After OzB'ers cleaned out the warehouse in the last deal, the giant slayer for vocal mics is back

When setup correctly with a pop filter, cheap stand and some EQ, this mic gives 90% of the Shure SM7B sound for 5% of the price
Good info here, here and here

Solid build quality and bundled with a nice case
Requires an XLR cable and audio interface for connecting to a PC (someone in the comments can confirm XLR/USB adapter usage)

If you're disturbed by the SM7B's price and don't want to risk the thousands of cheaper fakes that now litter eBay, get this

  • Weird, says 4 left but adding to cart says temporarily out of stock.

    • ok now the listing says temporarily out of stock again.

  • Oos

  • What budget friendly XLR interface do people recommend?

Or will this mic be fine with a XLR to USB cord.

Purpose: gaming, conferencing and some amateur recording requirements

    • I've been very happy with my Behringer UMC204HD, I'm sure the smaller ones perform pretty well too.

  • Swamp have their DM58 for $50.99. Fairly decent make.

    • Hi,

I notice you recommended this in the other mic post also.

Is there anything about it that seems particularly superior to the xm8500?

Purpose will primarily be teenagers (female) recording singing and possibly violin, trumpet and trombone.

Thanks, I am out of my depth!

      • This is based on the original SM58, which Musicians have been using since 1966. I only put this up here, as I saw there were only 4 units left. Behringer are value for money brand, and the products are usually very good.

Swamp usually have decent gear as well, especially their cables.

        • Thanks

  • Heyy, I am the one who posted the original deal for this microphone. Excellent piece of equipment that I cannot recommend highly enough. I have been using it for a while now and frequently receive compliments about how I sound in Discord lol. In my opinion, this microphone is even better than the SM7B despite being cheaper.

    • what budget headphones do you recommend to go along with this mic? I am getting this mic for podcasting

    • In my opinion, anyone that says that has never practically back to backed an sm7b with proper kit to drive it.

It does a good job, incredible at the price point even, but lets not jerk the gherkin TOO hard.

      • Yes that's the problem, most people buying the SM7B don't set it up properly and it sounds crap as a result. The SM7B is better in theory, but in practice for the average person it is worse. This is specifically for livestreaming/podcasts (should have mentioned that). If I listen to a podcast or join a stream and hear a SM7B I can instantly tell what mic it is and that it isn't set up properly, but to most people it sounds fine (then again I do have a better audio setup than most)

        • That's user error, and kind of like saying a Ferrari is slower than a corolla because someone put diesel in it. On balance, it's unmitigated bullshit.

The same users will make the same setup errors with this cheap mic, but it's designed to run off almost nothing (like directly into a motherboard mic input) so they get away with it to a greater degree.

Which is cool, it has it's place, but no. It is not better than the SM7B by any conceivable metric.

          • @[Deactivated]: It's more like saying a Corolla is better than a Ferrari that needs serious tuning to run properly. One will work a lot more easily for the average person while the other will not. If the Shure is not being set up properly then the Behringer is better simply by being easier for people to use and having it just work. I would still recommend the XM8500 over the SM7B to almost anyone who asks. Ultimately either can be better depending on how you define "better" and what criteria is being used. Are you a big time Youtuber with unlimited budget and someone who can set everything up for you? Get the Shure. Are you a simpleton like myself who doesn't want to spend much time or money setting everything up but still want professional audio quality? Get the Behringer.

            • @s1Lence: It takes less time, effort, and cost to "setup" a SM7B than has ever taken before, in all of human history. There's an entire internet of "how to" guides for most any given things.

Sorry, but again, your declaration that it's "better" because "people do the wrong thing" is still a categorically bullshit call when comparing products.

You can say it's easier to use, you can say it has a lower barrier to entry in several regards, but it is simply completely and utterly bluntly false statement to say "this microphone is even better than the SM7B". Lol.

              • @[Deactivated]: Again, it's all about how you define better. To me, a Corolla is better than a Ferrari. You enjoy your Ferrari though.

  • How do I connect these up to do karaoke with a projector?
