  • Kinda glad the XAV-9500ES isnt on sale there. Just purchased one recently, but need to wait for a fascia for my car before i can get it put in (VE Commodore, gonna use the latest alpine perfect fit setup, but wanted the Sony ES headunit over the 9" Alpine halo)

  • got this for $530 a couple months ago after combining with spend $500 get $100 cashback AMEX offer.
For those who have an AMEX card the Sony store comes around roughly every quarter.
Very happy with the purchase. Sound quality is a marked improvement. Have had the occasional drop-out (can reconnect within 1-2mins) but am yet to update to latest OS so hoping that it clears it.

my experience with a Pioneer wireless AA/Carplay unit is that toll gates or carparks with sensors will kill the connection. and heavy RF interference will cause a cut out, if its a long enough cut out it'll drop.

sound quality is better for carplay at least because its capable of CD quality audio, which even when you are playing spotify, is a marked improvement. comparing spotify via carplay vs bluetooth is night and day to me. might have something to do with the fact that spotify is ogg and my head unit has to transcode that to a BT codec, however.

      • haven't been through many multi-storey car parks but have done approx. 2500km of driving over the last 3 weeks and its dropped off randomly whilst on both country and city roads (again maybe only a total of about 5 times). Have gone through multiple toll booths and that hasn't killed it in my experience.
Will keep a look out for these though.

My wife's car has a Pioneer, which will sometimes drop out. At some locations, consistently so. I recently purchased a Motorola MA1, to turn my wired AA into wireless AA. It was utterly hopeless at first; after a few minutes, the screen would get increasingly laggy until the whole screen freezed, and AA would not recover. This only happened when the map is running while music is playing (common issue with wireless AA users). All the signs point at a lack of bandwidth, even if the 5GHz connection should be plenty. So I played in the AA Developer's settings, and changed the audio codec from "PCM preferred" to "AAC-LC preferred" to reduce the amount of bandwidth it needs to stream music; so far, zero issues.

PCM is uncompressed/lossless, but takes up a lot of bandwidth. AAC-LC is compressed, but assuming the bitrate is high, you may not hear the difference (it sounds good to me, and I'm pretty good at hearing the differences in bitrates). So if you have dropouts, try doing what I did and see if it still happens.

      • Thanks will give it a go if it becomes an ongoing issue

  • How much would they charge to install it?

      $1,000,000

          would estimate around $250.
          Material costs are about $100-$150

@JDMcarfan: More like $200 for materials in my case, including things like steering harness, fascia kit, etc.

            • @Make it so: Agree. Could be $700 worst case haha

            • @Make it so: Yep agreed. Ended checking receipt and forgot the steering wheel harness that made it 189 for me (that’s excluding a reverse cam) so likely around $250 for the average car material.
Take this with a grain of salt though as wiring looms and fascia are different for every car and can be priced wildly different

It depends entirely on how much stuff you need to buy to fit it to your particular car.
It's definately going to be significantly more than $100.

@Mahip: You will need the following:
              1. Secondary Harnesses + Patch Lead: App9 secondary iso harness & swc patch lead to suit sony av headunits 16 pin connector (APP9SP5)
              2.Facia to suit Kia (FP8118)
              3. Vehicle Specific Steering Wheel Control Interfaces: Steering wheel control interface to suit Kia - various models non amplified (CHKI7C)
              4. Aftermarket Headunit Antenna Adapter: Headunit antenna adapter (APA47)
              5. You can get the USB ports if you want to keep your original USB slots otherwise, you can wire the Sony USB cable and use that. if they still include it in the Sony kit. Mine is wired through centre console and i use it to plug and charge my phone.

              1. For reverse camera, I use this https://www.supercheapauto.com.au/p/sca-sca-sca-rc2-replacem…
You will need to connect this to your rear reverse light, so when you change to reverse it will activate the camera. Pretty easy.

Price for camera is quite high and i think i bought way cheaper a few years ago.

              • @Vancomycin 1000mg: Thanks mate for your response. I have ordered everything you mentioned through eBay. I’m concerned about the steps and what parts goes to where.

                • @Mahip: Its fine, trust me when i did mine it was scary. It took me 3 days to finally sort out which ones goes where. I was getting weird sounds through speakers and then i finally figured out.
