The Mac Studio is on sale via Digidirect, and I noticed when adding this one to cart they were bundling in a free Dell monitor (which they sell for $609 separately), which I think actually makes it a good deal. I haven't seen the deal advertised but the monitor adds to cart when you add the Mac.

    What a bargain /s

    • Perhaps submit your own better deal if you don't find this one sufficient?

      • +6

Apple AOC has the same Mac Ultra for $5,269 + 559 (for the monitor ) = $5,828. so this would only be $37.75 lower. not a bargain IMO.

        • +1

That assumes you're eligible for education pricing, or at the very least, fly under Apple's radar.

        • Potential cashback of $162 with Casrewards.

  • +2

Make sure you check stock to avoid disappoint. digidirect has a reputation.

  • +1

This is a great deal IF AND ONLY IF they have stock

    • It seems like they have stock to pickup in one store and so likely there will be be stock for whoever the one person who buys this is 😄

  • People worried the M2 Mac Mini is going to beat it?

    • +1

It will in terms of CPU, but the Studio still has a decent GPU lead.

  • +4

It will be much cheaper if you get 10% off Apple GC like this one, it seems to appear at Wollie/Coles regularly, and purchase it from the Apple Edu store, which doesn't seem to have restrictions to purchase.

  • +1

MacOS isn’t great on 1440p monitors anymore, it really needs 4K or above. Given that, and the monitor is frankly pretty crap if you’re the sort of person looking to use a Studio for it’s intended purposes, I’d give this a miss.

    • +1

MacOS isn’t great on 1440p monitors anymore, it really needs 4K or above.

That's a very personal opinion to say out loud.

      • Does it not have to do with res independence being deprecated since Big Sur?

      • +1

Hardly. Since the removal of sub pixel antialiasing the complaints from people on 1440p or below monitors are everywhere. Just do a Google search for 'Mac sub pixel antialiasing' and you'll get scores of Reddit, Stack exchange and Apple Discussion threads about the issue and the impact that it has.

I get why gamers stick to it, but the Mac Studio is aimed at programmers, photographers, videographers and graphic designers - all of whom should be looking at 4K as a minimum, especially with new 5K, 6K and probably 8K displays on the way.

        • also for musicians, for whom the display would be fine. also fine for use as a secondary display. correct tho - I wouldn't use it as a primary display for visuals

    • vouch, I'm a normie with 1440p monitor and had to use an external program to properly config it

  • can it run win10 ?

    • +1

Possibly using VM and ARM version of 11 so maybe a yes

    • +2

Using Parallels Desktop 18 + Win 11 ARM, pretty happy so far!

      • I'm very interested in this combo. How long have you been running it? Any niggles?

        • +2

Probably for 6+ months? Haven't found a single software that doesn't work on it so far so I'm happy. I'd say get a trial license from Parallels and see whether your Windows apps will run nicely.

FYI I'm running PD 18 on M1 MacBook Air with 16GB RAM and 512GB Storage. Mostly a smooth experience. More RAM helps but its also getting expensive if you want 24GB/32GB of RAM from Apple.

Parallels Desktop does get update quite often as well. Here's their changelog: https://kb.parallels.com/en/129060

If you want to DIY and happy to spend time on this rather than money then check out UTM: https://mac.getutm.app/'

"UTM employs Apple's Hypervisor virtualization framework to run ARM64 operating systems on Apple Silicon at near native speeds. On Intel Macs, x86/x64 operating system can be virtualized. In addition, lower performance emulation is available to run x86/x64 on Apple Silicon as well as ARM64 on Intel. For developers and enthusiasts, there are dozens of other emulated processors as well including: ARM32, MIPS, PPC, and RISC-V. Your Mac can now truly run anything."

FYI you don't have to pay for the Win 11 ARM at the moment thanks to the Qualcomm & Microsoft deal (ending soon): https://www.theverge.com/2021/11/23/22798231/microsoft-qualc…

          • @davidtse916: Im running the Windows 11 ARM Insider Preview, still free. Reckon they'll pull it from being free at all?

            • +2

@UberIsCool: I'd say Microsoft will introduce ARM version of Win 11 properly when more ARM CPUs starts to appear on Windows laptops (which makes more sense for battery life etc.). I don't see this happening anytime soon so enjoy your free Win 11 ARM :p

  • damn people are rich!

Would you pay this amount for a car to get you to work? If so, why not tools that are necessary for your profession?

      • +2

Unless it is really for work, it is a really expensive toy.

        • +1

To some, perhaps, but even spending this amount of money on a hobbie is reasonable in my opinion.

          • +1

@magic8ballgag: This particular model? M1 Ultra? It doesn't really provide the performance boost scaling across all apps. Performance and features, M1 Ultra is a bit unbalanced. Do you have 10Gbps LAN setup at home? Due to the timing, HDMI 2.1 and WiFi6E did not make it. Thunderbolt 4 is still PCIe gen 3 x4, so really, as much as M1 Ultra is quite powerful, you only get 1 PCIe gen 4 x4 (from the internal SSD). The rest are just a bunch of PCIe gen 3 based ports.

It makes sense if you are in deep Apple ecosystem and can really benefit from the ProRes hardware encoding / decoding OR your job provides IT budget each year which you have to use up.

            • -1

@netsurfer: I was more referring to spending that amount of money on anything, as it as it provides value to your profession/personal life, why not?

              • +1

@magic8ballgag: That feels like bending the context. Since this is about an M1 Ultra deal, saying there are some gadgets worth spending this much seems like an excuse that's a bit too convenient.

With Apple's announcement, there will most likely be a sale on M1 Ultra. U2722DE monitor to pair with M1 Ultra Mac Studio, does that really make sense?

                • @netsurfer: I strongly believe they would make the same comment about most items that cost the same/similar amount.

My point is there seems to be a large percentage of members on this site that just don't see value in spending more than the bare minimum on anything.

                  • +2

@magic8ballgag: Nah, most people feel that a lot of OZB deals now more about deals which are available now, rather than just bargain deals.

We know the M2 refresh is pretty much in full swing now. Is it really a good time to buy M1 Ultra Mac Studio? Anyone who has a deep pocket or company funding IT gears would have got one by now. We are seeing M2 Pro and M2 Max lineup addressing some of the gripes people have about M1 Pro, Max. Surely M2 Ultra will get those as well. The point is M1 Ultra Mac Studio really needs to drop in price now. The best proof is that even you won't + vote this deal.

Also, digiDirect… given what happened recently and have you actually purchased items from them online?

      • Ok computers are a lot easier to compare than other highly subjective value propositions (especially considering "hobbies")

This mac is triple (3x) the price of the below - are you really getting 3x the performance (or close to)?

        • I don't know, but if macOS is a requirement, that PC isn't even an option.

          • +1

@magic8ballgag: people have been making bootleg macs for ages now. Granted most Mac users are the kind that will happily pay triple not to bother with that hassle, and it is a bit of a hassle.

            • @Budju: Ok, so it's an option, but not really.

              • @magic8ballgag: I think some people do it successfully. I experimented with a Dell Optiplex 9020 and managed to install MacOS, but then just hated using the thing so it was just a fun experiment that took me a while to figure out.

If someone was building a system from scratch there would be guides out there that make the process relatively simple provided you buy the recommended hardware.

Right now hackintosh is still probably a good option, but I can see that there will come a time when only ARM CPUs will be compatible with contemporary MacOS (maybe 3-5 years).

  • it's like 800 cheaper a bit better than student discount
