It's been a long time since I've shared these previously popular USB wireless adapters. They've got me out of many sticky situations before where dodgy TP-Link adapters couldn't get speeds any faster than 10Mbps and more recently a switch failure resulting in a few computers needing WiFi temporarily until it could be replaced.

This 2.4GHz USB adapter uses the MT7601 chipset, has a 2dBi inbuilt antenna and supports Android TV boxes. Limited to 2pcs per customer.

Thanks Clear, will get another one for my old man. Hopefully it comes fast.

    • +12

      That’s what she said

      • +1

        You sure?

        • +2

I guess sometimes you want a quick download

    • +1

Sadly it will only come at wireless-n speeds.

Welcome to 2002, where this is considered a 'popular USB wireless adaptor'.

      • Yeah no 5g wireless

Ps nothing wrong with the speeds on my TP-Link AC600 Dual Band Wireless Nano USB Adapter, $26 vs $3 I guess.

  • +2

I don't think I need any help in this department.

    • So you’re saying you already have impressive bandwidth

      • And supports Android TV.

  • +2

I feel the need to get this but don't know what i would use it for…

    • +9

At these prices it’s a USB port protector

    • You're already on the internet, so put that mouse away now.

  • With a lot of interference with 2.4ghz I would personally get one with 5ghz

    • Not recommended to be used next to a microwave.

    • +2

Any recommendation for a 5ghz adaptor?

      • See my post above

      • I just got a generic dual band dongle from eBay (was ~$8 from Oz seller) and worked flawlessly. I did have the one in this post and it worked fine generally but the wifi was flaky for connecting my TV to the network even though I don't have that many neighbouring access points on the same channel. I'd be cautious if you live in an apartment and definitely get 5ghz. When I lived in an apartment, the WiFi speed was up and down and lots of drop outs with 2.4ghz as neighbours wifi on same or adjacent channel

      • These (CF-811AC) are alright if you really need 5GHz, just keep in mind that it's USB2.0 so you'll be limited by 300Mb/sec of USB port bandwidth

        https://www.aliexpress.com/item/32999133595.html

Avoid noname generic stuff, they're prone to overheating and stopping working in about a year or so.

        • Is comfast a 'name' brand
Agree though, waste of money getting the absolute cheapest ones

  • hmmm…. the name of the product sounds really interesting…

    • +2

The name is not important. You stick it in, and it comes to life. As the OP has said

They've got me out of many sticky situations

  • +2

Last time I ordered one of these I got an iphone cover.

    • Wow nice bonus.

    • +1

Then don't order this now, order an iPhone cover.

      • +1

Order a screen protector and you may get an iPhone instead.

  • How fast are these actually? I've always seen terms like 150, 300 and 600 thrown around but never got any of those to a local device.

    • Well, it's slower then the NBN - and that's saying something.

    • I don't have this exact device but I got probably something very similar… It's kinda bad for what it is. I've been using tethered phones instead of a wifi dongle most of the time and they easily get 3-4 bars through a single wall. In comparison I struggle to get it above 60% signal strength on these doodads.

Netsh is saying I'm getting anywhere from 60-90 Mbps connection through a single stud wall and only 0.5m away. I'll have to give popping the cover off though. There's a YouTube video of someone claiming taking the metal and plastic shielding helped his a lot.

    • +2

It's a bit deceptive, 600mbps is 150mbps for 2.4ghz + 433mbps for 5ghz (which actually equals 583). Real world is no where near those speeds

    • Keep in mind that those marketing numbers are in Megabits/s (Mbps) not megabytes/s (MBps). A byte is 8 bits, so 150 Mbps is 18.75 MBps, or about USB 2.0 speed.

And of course in the real world you'll likely get less than the advertised max.

  • limit has changed to…… 1 per customer

  • Thanks clear, grabbed one, the old one had started dropping out occasionally.

  • Thanks. Mine check out at $2.59.

  • 5g would be better, but cost a lot more.
if anything it will protect your usb port, lol

    • +2

$10.77 delivered for the 5G one. Doesn't quite break the bank but it is 3 times more expensive

      https://www.aliexpress.com/item/32999133595.html

      • I bought one last year and it's good enough, what was surprising is that it was delivered in less than a week.

      • I'm getting $11.92 after GST

  • Do these work with Raspberry Pi? If anyone has tried them

    • Depends on OS you plan to use, MT7601 is supported on OpenWRT and UbuntuCore but only in Client mode, no AP.

    • Doesn't the RPi4 have built in wireless? Just using ethernet but can't recall. USB ports are pretty precious on those :P.

      • I was just wondering what wireless chips these use cause my non-wireless pi zero and pi 2 only work with certain wireless dongles which use require less power.

But it does seem to work for some:

        https://forums.raspberrypi.com/viewtopic.php?t=263617

        • Yeah all good, only just built a pi4 late last year as a music streamer and blown away. Power use is critical, so went with a SSD 2.5" for that reason

    • The MT7601 is supported by Linux.

Got mine yesterday, it's the V3 and has the RTL8188 chipset. Not working on Linux.

  • Mine came up at 7Cents?

    • +1

      New user coupon

      • Makes sense! cheers

  • I bought one of these…it was terrible, constantly disconnecting. Had to do windows diagnostics, would work for a few minutes and then die. The drivers were had to come by. Its really just ewaste.

    • Probably interference

  • -1

Would this work on a Synology Nas?

  • Estimated delivery on 12th Mar 2022.. quarter year waiting !!

    • +1

That's 2 months away. Considering it's a small envelope from China that seems reasonable. Though most of my orders are arriving in 2-4 weeks.

  • +1

Got mine, it's the V3 and has the RTL8188 chipset. Not working on Linux.

    • Classic Linux. Just google the chipset and Linux for solutions. Perhaps this?

      • Linked driver only supports PCIe, in tree driver on F35 (5.15) has issue with the eeprom on the dongle.
