  • Not sure why this phone is so popular it only has a 60hz display

      • Asus zenfone 9 is No3? Really?

        • I tried to do the same blind test and for me, it was two Pixels and two iPhones on top, with a very close score, everything else significantly worse, including zenfone 9.

          • @DmytroP: Something fishy about these tests.

            • @nikoris: It looks ok, the only issue - it included only 3 scenes (two portraits and one low light, I did only one image), otherwise, the test looks valid.
For me the unexpected result was - S22 Ultra was among the worst phones, after Moto Edge and Realme.

It's a reasonable test to check how do you like the postprocessing configuration of different phones, it reasonably matches my earlier preferences - I don't like the overdone heavy postprocessing more common with Chinese phones.

Pixels are very appealing phones, to the online community. But you are correct, 60hz phones are a thing of the past. 90 should be the bare minimum for a phone that costs more than $400

      • +16

Why does a high refresh even matter. If you want a decent phone to use as, well, a phone and with a decent camera, it seems like a perfect fit. I have a Pixel 4 and run it on 60hz and have no problem with the usability at all.

        • +1

I understand where you're coming from but the difference is very huge. You'll know when you upgrade.
My first high refresh phone was a pixel 5 and i just cant go back to 60hz, feels so laggy now.

          • +2

@nikoris: That's true but also not the end of the world. Sincerely an iPhone 8 user with a 165Hz gaming monitor.

            • +2

@Skele-Cr: As i said, for any new phone that costs a reasonable amount, 90hz should be the bare minimum. I really cant stand 60hz after 2 years of high refresh rate goodness.
Pretty obvious when i touch my wife's 60hz phone or her 60hz tablet.

            • @Skele-Cr: An iPhone would handle this better. Don't know if they do some sort of interpolation or what but reports early on (when android was newly getting high hertz displays) were that iPhones seemed smoother (albeit not to the level of higher hertz androids) despite being locked to 60.

Also, since you are interacting with a phone that it's more tactile and "intimate" than a mouse and monitor. People say they notice the difference being more jarring on the phone side.

          • +2

@nikoris: Not entirely correct. I've just moved from a Galaxy S10 5G (60Hz) to Pixel Pro 7 (120Hz) and it's definitely not a game changer and certainly not "huge". The camera is a game changer, nothing else.

          • +3

@nikoris: I can't notice the difference when scrolling ozbargain with a 6a in my left hand and a 5 in my right.

            • @Tim Mc: So, what does that make me? Weird for seeing the obvious difference? lol

          • +4

@nikoris: Switched to 120 Hz from 60 earlier this year, not a big deal IMO. I frequently go back to 60 when using other people's phones and it doesn't even register as a difference to me. I definitely wouldn't base a purchasing decision on it.

        • If you arent used to it and aren't exposed to it in the day-to-day then you have nothing to fret.

For the ones that do, coming back down to 60 feels likes the phones lagging.

        • +1

I used to think it was a silly thing that only gamers cared about, but I couldn't move back to 60Hz. It feels clunky. And somehow the whole phone feels more responsive at 120Hz.

    • +4

I've been using a 120Hz display for the last two years and honestly, I couldn't care less about the 60Hz refresh rate on this phone.

      • +1

I dont understand you, do you mean you mind or you dont mind the 60hz screen lol

        • +3

That was my convoluted way of saying that I don't mind the 60Hz screen ;)

      • Same my Poco x3 pro has 120hz I run it on 60hz to save battery

    • +1

Because 99% of people don’t care or know what your talking about

      • +2

        you're*

    • Because its phenomenal value. Along with the article linked below, MKBHD also awarded it best camera of 2022, meaning it beat out phones with amazing cameras for double or even triple the price, including the iPhone 14 Pro/Pro Max, Galaxy S22 Ultra, Pixel 7 Pro etc

      • -3

Better camera system, it doesn't have a better camera than most of its competitors which is what MKBHD said.

$569 for a 60hz choppy phone. Once you go above 60hz, you can't go back.

Makes my Lenovo Y70 144hz feels like a bargain, which i bought for $489.

I get how some people may value higher refresh rates; what I don't understand is how they think that everyone else has to care about it!

I've been using a 120Hz phone for the last two years and recently disabled the high refresh rate (switched to 60Hz) to save battery and it affects me so little that I actually forgot that my phone had this feature.

        • Yeah, it depends on what people do.
If you like to browse a lot and read text then a faster refresh rate is good

I do that a lot so i prioritize that feature when purchasing.

        • -1

Not everyone is tech savvy, if you dont care, no problem. Of course.

          • +1

@nikoris: I don't think being tech-savvy has anything to do with that. It's just personal taste!

Fyi, I've been using computers for 30 years and developing software for more than 25 years (with about 9 years of mobile app development experience). Also although my Bachelor's and Master's degrees are in computer software, I have hands-on experience in hardware/electronics (e.g. designing simple electronic boards as a hobby). So, I'd say whatever the definition of tech-savvy is, I probably will fit into that.

    • i don't know why the $1500 iphone 14 plus is so popular it only has a 60hz display

      • -2

        I don't know why a $1,500 Samsung is so popular , your point ?

  • +3

This would be a better deal - you could try and pricematch and use the coupon

    • I tried, JB Hi-fi wouldn't price match

    • I price beat with OW down to $453 a few days ago. Sounds like it's hit or miss. Product is the same. G1AZG UKCA.

  • Is normal price in listing correct? Says $599 for me online, not 569

    • $569 with code 92GET30JAN applied at checkout. Will update.

As pointed out by others, why pay much more when you can get if from Amazon for less, other than a 10 day wait time.

    • +2

It's way more than a 10-day wait time. I ordered from Amazon 7 days ago and it's not shipped yet, also there's no indication of when they may ship it. Based on other people's comments, looks like waiting for more than a month for Amazon UK to ship is not out of the question!

      • Oh boy.. I just placed an order today. I really hope it’s not going to take that long

        • Had the unfortunate experience of ordering 2 phones from Amazon UK. Delayed a month then suddenly cancelled. Price increased but Amazon customer care promised to reimburse price difference so reordered again with assistance from Amazon rep. After another month, still pending…. Escalated the matter and was advised to order elsewhere and Amazon reimbursed the difference. I love buying from amazon and that was my worst experience yet. Total wait of about 3 months! I'm also a prime member btw.

          • @Kyx: Wow that’s quite the stuff around! Did they say it was due to lack of stock? Or just issues getting it to Australia?

            • @63pinecone: Nobody knows! Customer service was helpful but they were also in the dark. It seemed that Amazon UK were selling products indicating in stock but actually wasn't. They gave me a tip saying if you order and didn't get an expected delivery date, it usually means its actually not in stock

    • -1

The benefit of local stock is if something goes wrong and you need to make a warranty claim.

      From Amazon:

      Amazon Global Store

International products have separate terms and are sold from abroad and may differ from local products including fit, age rating, and language of product, labeling, or instructions, or plugs (you may require an adapter).

Manufacturer warranty may not apply but you may have other rights under law.

      • +1

Amazon have a very good return/refund policy when it comes to warranty, so I’m never too phased ordering from them

  • Pixel 7 could be bought for about $590 after Officeworks price beat using the discounted gift cards short time ago.
