7-11 fuel lock dilemma. What would you do?

So, for some reason, my fuel lock did not work today. Clerk was surprised as they checked my phone and advised me to contact head office for refund.
I obviously borrowed a chopper and travelled interstate to lock this price.
I would have let this slide but their pump price was 19c more expensive than all the other servos around including BP and shell!
I am just wondering if you would contact them in this case. What is the worst that could happen? Disable my account and I just make another one?
I filled 46L at 30c more than the locked price so about $14 saving.
I am also wondering if they stopped turning a blind eye on this thing and want me to contact them so they can tell me off.
I might start locking the best price in my state only!

What is the worst that could happen?

    Literally nothing

Is this hassle and time and effort worth $14 for you?

If yes, send them a message. If not, move on with life.

    • I mainly want to know if it is just a one off or they are now onto me!

      • I filled up yesterday and was told the app wasn't working. my fuel lock was only 2 cents cheaper so I'm not worried. I don't think they are onto you.

      • Attempt to lock in again and of the same thing happens, they may be onto you. If not, then they're probably not.

Either way, going to be much faster than the opinions of OzB punters.

      • Damn this sounds really serious.

Have you noticed any strange cars parked outside your house?

        • Yeah actually.. he parks directly outside my bedroom window and blocks the view. He then proceeds to walk into my neighbour’s house. I think she might be in on it.

    Probably.

    • I love 7-Eleven's reply there: "we use a specialist third party provider to verify customer details."

What a load of bollocks! The accounts are not ID verified.
All they are really doing in analysing the GPS logs from the app.

      • They never said "ID verified"?

Quick look at their T+Cs reveal they use Adyen as their payment processor, which also has a Risk Management option, so my guess is they are referring to that. Don't see why they would lie in writing to a customer about using a specialist third party provider.

Have only heard people using Choppers that contact head office ONLY GET THEIR ACCOUNT BANNED. instead of head office helping (seems like an easy way for them to dishonour their price lock- even in legitimate cases)

I have had the locked price not show up when i open the app until about 10 seconds later.

Personally if I had the offer there and their system wouldn’t read it, I’d only offer to pay the discounted price. I guess u learn for next time.

    • +1

I didn’t think they could manually change the price and I am not the type that like to cause a scene when especially when other people are waiting behind me in a queue.

      • Thats their problem not yours.
Years ago the local caltex wouldn’t accept e gift cards even though I called up woolies and they said that location accepts it and their website also said so. I came prepared to the petrol station with a printout of the egift card and when they refused it I handed them a copy of it and said work it out and walked out, the guys chased me to my car and said we’ll call the police, i said go for it.
Nothing happened and they never charged the gift card. A few months later woolies changed their website to exclude that location haha.

Why be a'hole to the local Caltex store assistant?

The guy that owns the store is most likely a franchise store owner and that comes out from own pocket if his EFTPOS doesn't work.

It's not like you can't use it elsewhere and you knew very well they may not accept it.

Did a similar thing using entertainment book discount and good food gift card. The restaurant owner refused to use them both and told me it’s against the T&C’s, I asked him to show me, he spent five minutes googling and said he can’t find it. I said either charge me the discounted rate or I’m walking out, its up to you. Its funny how they drop their bullshit when they see you as a risk of not paying.

Well done. You really showed that small business owner.

At the risk of getting my ozbargain membership torn up, id say suck it up.

I am well, and truly ahead from choppering, so 1 where I pay full price isn't going to be a deal breaker for me.
at some point, they will ban everyone for choppering. There will be a lot of outrage here, but for me, it will be fun while it lasted.

If I were them, I would load up a fake shop in the DB somewhere in the middle of the ocean. Then watch us all chopper to it and get banned.

Don't draw attention to yourself when you're cheating the system. The squeaky wheel needs to stop moving when the repair man is looking at it because it's going into the trash if it's caught.

You won't get the savings refunded and your account will get disabled. Is that worth your time?

$14 is the price of 2 premium beers from the bottle shop, which is what I would have rather drunk rather than spending time typing out your post.
    Ridiculous

$14 is the price of 2 premium beers

It's OzB - only talk in terms of the cheapest beers please.

    • +1

Why didn’t you go drink those two premium beers instead of reply to my my post?

I always have this fear when I'm cashing in my fuel lock.

  • Contact them.

If they ban your account, just create a new one.

  • You do wonder how they distinguish between choppers and someone legitimately locking in a low price whilst on interstate travel.

    • +2

The chopper is much faster than any jet aeroplane.

I emailed head office when there was maintenance on the app and I had a fuel lock that I took the chopper to WA for, when based in VIC. No questions asked, they sent me $26 in a gift card with no expiry date. Worth a go imo, as long as you have a receipt

    • This - and if they ban you, create a new one!

      • +2

Just make sure you unlink velocity before contacting them in case your account gets banned.

  • +1

I had the same thing happen for a difference of about $90 (very good fuel lock I'd gotten via a chopper) and emailed head office and was given a voucher without question.

  • -3

I had the same thing happen and they owed me $42. Head Office refused the $42 refund unless I worked in their store for a day, which I did.

It was easy, I just had to fill drinks and stock from the bck into the fridges, re-stock the ice creams sweep the outside area.

I also got to eat the unsold Krispy Kreme donuts.

  • +1

Sort of offtopic, but I thought everyone kept their chopper in state. Have most people had no issues flying to WA while based in Vic?

    • +1

Never had an issue with the cheapest nationawide besides a weird look or two and a few compliments on the savings. Besides that, they can’t be bothered to say anything.
But i always remember where the lock is from and I don’t use it on the same day. In case they ask, I would just say I was there yesterday or whenever.

    • +2

I personally give it a few days between lock and use (if it is out of state) to build in some deniability. I'm less worried about the counter staff than the analysts who might one day think to check the timing/location between the lock and the use.
