  • Does seem very cheap for current pricing.

    • +2

It was borderline 'too good to be true' territory, but not unprecedented. Especially as newer larger drives are making an appearance; that should push the prices down (albeit we know that hasn't always been the reality!)

In fact, on a $ per tb basis, it's not that far off other recent deals; there was an 18tb drive a few days ago, which was $25/TB vs $22/TB here.

      • Ok your comments has convinced me .. Got one :(

        • I love how you use the sad emote. Totally understandable haha

  • I ordered but would love to hear from people with experience. I will be plugging this as an internal drive in my PC, and transferring all the backup files from my other 4Tb drives to it, as they're getting old. Not an OS drive, but PC will be on most of the time.

What's the life expectancy on recently made drives like this?

    • Expect a HDD to die whenever it feels like. Could be literally any time so just make sure you have stuff you want to keep backed up.
I have almost 10 years power on time on my old 2TB WD Green drives, you just never know with this kind of hardware.

    • +3

I'm not a huge expert (but do have a ~200TB Server, so do have some experience).

These are geared towards 'NAS' usage, so they should be better geared towards regular, sustained usage.
Seagate did have a bit of a 'dud' batch of drives in some of their basic 8TB drives some years back - I actually stopped using Seagate after losing a few from this era and been using WD since … but everything I've read in recent years suggests Seagate drives are generally just as reliable as the competition - and as I say, these aren't their entry point drives, but slightly better.

    • +3

Life expectancy of NAS enterprise drives like this is generally excellent. I have a mixed group of 14 Ironwolf Pros and Exos drives operating 24/7, haven't had a failure in around 4 years. But as others have said, nothing is guaranteed, while the failure chance is smaller with these devices, it's still a non zero number. Even high end SSDs can and will fail eventually. Always use an appropriate backup/redundancy strategy when storing data.

    • Remember that as a general rule NAS drives will be noisier that desktop drives.

  • almost neologys bulk buy price

but arent exos drives better than ironwolf

    • +1

Exos are enterprise, so reasonable assumption that they're better (albeit, will the average consumer be able to perceive such an improvement? No idea)

      • yeah i guess the main improvement is longevity

        waiting for sub $300 prices

this is great for local warranty etc

      • How about WD red?

  • These are louder than their WD counterparts?

    • No idea, but I can't say I've ever noticed much variation in comparably sized and sped drives.

  • Has anyone ordered bare drives from Amazon before?

Have heard horror stories about drives arriving in cardboard boxes with no padding so I generally go for the elements drives and shuck as they come in the WD box…

    • Yeah I'm concerned about this … when buying from overseas I avoid 'bare' drives figuring the ones in caddys will have a little more protection from the journey.

Hopefully less of a risk with it being shipped domestically.

    • Been a long time but my previous one came in a plastic shell to act as a dampener. Seen stories of those being used but also omitted.

    • Yeah, I had an Amazon bumbling courier drop a drive (in a padded bag) when trying to walk up the stairs to hand-deliver it to me.

    • +1

Just received two 16tb drives from a recent sale. They arrived in their own boxes, both placed in the same Amazon plastic bag. The only protection was the two plastic HDD holders to take up space in the boxes so the drives didn't move around. Pretty bad, but not the worst I've seen.

      Edit - words

  • Waiting for a decent deal on the 20tbs.

    • +1

Same… Almost pulled the trigger on $510 for the 20tb WD elements the other day but was waiting for a better deal… Now the price has gone back up to like $700 :(

      • $22 per/tb and I'd be smitten

      • And now they're on sale for $485.

  • +1

Limited to 1. Trying to buy a 2nd for a NAS, doh

    • +1

Yeah I'd have liked 2, but on the flip side, it's nice that more people get to benefit from the price when they do it this way.

  • Far out, I just bought an 8TB for 339 a couple months ago. Just snagged one of these. No brainer for my plex box.

    • Why was it 339, can get 8tb for 180-200

      • Isn’t $180-$200 typically the lower end ones like Baraccudas rather than those rated for NAS use.

      • it was the Pro which costs more.

  • $22.02 / TB

  • Has anyone had any experience using Seagate drives such as the one in this deal for NVR / surveillance function?

My research indicates WD Purple is the way to go.

