Rex is a full service (checked luggage, carry on luggage, refreshments) airline, flying mostly 737-800NGs on these one way routes (Ex Virgin planes).

They're running a promo where their midweek fares are less, so I've gone through some 2023 dates to find the cheapest flights on all their routes. Hopefully it helps someone!

On some of the dates, Jetstar or Virgin may show up cheaper if applicable (eg $40 on way on some of the routes with Jetstar), but Rex does include checked luggage and refreshments, while Jetstar and usually Virgin now charge for checked luggage (on their Lite fares). All include carry-on luggage.

For a full hyperlinked list of routes, dates and prices, see the original post here

There are hotels on sale as well, don't forget to book yours.

These exact same can be found on Skyscanner / Google flights

Was cheaper earlier back in December to prebook for most flights they gone up about $7 each

    • +2

      As well go to
      Momondo.com.au

  • bloody hell

  • +1

Anything for Syd-ADL and back OP?

  • +2

Not the full service i normally get but cool

    • +3

      They have a Lavatory

  • +10

One kicker with Rex for multi-city bookings is that you're on the hook for all transit/hotel costs if your flight is delayed, diverted or cancelled (even if both flights are with Rex). Was stung by this coming through Sydney recently.

    https://www.rex.com.au/FlightInfo/disruptions_faq.aspx

    • +1

I appreciate this information, I'd definitely rather travel with an airline that has your back.

The Conditions of Carriage excludes all compensation for consequential damages arising from disruptions.

      Is this even legal?

The guarantee that services are provided within a reasonable time is especially relevant to flights. When a flight is delayed or cancelled, it may mean this guarantee has not been met […]
If that replacement flight is not within a reasonable time, the airline must give the consumer their choice of a different replacement flight or refund. If the consumer had to book a flight with another airline because the first airline had no reasonable replacement flights, they may have a right to reimbursement from the original airline for the cost of that flight.
      https://www.accc.gov.au/consumers/consumer-products-and-acti…

So if a business fails to meet a consumer guarantee, they must pay for loss or damage which is "reasonably forseeable".
IANAL, and whether that applies to circumstances outside of the airlines control, such as weather, I'm not sure.

    • Virgin and Jetstar do not cover this either, there is absolutely no liability on their part for any delay, diversion or cancellation. Unsure about QF

      • +1

QF does but it can be a painful experience none the less

        • No they don't. A month ago, my other half had a 7.30pm flight from Syd. At 8.30 they & 5 other passengers got bumped and Qantas said "cya tomorrow at 9am". They said WTF? Had to find & stump up for their own accommodation, taxi's, etc Qantas said bad luck. Not interested in helping, let alone paying. This was for a organised two days before full price fare, not a discounted one.

          • +2

@M00Cow: I just don't understand how airlines have zero repercussions for crap like this. If you're paying for a service, you should get that service. Imagine if this happened in all industries - it would be chaos!!

          • +1

@M00Cow: It depends on what the reason is. If its weather related, there's very few airlines in the world that covers it, instead it's supposed to be on travel insurance side.

If its a fault with the plane or something else that's in the airline's control then its different and they're the ones that are responsible.

          • +1

@M00Cow: If it's their fault they do, due to a long delay recently they rescheduled me to the next morning and they put me up in a hotel, paid for transfer, paid for dinner. However, I had to wait around for many hours for them to do it.

If it's not their fault, eg weather related, well that's what insurance is for.

      • Pre-Covid days I remembered being bumped off a Virgin flight in the night, was provided a meal voucher, and overnight hotel stay in Sydney Darling Harbour… and I was able to claim for taxis to/from the airport to the hotel. Replacement flight was for the next morning and I was travelling economy class… is that no longer applicable?

        • Depends on the reason for why you were bumped.

          • @Trance N Dance: A whole bunch of other passengers also bumped off the SYD-MEL flight, can't remember if the cancelled flight was due to weather or mechanical issues… hence those that could fly were put onto later flights or Qantas (where available), the rest were given overnight stays and returned for staggered timed flights the next morning with Virgin…

    • +2

Isn't what travel insurance is for?

      • +6

Shouldn't have to have travel insurance for this. You pay for a service, they should deliver, just like anyone else.

      • +1

Travel insurance won't cover operational reasons for cancelling/delaying a flight as it's the airline's responsibility to pay for a new flight and accommodation. Travel insurance covers things like weather related delays/cancellations.

        • Mine did

Big fan of rex, great service comfy seats and includes a meal and check in luggage

    • how much checked luggage if you dont mind me asking?

      • +1

It's on their website, but 23kg for standard domestic and 15kg for regional.

    • comfy seats

Is that in the SAAB 340 prop?

  • +8

    Rex now do biggies!

  • -1

Rex doesn't have a cooling off period like other airlines. So if you make a mistake you are screwed and have to pay a change fee even if you make the change 2 minutes after booking.

