  • That's good shit. Thanks OP

  • Any recommendations on this or is there a better model to go for?

    • I've recently bought a second one, the first has been that good. Had it for years and it hasn't missed a beat. Excellent price.

I have one, it's decent. It's good at pressure cooking but other functions (that i use) is quite bad.

It's too weak for searing, for instance. And you also can't use to cook a pot of anything that requires "medium flame".

      • I like my Phillips better (got both)

      • +1

Always says item won't post to you. Tried a few addresses.

It's a bit more expensive but the Instant Pot models are good
      https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B0B7MNC2CP.

They have a full stainless steel bowl too

    • Don't forget to put the seal in when you cook under pressure. Steam vapour gets into the electronics and fries it. Otherwise a solid unit. The Yoghurt is brilliant.

    • Philips is 1300 watt, Instant Pots are 1000 watt. Philips will heat up faster and sear better. Never had an issue searing.
Absolutely love this machine, use it all the time. Have had it for 3 years and recently upgraded to the (optional) stainless steel pot.

  • +1

Have this model for about 3 years. Works really well and not too hard to clean either. You also have the option to get a stainless steel inner pot.

  • +1

Put it in simple words coming from a chef ..buy this it is top notch ..been using it for stews, soups curries and much more and had never missed a beat ..been using it for the last 6 years

    • Chef de McDonald?

      • -1

Na chef Gordon Ramsey ha ha

    • Amen, it's incredibly good. I'll bit this as a spare, even if mine has been flawless for years.

  • How about Instant Pot compares with this model?

    • More recipes online for instant pot, but you can use them for Phillips too with dune adjustments. I like the Phillips better because of the lid and options of 3 types of inner pots I use. Maybe they exist for instant pot too, didn't check.

This or an instant pot nova duo 8L for $150 when on sale at Amazon?

Does the wife need the extra 2L?
    Inb4 2inch

      • $124. Interesting. Now need to check comparison to see if the Plus will be enough

        • duo plus is second only to the pro, no?

          • @follow: Ah so it is.

Have you compared this against the Phillip?

            • +1

@Owgasm: I'd say instant pot is better for the extra 2l and stainless steel bowl. Only $15 more.

              • +1

@follow: Thanks, tried to check out on the link, says it wont post to my address. Whereabouts are you?

                • +1

@Owgasm: yeah same here haha. thought others could take advantage

        • Was this on sale for $124? Currently 174 for me

  • One thing I'd make sure is it has a timer for after cooking is done, so you can time slow release method. Model we have has no timer which can make it a PITA if you are not there with it.

Ive been using this cooker for about 7 years. I highly recommend it.

    Cheap!

I have it, I don't have much to compare it to though and didn't read a ton of reviews. It does exactly what it says it does. The only three things I've noticed (and only one is Philips specific) are:

    1) The non-stick coating is meant to be some fancy wizz bang stuff but started flecking off super fast (but there is a chance my housemate used metal utensils, definitely don't).

    2) The times for recipes are often wrong. I don't think this is a Philips issue, I think it's because they are normally written as '1 x chicken breast' rather than a weight or thickness. I've now started making things uniform thickness or searching for a time per __ grams/lbs for things like a whole chicken.

3.) Some of the hype about how quick it is is bullshit. The actual cooking time is super speedy, but it has to get up to pressure first. Then many recipes call for a 'natural release' where the pressure slowly normalises rather than venting all the steam. This process can be 10-40 minutes.
For instance a 2kg chicken "takes 27 minutes to cook" but there's a secret 5-10 minutes to build pressure and the 15 minute natural release and the 5-10 minutes under the grill (or using the simmer function before cooking) if you want brown skin. So in reality it's about an hour, which is still quicker than an oven, but it isn't 27 minutes.

    • +1

hardly an issue, of course it takes time to build pressure it's simple physics. All instant pot do that.

regarding the 'natural release', even if recipes call for that you don't have to follow it. just whack it open and let it release manually i've always done it. Doesn't alter the taste or texture in any way.

    • Never cared about slow release, all vines good regardless. Soups, stews and risotto are heavenly good, and so is rice pudding if you don't mind the sugar (not healthy), for a small treat. You can cook almost anything in it.

    • Unless you're cooking something that froths or has the liquid level right up to the max, venting it makes very little difference to the final taste/texture. In fact if you want to stop cooking, best practice is to vent it otherwise the food keeps cooking for some time afterwards.

That said, absolutely do not vent it if cooking chickpeas, lentils of any sort or rice. The liquid inside will froth up and you'll get a fountain of lentil soup in your kitchen.

Another tip is to vent it in your Alfresco if you can, because it releases a lot of steam when venting, and your food aromas will go everywhere.

Note: to get separate stainless steel pot is extra ~$50 vs Instant Pot's pot which is stainless steel.

  • Anyone works at JB? Can I price match this item?

    • +1

I don't think they price match with voucher

      • Thanks, I will buy it online then.

  • +1

Why would I need this in my life? What does it offer in terms of ease of cooking and/or quality of the meals I could be eating?

    • Just buy and play around with it later.

      • It's good for making stock, and making tough meat soft.

        • Isn’t that what a $25 Kmart slow cooker does ? I have the same query as to why it’s so great, as I want to buy it if it adds value

          • +2

@Onemoredeal: A slow cooker cooks slooooow, …this one uses pressure to cook quick.

            • @9hundred: Anyway they are all gone now. It's toooooo late!

            • @9hundred: Cheers mate, I was reading about chickens that take an hour and how it’s good for stock and soup, struggling to understand how it adds value to a oven a slow cooker and a rice cooker . I own one of each lol

  • I've had one of these for about 4 years and absolutely love it. Gets hot enough to sear whatever i need and does pressure cooking and slow cooking great. That's my total use case and i find it perfect. I did pay double this price too.

  • Isn't non stick better than stainless? Surely easier to clean?

    • yeah it's easy to clean, but it's all sold now anyway

  • OOS 🥲

  • Great price for good cooker. For those who interested what to expect and a couple of negative points of this pressure cooker here is quick video. Hope it will help someone: https://youtu.be/mYbAyn-9W4I

  • Sold 😔

  • +1

We use this on a daily basis and it's just awesome. Never skipped a bit

  • Have it, recommend it.

  • Have it, don't really recommend it. If anyone that can get to Southbank, Vic wants one, I have one with an extra pot (second one is stainless steel) that I'm happy to give away for good karma. The aluminium inner lid is oxidised, but the cooker still works perfectly.

    • Where did you get the spare pot from mate? I'm thinking down the line I may need to replace ours.

      • I think it was Optimum Electronic Solutions, though I believe they have been replaced as authorised Philips supplier by Statewide Appliance Spares (I got parts for Philips pasta maker, which I do recommend).

  • Anyone received this yet? Mine still doesnt even have a tracking number.

    • +1

      Nope

    • Mine was just shipped today. Ordered around 6pm
