It's been just over 12 months since I've shared a Comfast USB WiFi Adapter deal and this time the V4 model is on sale instead of the usual V2. The main difference is that it now uses a Realtek RTL8188FTV WiFi chipset instead of the MediaTek MT7601 chipset.

If you buy two you'll get an additional 2% off and it's affiliated so you can stack with 20% cashback at Cashrewards

I personally have a stockpile of these as a backup at work for when I need a temporary WiFi connection and they work really well, despite only being 150mbps 2.4GHz.

  • I've got an older samsung smart tv without wifi adapter, would this work, or do I have to use the specific adapter mentioned in the manual?

You must use the “Samsung Wireless LAN adapter” (WIS09ABGN, WIS09ABGN2, WIS10ABGN) to use a wireless network

    • +1

It says must but also it's >$3 to try

    • +3

i would assume since a smart tv runs a custom OS that it wont have drivers for this device.

    • +3

I would use a powerline adapter instead

    • I guess it depends on if the same chip/module is used?

    • Looks like they use Ralink chipsets, though could also be Realtek apparently. Good chance it won't work, but it's 3 bucks and a bit of time to lose I guess.

(I'll take the risk of getting neg-ed.)

2.4 Ghz in this day and age?

    • +8

2.4GHz still has it's benefits. Also less than $3.

      • +1

There is no way I am going to argue about the price.

Horse-for-courses (me guess) for 2.4 Ghz.

      • What could you plug them into that doesnt already have wifi ???

        • +8

          A desktop without wifi?

    • +6

I’m pretty confident to say over half of the Wi-Fi users won’t notice any difference between 2.4 or 5ghz. ;)
Maybe 5ghz has worse coverage alone lol.

      • I’m pretty confident to say over half the statistics on ozb are made up on the spot

It's fine for basic usage. Good for a spare PC or laptop that doesn't have WiFi. It's 3 bucks

  • I personally have a stockpile of these as a backup

Still have a few kicking around from the Gearbest 99c deal days. Had to dig em out to use one this week actually.

    • Good days, got so much stuff from those deals

    • Why would you have a stack of these, are they rubbish quality and dont last?

  • Cheers OP, combined it with the cashrewards 20% cashback.

    Comfast? Sounds like me

    • +3

      That’s what she said?

  • MT7601 is supported in Raspberry Pi OS and Armbian kernel for a while. On the other hand Realtek pushes a new model of RTL8188 chipset with a different suffix almost every year which requires a new driver. That sucks.

I picked up one of the v2's a while back as a backup and didn't need to use it till I moved and my desktop wasn't within ethernet reach.

Works pretty well, maxes out my 50 Mbit connection when the router is in the same room, but speed halves in the next room (not solid walls), probably due to the small internal antenna.

Very handy to have a few of these around.
Used it to troubleshoot laptop wifi card issues.
Has always worked out of the box across win10/11