  • -3

The Melbourne flight price jacking is insane for the Grand Prix weekend. Same goes for hotels.

    • +17

      That’s called supply and demand

      • +4

Nah, Australians are being rorted when it comes to air travel due to the usual suspects not allowing for any competition. We pay some of the highest prices in the world for air travel.

        • +4

Is the fact that Australia is a huge country with a relatively low population density why we may pay relatively higher prices for air travel?

          • +5

@Pecco: Nope, our flights between capital cities are amongst the busiest commercial routes in the world. Most of them are no more than 1-2 hours long.

Sydney - Melbourne for example was the 3rd busiest air route in the world by passenger numbers in 2019.

            • @vodamerc: And prepandemic if you booked early enough and at the right time you could go return syd and Mel for less than $100. Of course that's no longer a thing right now, but we did have cheap flights.

              • @wackedupwacko: That’s exactly the point… we are being taken for a ride. Business is more profitable than ever for Australian airlines. Prices around the rest of the world have been back to ‘normal’ for a long time.

    • That’s not jack

    • +1

Agree with you prices are insanely high

    • I believe the promo fare has a limit per flight, so once all the promos are done for a flight its not going to be that cheap anymore. I flew Rex last year for the Grand Prix and I booked in my flights on rex for 2023 Grand Prix weekend too and got the flights this time around for $79 each way as well. I think a lot of the promo seats around the Grand Prix week booked up a few months ago.

  • +4

Thanks for the booking one way hack, OP. Did not know - I've only ever booked returns.

    • +3

      Nice tip to test

  • +1

If looking for a return ticket, see this video on how two one way tickets can save you money

    Nice.

  • +3

I was going to book an advertised $79 fare, but got slugged at the checkout with airport taxes.
Surely this is illegal? The full price has to be advertised with all taxes.

I was distracted by $2.40 to send an email jesus christ

      • +13

I doubt it is really jesus christ sending the emails. Most likely his PA.

    • Bit hard to know what you are showing as 792 for 4 passengers return is $99 each person each way.

If it's $79 then it might be for certain flights on that day.

Not defending anyone, just saying there is more to the story than just $79 as I would have expected it magically not to be $99….

    • Take a screenshot of the fare selection rather than the total breakdown. Going by the total amount of $792, it looks like 2x$99 fares (to make a return) for each of the 4 travelling passengers.

      • oh yeah.. how embarrassing. Please downvote my comment then.

I flew REX to Melbourne in December, a couple of days before the departure I bid $50 for the upgrade to business. To my surprise the bid got accepted.

    • Wouldn't be surprised that this would be common. BNE-SYD last weekend was wide open with $349 business class available up until departure.

    • +1

I got my two kids under 10 and I upgraded to business class for $10 each ADL - MEL on christmas eve. The kids loved the wifi but the littlest one asked if we could move back so we could all sit together in the 3 wide config. No, no we cant.

  • +1

    Now doing biggies.

  • Why are the rural flights so much more expensive? What happened to Rex :(

  • Seeing a big 500 error when I try to go to the btf website :-/

    • try a reload. Part of the site uses wordpress to serve up content and it's being problematic occasionally.

  • Lots of people sharing their business upgrade wins

How much did you bid that got accepted?

    I bid $150 extra on top of a $140
one way existing flight but didn't get accepted.. Sydney to Brisbane

  • Is Rex better than JetStar?

    • more on-time, and includes checked luggage.

  • -1

Sorry but how’s one way flight even worth considering ?
Are you expecting people to mover permanently? Or should I bother investigating one-way departure + one-way return against a normal return ticket? Not worth the hassle imo.

    • You do realise domestic "return" tickets are really just two one way fares squished together. Booking a return ticket will return the same price as booking the same fares individually as one way tickets.

      • -1

I can tell you a return ticket is usually cheaper than two one way or even a single one way. But maybe that's for international only…

So are domestic flights always following that pattern cost of one way + cost of one-way = cost of return?
Is it with any airlines and Australian specifics or any domestic flights in most countries?

I recently booked a BOD FRA (Fr & DE) where the the return ticket was even cheaper than a single one-way.

        • +1

It's the case with the major airlines for domestic in Australia, can't speak for other countries. (VA, QF, JQ, ZL)

I'm guessing Fr and DE are France and Germany, in which case that's an international itinerary and so yes a one-way fare will push you into a flex fare (on non-LCC carriers). The return fare will allow you to book into the cheaper fares, which a lot of the time will be cheaper as a return than a one-way.

    • +1

As per the description, two one ways can be cheaper than return - examples here

      • Good to know, thanks

  • Site down??

  • I flew with them before. They cancelled my flights while I was making my way to the airport. On a Sunday 8pm flight. I was forced to buy the next day with a different company which cost me $350+
Because of that one time, I don’t know if they would get my 2nd chances again… It was annoying. But don’t let that get into ya. Because that’s pretty cheap flights.
