. "Your account can't be used in this location".

    What next?

    • Just got the same message

      • @Gradenko @McRazy101 Is it working now or still locked out?

  • Locked out as well :(

  • Oh no, locked out as well!

  • Yep also locked out now, looks like the party is over

  • Mine still working from browser and phone, but the desktop app isn't.
    Not using a VPN.
Been subbed for 4 years in Turkey. Only used VPN to sign up, then disabled to use Oz Netflix.

  • Locked out upon recharge OR locked out as in worked yesterday and suddenly fails today?
Also is it failing on Login Or on devices already logged in?

    • Locked out as in worked yesterday. Can still login fine just throws an error whenever you try to stream something

      • were any of your apps/devices already logged in that stopped working?
Just wondering if the issue is only happening with new logins OR occurs either way i.e. I better make sure not to log out of any.

        • +1

Yes, in one case someone was streaming most of the day only to encounter the error this afternoon on the same device

          • @evocable: Thanks. Good to know. All is currently well with mine……but doesn’t sound good now that several of you are reporting this.

  • just came home , ready to netflix and chill and here come the location error for me as well

  • +1

    Yep, mine locked out too.
I contacted support to see what i could do and they stuck to their guns firmly saying i needed to re-start my account from Australia. I said i was going back to Turkey in a few weeks so what does that mean? They said i would have to then re-setup my account in Turkey. So i asked what happens if i travel and they said that I will need to re-setup my account in my travel destination! I said that was nuts and seemed to negate the advice they have specifically about travel on their website which says you can easily travel with your account. They just kept ignoring that point and stuck to their guns. My guess is they are cracking down heavily on account sharing and account arbitrage but haven't worked out the finer details for those legitimately caught in the middle.

    • +1

Ahhh that's no good.. so vpn is the way to go moving forward then I assume

      • And if you don't have smart device with VPN, probably best combined with gl.inet or similar small router. (Makes your VPN transparent)

        • Just realised going the VPN route, we'd be locked to viewing only the turkish netflix content as well..

          • @cactusjuice: Yes, that's true. Might be worthwhile to check with vpn if you can travel from TR to US/UK.

            • @johnmelb: Aus credentials can't be used to log into Netflix USA…..last I tried. Was fine for Canada though.

              • @Borg: Well, just tried and can still watch via VPN to US Netflix (e.g NCIS, which I believe is not available in Australia/Turkey).
I just use same app which already has my TR credentials.
All I wanted to say is if Australia specifically is blocked from Turkish accounts, might help to check if VPN to US still works. That way you can at least access US content too.

                • @johnmelb: Yeah, I understood what you meant i.e. use via other places.

Interesting. I wonder why mine always fail to kog into certain countries yet fine in others. I must test again.

    • For what it's worth. I have NordVPN and it works perfectly still. I just have to make sure i connect it before starting Netflix.

      • With your location set to Turkey in Nord?

  • +1

RIP to this great hack or deal.

Trying to get a refund from Netflix for the month.
No refund so I just cancelled.

Looks like the cheap Netflix days are over..
Time for an account share I think

  • +2

I was locked out on the 9th with location error. Was planning to cancel, but lucky I didn't as it worked again on the 12th. Did not do anything for it to work again.

    • @vvaaa is it still working as of today?

  • Given US access is working, I wonder if this is time to restart using my lifetime Getflix subscription?

  • +1

Its cooked. Back to the high seas.

  • I've read some old posts online, that once the gift card period lapses, and they start charging the card, things tend to go back to normal.

    Can anyone confirm this behavior??

Also tried using a free VPN (windscribe and urban) to access Netflix US and Canada, and they both failed with the same location lockout error. Obviously Netflix Turkey works fine. Is this due to free VPN addresses being already flagged? Is anyone with the blocked Netflix account able to confirm that paid VPNs (e.g. Nord, PIA, Express etc.) works fine even with this lockout?

Pretty annoying this lockout, only switched over from AU -> TK a few weeks back :(

    • I've read the same thing. I'm going to leave it for a month and see what happens. It's not promising though when people who have been subbed for 4 years in Turkey are also getting locked out.

    • Wouldn't hold my breath, I'm paying via card and was locked out. Only 6 days into a month aswell…

      • call support and ask them why. You are on holiday here in Australia visiting your sister and it is not working :-)

        • I tried the whole holiday approach and they were adamant that you can only use it in your "home country". I said the Netflix website specifically talks about travelling and that it's ok. They just repeated their same point and wouldn't budge.

    • Can confirm location issues persists after charging non-giftcard

    • After a bit of digging around, apparently its a common thing for Netflix TK accounts to be under a 30 day region lock? So for new accounts like myself (AU -> TK), hoping it could start working from the end of this month.

Does anyone have any experience with this?

  • Trying to update my card (previous card cancelled) and having issues… reading the last comments on here it seems it’s not worth trying to get it working & will just need to suck it up and pay Aussie prices 😰

    • +1

Never suck it up. I feel like using the 'Turkey' sign up process is the same process the big companies use to avoid paying their fair share of taxes in the countries they make money in. We are just doing what they are doing :D
I will just cancel my subscription now.

      • +2

I actually switched to the Aussie $6.99 standard with ads plan…

We don’t watch it that much, and kids profiles don’t get ads… so now I’m paying less than I was previously via turkey… jokes on them I guess 😆

  • +2

    Just Supriseddddddddddd,
my Turkish NETFLIX back to ON AGAINNNNNNNNNNNNNN.. yeyy

    • You forgot to mention while travelling in AU :-)

      • +1

Oh yeah. While traveling to my backyard lol

  • Mine still works perfectly fine without VPN, and so with several others here. Is anyone still having issues?

    • Are you currently running on a gift card balance or is your CC debited monthly? I am still ok (no regional issues) - but I still have a gift card balance still left. So I am wondering if the transition to CC or CC transaction that triggers it.

      • I was on gift card credit but now CC debited monthly. My most recent charge was today actually. $9.98 to the bank. Netflix still works as usual

        • My netflix still works too. I've been using tr gift cards as my existing credit card got compromised, and couldn't update credit card (even using tv option). mine is due for renewal next week. can someone please confirm whether tr gift cards still work for renewal?

          • +1

@vdf: Gift card (tr) worked for restarting my membership a few days ago. I'm still on location lockout, hopefully that's lifted soon.

            • +1

@meerkaty: Just redeemed tr gift card (purchased from turgame) successfully. I turned on winscribe before redeeming. It didn't work the first time (invalid code), but worked second time (after turning windscribe off and on again). I'm not on location lockout (hopefully it stays that way).

  • +1

I just transferred from AU to TR on a test account. On lockout with the same error:

"Your account can't be used in this location" - Error S7111-5095

I'll update on when this lockout period is over

    • Whoa. Does that mean they've cracked down on expired accounts resigning up to other countries?

      • Not sure.

      • That triggered the location lockout for me too.

    • Lockout period was 29 days. Videos play in Australia now.

  • Will the crackdown on password sharing affect those of us with Turkey subscription?

    • There is no date as to when it will

      • How are they going to monitor account sharing by ip address?
Mobile users will use the cellular and I would think the ip will change.

        • +1

          Perhaps by device id?
