Given I have a 3 year old and a newborn, I probably can't open this anytime soon given the choking hazards… but it's finally my year (giving away my age) so I better buy this set!

… exploring the Lego site now, and wish that Amazon sold the Money Tree 40648 set too.

I'm the same age (or at least the same lunar year) with similar aged kids (1 and 4) and I recommend you get the older one into Lego asap. We've had Lego on the house since before the second one was born. Not only is it good for the their fine motor skills but it gives you plausible deniability when you buy Lego for yourself. Recently, we've had to completely segregate the Lego from the 1YO but so far nothing has been consumed.

We have a LOT of Duplo including last years CNY sets too. I do want to get them into Lego asap (I grew up loving lego technic!).

I’m more worried my 6 month old (unlike our first) puts everything into her mouth. Like literally everything. So I’m a bit more cautious this time around.

We've set the Lego up in a room and then put a baby gate across the door way to keep the 1YO out. It also lets the 4YO have his own space to do things like puzzles and colouring without being harassed by an inquisitive but unhelpful brother.

Actually I've gotten some Creator sets for my daughter since she was 4. She's 5 and a half now. She's getting better at building some sets.

Jokes aside from justifying the hobby, there's a few things about building LEGO that can help kids develop skills

        1) Motor Skills
        2) Patience
        3) Ability to follow instructions
        4) Counting, this is quite good because sometimes a few of the longer pieces there there's many studs, and I tell her to count the studs to figure out if she got the right one
        5) Developing the skill of being observant. Some steps in lego sets are very vague, they don't always highlight exactly where the pieces have been used, so this requires your ability to observant and notice the subtle aspects, it's actually like making them do spot the difference, between current step and previous step.

Anyways I always think it's quite educational, like if you get them the $15-$20 Creator sets, or the 3 in 1 types, they're quite educational overall.

I got some Creator set at xmas that had gears etc, and most the small builds makes use of the gears so that it's useful for kids to see how the gears all connect up to be able to make things move.

        • Great comment.

I think we got the same creator set. I liked that the individual builds in that set came packed separately, plastic waste notwithstanding. It made for easy bite sized builds for the 4YO. He's pretty good at following the instructions but still needs some help getting some things connected as he lacks finger strength.

          • @twjr: fwiw, i noticed they made more changes with the new boxes/sets… one particular one is that the box now doubles up as a flip up box / 'temp store' for all the brick parts you can pour into.

also the plastic bag material seems to have changed to thinner ones…

            • @slowmo: Yep. I noticed the same thing with one of the new Missions sets we got my son for Xmas. Being able to reuse the box was pretty useful for that set as it's designed for replayability.

@kerfuffle: only when school grades/positions is being discussed… that's where the canes comes out. :)

is there a reason this is so popular, don't usually get lego unless like atleast 70% off

  • <addict to LEGO. Good set. sub 100 would be nice. However its personal choice when it comes to LEGO.

  • Will Amazon will get the money tree set?

    • I’m hoping for it!

Certainly much better than last year's ice skating effort.

    • Last year's sets were appalling. I pulled the trigger way too early at the first sale prices from Build and Play and regretted it as it was discounted much more after. This year at least Rick James also did these current sale prices with free shipping and posted fast last week. Ironically, I'm predicting that it may be the tree, the cheapest out of all the sets, that may sell out fastest closer to the date and go for higher scalped prices.

  • is this available in store if anyone knows?

Saw them at Lego shop in Melbourne Central but at RRP
