  • Great price on the Impress lights. Bought 4 at xmas for $150 and thought that was a steal. Great find OP hope it helps someone.

shame the up down lights dont seem to be on sale

  • +2

I bought cheap coach lights from bunnings and used wiz smart bulbs. Scheduled them to ON from sunset to sunrise.
These are great at long as you have budget.

    • oh yeah i've got that coach light too lol but its the sensor one so i only have it switched on when im popping out of the house else its off during the night

  • +3

The indoor motion sensors are great for Hue security, when they are armed and motion is detected, a push notification comes through to your phone. The feature is free and no subscription required, works really well.

    • i can't read the japanese on the photo but its showing this is linked to the lights? how does that work?

      • +1

Use the app on your phone (Hue) to set it up. You can set up a sensor to control any hue light (or multiple lights) on the same network, you can set different actions for different times of the day/night etc. It works, it's handy.

    • Pretty impressed by them, I've got three so far. Hallway to cover people walking out of 3 bedrooms and 1 bathroom so can dim the hallway light and laundry (has toilet in there) automatically at night one pointing to top of stairs and both been rocket solid - all automation is done through Home Assistant but using the hue triggers for motion detected and motion cleared. Pretty much have it perfect after a lot of back and forth and accounting for variables like if the lights were already on and stuff like that. Last thing I need to do is use the Illuminance values because after sunrise sometimes on days with overcast weather its still pretty dark in my hallway.

Also doubles as a temp sensor which I didn't know about until I added it to Home Assistant so 1 less device to have around if you want to automate around temp sensors (if account enough)

      • Yeah, I first noticed the temp sensor in google home, blows my mind that you can't view that info in the hue app natively! Also contains a lux sensor as well of course, which you can read through google home or similar. I feel like there is hardware functionlity there which isn’t fully supported by hue, yet.

        • You used to be able to, i stopped buying Hue about 5 years ago but just opened the app and you can't see the temps anymore. When you opened Hue labs, it used to list all your motion sensors and their temps in a list.

          • @LowRange: Oh right, I forgot about that, annoyingly Philips shut down hue labs in June 2024.

They now offer beta testing of new functions directly in the Hue app :-/

    • Does the outdoor sensor also provide push notifications?

      • Not through the Hue app, I don't know about other apps.

  • pretty expensive for the outdoor motion sensor light and its battery operated - you'd have to change the battery every month maybe?
im sure there would be cheaper alternatives so why is this popular/recommended?

    • +5

The Hue ecosystem is expensive, there's no doubt about it. Generally I would say Hue is one of the most stable and reliable systems you can get, functionality is good as well.

I bought my outdoor sensors in Aug 2022 and I've replaced the batteries once in that time. I suggest you should get minimum 12 months, up to 24 months out of a set of batteries. Depending on quality and usage of course. I use rechargeable batteries in mine (eneloops as per OzB standard lol), you might get even longer life out of a quality set of single use batteries though.

Also, the app will tell you when the battery is running low, so you'll know ahead of time when it needs replacing. And being battery operated, you can legally DIY the installation, and of course it can be reprogrammed at any time to work for different lights (without rewiring).

Having said all that, I have had 2 lights fail out of warranty, Philips does recommend not using them in enclosed light fittings, so possibly heat failure can be a risk. I have heaps of these globes, some in sealed fittings, so 2 failures isn't too bad.

    • My two outdoor sensors were installed in 2023. Still on the original batteries.

    • 2 years later, still on the same 2 little batteries

  • Thanks OP. Was in late for the outdoor lights as it’s now temporarily oos, but ordered 3 to integrate with my current Hue system

  • OOS.

  • I shows the price as 206 for me, only 10% discount?

    • Sold out now. That listing is Amazon Germany.

  • Damn, I missed the Impress outdoor lights

  • Is it true you need 6x bar lights for the behind the TV setup?

    • +1

Why would you buy 6x bar lights when you can buy a dedicated Hue TV light strip? But you will also need a sync box, that's another $400…

  • Damn I have been hanging out for a deal on that exact lamp for ages. Thanks OP, sadly I was far too slow!

