oh good for camping. thanks for sharin op

100 lumens is way too little.

      • +15

Too little for what? To find your little John?

      • +2

Depends on what you want it for, to read a book, anything brighter than 100 lumens and the reflection off the page is too bright for your reading pleasure. This headlamp also has a nice even spread of light, making it ideal for doing tasks like preparing a meal at night time at a picnic table.
You can even comfortably find your way home on a dark night walking in a forest with it. But if you like annoying your friends at night time while shining your headlamp in their face, yes you would need something a bit brighter. For those old enough the original Dolphin 6V krypton bulb torch was less than 100 lumens, you wouldn't want that strapped to your head!!

    • -1

bout as bright as a fire fly.

  • +1

    good price

  • +8

These are really poorly built so don't rely on them as your only source of light out in the bush. Mine only lasted a few days.

    • +4

You must have got a dud, they've been selling these for years & years.

How did the return process go?

      • +3

For $4 the hassle of returning it might not be worth it. I know I didn't bother returning mine when it only lasted a couple of months, I just wrote it off as a learning experience.

          • @WatchNerd: Seriously , waste more on petrol !
Look outside the box you live in ….

            • +2

@Murkymerv: of all the places I'd say bunnings is the best for b2b warranty as many people are down there at least once a month if not more…

I'm down there minimum twice a week.

            • +2

@Murkymerv: My local Bunnings is a 5 minute cycle away. No petrol needed.

            • +4

@Murkymerv: Unfortunately you'll have to hand in your Ozbargain membership too.

    • +3

understandable for the price. bought one for my mum last year and she's still using it (only indoors to read things in the dark). but i always have to change the batteries for her because the battery compartment latch is flimsy and hard for someone with dexterity limitations

      • My mum used to struggle with various lights while reading at night. Have you considered a Kindle with backlight? Changed her world.

        • mine would struggle to figure out a kindle. she mainly uses her light to read newspapers and her own paperwork.

    • +8

Must have got a dud. Can confirm used mine to light up the bush, instantly added 5,000 followers to my onlyfans…

    • +4

Mine still works, but it chews through the batteries when not in use, so I literally need to unclip the battery cap to store it, otherwise it's been pretty good for $4.

No idea why it would drain the batteries if not turned on. Feels like something is wrong with the circuit board design.

      • +1

battery drain when turned off seems to be a common problem with LED torches

I have had many - put in new batteries, nice and bright - put it on the shelf - come back a couple of months later - dead batteries

I'd love to know the reason - anyone ?

        • I imagine it's the same reason alkaline batteries tend to leak and destroy most modern torches - the on/off toggle is a digital switch, not a physical switch. Current is always powering some portion of the PCB/electronics.

      • Didn’t know this, good tip thanks

    • +2

Well you can't expect Swiss hand crafted @ $3.95. But I have 2 of these and the kids use them all the time, using the head straps
like a rubber band and shooting the whole headlamp into the night sky for a spectacular visual display, they've survived everything.
It's unfortunate yours only lasted a few days, I think that's an anomaly as both of mine have done 2+ years hard labour with no sign of giving in.

  • +23

If y'all haven't messed with modern LED flashlights (that albeit, start from a bit more than this, but there are decent aliexpress boi's around), you don't know what you're missing.

This one won't be too bright, but something modern that runs on an 18650 almost gets recoil.

    https://xkcd.com/1603/

    I warmly suggest reddit.com/r/flashlight

Get uh…. get that vowel wrong at your peril.

    • -2

Totally agree. This 100 lumens sucks go get one that runs on 18650s and your quality of life when you use a headlamp will be much much much better.

    • Get uh…. get that vowel wrong at your peril.

      😂😂😂

    • What would you recommend from aliexpress for a headlamp that won't blow the budget but is good quality with bright light?

      • +4

Headlamps are super useful. Having your hands free is under-rated even for working on the car etc until you try it.