    • Using a Skyhawk surveillance in my dream machine pro with always on recording five cameras. It’s still alive. Can’t really say much more unless it dies.

  • Bought one, good to be able to buy straight from Amazon AU instead of the US.

  • Only 1?

Can you create a 2nd order or do I need another Account?

Negged for asking a question. Seriously.

    • I unnegged you, as for second account, not sure.

    • +1

Do not order with another account. They will threaten to ban you and the other account or outright ban both.

  • FOMO got me good. I wanted the 16TB, but for ~60% more meant that this one was a no brainer.

Now, I just have to buy a desktop computer.

  • Most people probably want these for NAS and Server use, good deal but limited to 1 quantity makes this so annoying.

    Was ready to buy 5.

    • I just need to replace old drives I shucked from external enclosures that failed for backup. Could make it work with 2 as my Plex Server is 32tb (non raid).

    • Thanks OP. Just canceled my order for 2x 12TB from this deal a couple of weeks ago. Then as I ordered got prompted I could only order one :(, so wife is now also ordering a second for me.
Agree is good to limit supply. Also good that it will turn up in a couple of days (the others are going to ship second week of Jan.

  • Sad you can only buy one. Would have liked to get 2. I guess I can just throw this into my regular PC. Hopefully cashback tracks. Don't get it for personal computers very often.

  • lol, buying this to replace my old 2TB drive. Probably have way too much space for my steam library

    • +1

Getting more Steam games seems like the only solution to that problem :-)

  • What are you guys putting on these drives and is it reliable enough it won't crash and I lose all my files. I'm gonna copy my 13TB move collection onto it which is currently on 3 separate drives

  • +1

Packaging: Shows what's inside. Item often ships in manufacturer container to reduce packaging. To hide what's inside, choose Ship in Amazon packaging at checkout.

^^^ MAKE SURE YOU DO THIS EXTRA STEP. It's on the Checkout page. Will ensure more packaging and consequently better protection.

    • I had to cancel my order to try to do this and now it's $599. 😭

  • +2

    showing $599 now

  • +1

oh god so annoyed to have missed this

  • When I go to buy it says sale price then in cart is $599?

  • Already out of stock and it hasn't been an hour and 20 minutes yet :(

  • +4

If you can wait for the next group buy I’d definitely do that. I got 2x 16tb Exos for around $570 AUD delivered.

    • where did you find such group buy deals

    • wow the group buy is cheap! When is the next group buy?

    • I'll probably take a punt on the next group buy.

    • Let me in, let me iiinnnnn!!

  • +3

the boxing days sales this year are just crap to be honest they dont' bend over the retailers here in Australia and people are still stupid enough to buy things even though there not good deals.

  • +3

Missed it. Although I prefer WD for historical experience with Seagate drives.

  • Do these 1hour deals ever come back or have we essentially missed it?

  • I just got 4 of these from China a couple months ago. Similar price.

    • A link to that source in China would be appreciated… I am chasing an 18TB unit, so am open to options.

      • This is what I bought, but the seller has other sizes and models. IDK how they have them so cheap though. I bought 1 inititally, did a bunch of tests, all looked legit, so I then bought the other 3. https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/185329053094
I actually made a post in the forums about it, asking if it's too good to be true, and how safe it is, consideirng ability to get refunds etc. I didn't want to post the link then though, in case someone bought them out before me lol. Everyone was saying don't topuch it, bound to be a scam etc. They seem fine so far. been running them in my NAS for a few weeks.

      • But I think Ebay was also recommending some from another seller that were nearly identical.

  • +1

Received the disk very quickly within 3 days.

However……. the disk is not AU stock. Which means warranty will have to deal with Amazon, can't do Seagate direct.

Don't believe me, go and enter the serial number into the warranty check.

    • Doesn't matter, you can contact with Amazon if Seagate refused warranty claims.

      • +1

Not that I'm worried about Amazon going bankrupt within the next 5 years. It's just the long lead time to get it replaced if this breaks.

        • +1

I had an Exos go bad after 14 mths that I bought from Amazon, they provided me a full refund.

    • I also noticed this. Appears to be US stock. Bit of a shame :/

    • Same with the drive I received today.

Also notice that my drive manufacture date = May 2021. Wonder where this has been sitting for the past 17 months?!?

  • Mine was originally due feb 3, but just arrived today.