  • Any flood lights

  • "Philips Hue Gradient Ambiance Lightstrip Base Kit, 2 Metre Length" down to $142 (-45%)

    https://www.amazon.com.au/Philips-Hue-Gradient-Ambiance-Ligh…

    • yeah got 2 - best price ive seen for the gradients

      • what's the difference between the gradients and this - https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B08BLHX5FB/

        • +1

Gradients do exactly as they say many colours along one strip, where as the non gradient is one base colour selected at a time.

          • @oO0Dam0Oo: I see the lightstrip can be multi colour. How many leds can you change in a strip?

            • @cheap4321: Hmmm 🤨 didn’t think you could.

              • @oO0Dam0Oo: so it's just default colours like rainbow, red+green etc - it's not customizable?

  • looks like the price has gone back up for the outdoor light.

    showing $206

  • Does anybody use the Philips Hue with the Raspberry Pi Home Assistant?

    • Yes, super easy to set up

    • Yes works relatively well. I even have the Hue akari in our walk in triggered by an Aqara motion sensor via Home Assistant.

Rest of Hue lights all on timers based on sunset/sunrise via HA.

      • Do you need the Hue hub for that?

        • +1

Yes, also have the Aqara hub usb for the Aqara gear (ie motion sensors, door/window sensors, leak sensors & temperature sensors)..

Most things you connect to home assistant need their own hub..

    • Yes works very well. I use it via the Hue Bridge but you can connect directly as well via a Zigbee co-ordinator

    • I use heaps of Hue bulbs, Indoor Motion Sensor and various Hue switches on Home Assistant bare metal running on an Intel N97 mini PC, connected to SONOFF ZBDongle-E Dongle Plus (acts as a Zigbee coordinator). Works like a dream.

I previously ran the same setup on a Raspberry Pi 3B+, but it eventually became extremely unstable and kept crashing and getting corrupted — I suspected the RPi's 1GB of RAM just wasn't enough for Home Assistant and the large number of Zigbee devices I have. It should run perfectly on a Raspberry Pi 5 as that has more RAM, but the Intel N100 and other N-series mini PCs are far better value IMO.

The Hue Indoor Motion Sensor in particular is brilliant — very sensitive, extremely reliable and detects and responds instantly. Battery life is fantastic, easily lasts 1-2 years with regular and constant use.

  • It looks like most of the Hue range is on sale - I've seen sensors and downlights for 20-30% off too.

If you take these prices to bunnings for the products they sell, they will price match and beat them by 5%.

    • My Bunnings rarely have hue stock on the shelf

  • -1

is anyone actually buying this or is it only an impulse thing and it ends up in storage?

    • +1

I’m buying switches and light strips… these are good prices for quality kit.

  • +2

I bought 4 indoor and 2 outdoor sensors. I use Zigbee devices from Aliexpress to monitor Lux / Sensors which cost around $7 to trigger events for curtains, lights but i find them unreliable. I have been very happy with the quality and stability of Hue and have over 20 lights at home and find this a good price for quality.

    • +2

This… stability is key with automation… don’t get it with the cheap stuff from Temu in my experience.

  • Had issues with my hue stuff dying lately around the 2 year mark luckily support has been good and sent me replacements

  • Does anyone know if the Hue dimmer switch V2 can be used to control LIFX downlights?

    • You should be able to do this if you use Home Assistant. I use my Hue Dimmer Switch V2 to control my Tapo smart bulbs and more via HA. If it's supported in HA, you can control it.

  • I have some Hue devices left over from starter kits, that would have been purchased years ago. Probably should throw them on eBay or something (along with half the things iii own). that still haven't been touched! Av1 dimmer switch with the protective plastic attached! Lol

As such, batteries report 100% in all devices in question except 1 dimmer switch which I guess I fiddled around with. But since they don't integrate with the rest of my Tuya based smarthome I only ever used the bulbs in conjunction with the motion sensors.

Recently installed. DIYhue Docker container and broke all hue function. This Hub is determined to communicate on ch25 and no other. I'm ignoring it for now

  • is this internal? because if its external and facing the road, its a piñata

  • I just bought the two Hue Play bars from Officeworks with price beat of the Amazon price. $125.87 was my final total & was able to do click and collect.

  • +1

indoor motion sensor back to $68

    • +1

Can still be bought by choosing seller as Amazon just need to wait 1-2 mths

    • Available again FYI. Off backorder too.
