[Switch, PS5, PS4] Tactics Ogre: Reborn $39 + Delivery ($0 C&C/In-Store) @ JB Hi-Fi

760

Switch: https://www.jbhifi.com.au/products/nintendo-switch-tactics-ogre-reborn
PS5: https://www.jbhifi.com.au/products/playstation-5-tactics-ogre-reborn
PS4: https://www.jbhifi.com.au/products/playstation-4-tactics-ogr…

Decent price drop on a faily new release. Very niche game, one for those who liked Triangle Strategy. Not sure what is going on with those metacritic scores, it possibly got review bombed. Really looking forward to playing this one after watching a long time fan of the series absolutely gushing about the remake: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BvFNGt5lZ9Y

Was hoping for Amazon AU to price-match the Switch Version, but they appear to be out of stock.

  • Always room for cresps.

Come on ozbargains! Too much temptation.
I just picked up P5 Royal yesterday and now this… must be strong…

Same thought, would have been a tough choice if both on sale at the same time.

    • I think it's a good deal but unsure about future availability and pricing. I am not buying it but others will.

  • Tough game but when the battle is in your favour, it's very addicting.

  • Really been enjoying this on the PS5! took a little to get into but once I did I've been hooked.

  • A few negative reviews critical on a couple alterations and flaws while simultaneously lauding feature improvements

Anticipating FFT remaster which was previously leaked to release before the Tactics Ogre remaster

  • +1

If only steam would price match

  • Why the quick drop so quickly? Just because of Xmas?

It's a great (difficult) game but one of the best TRPG ever released.

    • i would think most people aren't into tactical rpgs and it wouldn't sell well in a physical store. I bought mine on steam.

      • Triangle Strategy just sold 1m copy, decent enough I'd say.

Fire Emblem sells really well generally as well.

They (JB) buy the stocks because they think it'd sell?

That's worldwide… and includes digital sales.

  • Does this run better than Triangle Strategy on Switch?

    • Depends what you mean by run better - visual wise TS is better with the 2D/3D graphic.

      • Performance-wise

Rather than a visualisation of someone running 🤣
        🏃💨
Or Labo vibrations physically running the Switch away

        • Reviews apparently see TO:R running at 60FPS on Switch - should be good then

Some funny anecdotes of PS5 input lag…

Would expect these classics [remastered] to run well. The ports for this seem to have not flopped!

        • TS ran pretty well on Switch. It only reached 30fps unlike the steam version but there weren't really any major frame drops unless there were a lot of field tile effects which was pretty rare

  • Seems like it's delivery only for the Switch version?

    • +1

A couple stores in Tassie and one in NSW left for C&C is what I can see. Otherwise you'll have to pay the delivery fee, which is $2 untracked with AusPost for my postcode, which isn't too bad.

  • Not review bombs, unfortunately they didn't get the pacing right and you will suffer the cruel mismatch in levels.

Tactics ogre is not friendly to those expecting something like FFT or Fire Emblem (lunatics excluded).

    • Good to know, just thought it was a little strange there were a lot of negative reviews and very few comments giving reasons. It does seem like an unforgiving game from what I've read.

      • Lol yea a lot of game overs and you can't level up to counter that.

I game overed against the final boss a few times and gave up but still enjoyed the game a lot.

        • That's rough, so you didn't finish it?

          • @DeToxin: Yes, not the very final boss. It was a 2 layered battle, beat the first one after dying a few times but found the second one too difficult and was too frustrated to keep trying.

    • I played other SRPGs (FE, TS, Disgaea, Phantom Brave, Wild Arms etc), but can't seem to enjoy Tactics Ogre. I'm still playing the game cus I'm waiting for one point where it just would click or something. I honestly find the game a bit too easy at times and you're just going through with the motion. What bugs me the most is probably how slow the game is? There seem to not be enough damage (counter attacks are a joke, you get pincer attacks only occasionally) and too many heals that negate your damage in that game which really prolongs the fight and not the fun. On the flip side it's nice to be able to go in for once and not die instantly (i.e. you dont have to turtle strategy) I guess.

    • I'm loving the game, but the balance definitely feels unfinished. They made significant changes which improve some things but broke others.

Bosses are particularly overtuned as they start heavily buffed. You can minimise this by lobbing some debuff items on them, but this feels restrictive.

The level capping isn't too bad against regular enemies since in most cases you have more abilities and more augmented gear.

Healing magic sucks badly to the point where you just won't bring a Cleric for a lot of fights. Items are way better and let you auto-restock character inventories after battles.

Finally much of the armour resistance is bugged. Elemental resistance on gear doesn't work at the moment. Hopefully they patch this.

On the other hand, you have lots of flexibility in team composition and even builds within the same class. Performance is (not surprisingly) solid AF and you can speed up opponents' turns. The voice acting is generally good and the original brilliant branching story is still there. A lot of love and a few mistakes make for an awesome if flawed game.

  • Is this just a remake of gba Tactics ogre on the new pixel art style?

damn it i purchased it two weeks ago for $64

    • Same… :(

      • If amazon, you can return. JB? you may try. HN? Play 100 hrs so that you may get value out of it

    • got it for $59 (with JB Perk) 2 weeks ago and they refunded me the difference today.
      only $20 though.. =(

      • Unlucky. It was a game I was expecting to run out of stock long before it would go on sale, I picked it up with the $80 ebay voucher deal.

        • but then other than Octopath, any Square Enix games that actually ran out of stock?

          • @tajid: True, Square Enix games have had good availability on switch. Although during preorders, I had heard this was going to have a low distribution and some smaller retailers had their orders cancelled. Seems like EB and JB had plenty of stock though.

Judging by how quickly this dropped in price, I doubt it sold very well so there might not be any reprints.

            • @wishcresp: Yup I ordered via DX Collectables and was cancelled for the reason you stated and one of the games I preordered. It was relatively short so finished (ex final boss) and sold it lol but I can see why you would thought it'd be limited!

        • i too bought it for this reason.
Did not expect it to go on sale anytime soon and JB stores near me were running down their stock.
Still, managed to get it for $39 so maybe others might have similar luck!

For anyone else interested in the steam reviews.

  • I loved FFT. Love this type of game from SQE

    • +1

I loved the original FFT too, but I couldn't get into this. Felt very tedious in my experience. Hard to differentiate between enemies and your party. I had to rename all characters to something similar/generic to make it easier.

Some of the bosses aren't tuned well and makes it a real grind to level up - currently up to chapter 3.

  • +1

Looks like it's sold out for Nintendo switch version.

  • Switch and PS5 are now out of stock.

EB has added it to their boxing day sale for $47 or $36 for preowned https://www.ebgames.com.au/search?q=Tactics+Ogre%3A+Reborn

    • Switch version still available in some stores e.g. Warringah Mall NSW, plus abundant stock of the PS4 versions.