List of lights here : https://www.reddit.com/r/flashlight/comments/vhvbz3/arbitrar…

One of the highest recommended "cheapies" is without a doubt the Skilhunt H04 series. Lots of options of tint and reflector, recharging or not, etc. Real bang for buck here, waterproof, recharging, etc. Go a "high CRI" or "Nichia" version, makes colours pop instead of be washed out.

https://www.liteshop.com.au/content/skilhunt-h04-rc-compact-… locally or about 30-40% cheaper via Ali with the wait. You pay a real "Aussie tax" for flashlights.

The others recommend from that thread

Skilhunt H04 - the popular version has a honeycomb TIR optic for a diffuse beam pattern. A reflector for more throw and a version with a reflector and a flip-out diffuser are available. Uses a timed stepdown. Available in neutral white. Magnetic tailcap. These now offer a high-CRI 519A (recommended) or LH351D option, making it considerably more competitive. $43, or $52 for the RC version with magnetic charging. Battery not included by default, but Skilhunt and dealers usually add one for less than $10.
Sofirn SP40 (with LH351D) - high CRI, USB charging, a choice of color temperatures and a battery included for the price is pretty compelling. There's even an 18350 tube to make it smaller, but only the 18650 battery is included. The -A model uses a TIR optic, but a lack of reviews has me holding off on recommending that yet. The other options on the list have advantages, but you'll pay for them. $28
Zebralight H600Fd IV - very compact, neutral white, great efficiency, well-regarded user interface, boost driver. What's not to love? The pocket clip isn't so good. 90+ CRI, a frosted lens for a more diffuse beam and a slightly cooler neutral tint that's a close match for the midday sun. H600d for non-frosted and a little more throw. $89
Zebralight H600Fc IV - the H600Fd, but with warmer tint, like the late afternoon sun. $89
Armytek Wizard C2 Pro Nichia 144A - 1x18650 right-angle light with a beautiful high-CRI neutral white emitter, boost driver for stable output, magnetic tailcap, magnetic charging, and excellent low mode. I pushed for this light's creation, so I'm biased, but I do think it's excellent. The manufacturer, however is not, and I recommend ordering from Killzone in the US to avoid customer service and shipping problems. Try coupon code "reddit" for a discount. $90

There's also a massive range of different LED's available in the same slim tube without some features (like a usb port) available very cheaply, if you search aliexpress for "convoy s2". As long as you're happy to charge batteries externally (or buy some of the ones with a built in USB port).

        • +1

Thanks for the expert opinion. I would be interested in the first two, Sofirn SP40 and Skilhunt H04. What is your opinion of the Wurkkos HD15? I have some J5 Tactical V1's from years ago but the lack of headband is not ideal.

          • +2

@patrick321: The wurkkos are also highly recommended. That said : I'm also a member of the SES with a spot/flood headlight, and frankly, unless you're doing a lot of widely varying tasks you probably don't "need" both.

If you're using a right angle as a headlight, how often are you trying to see 50 metres away? Do you need the spot? Probably not. A fairly floody emitter or something that's bit of a 50/50 will probably do the trick. There's also such a thing as "too" floody that can be fairly functionally useless beyond 5 metres. And trying to learn the user interface on a 1-button light with 2 emmiters can be pain. I much prefer just hitting "on, higher, higher, off" type deal so when I need light, I get light, and don't have to think much.

I personally keep a dual-emitter light on my helmet because yes, sometimes I am trying to see 50 metres. But the vast majority of the time I'm not, and for domestic/walking/camping I'd just go a simple, single emitter, semi floody thing like that orange peel h04.

Anyway, there's a great review of that light here https://zeroair.org/2022/02/03/wurkkos-hd15-headlamp-review/

That site has a lot of great info.

I'm starting to move away from USB ports covered by dicky flaps though, prefer the versions that are hidden under a screw down cover and behind an o-ring, like on this wurkkos : https://wurkkos.com/products/d25s-waterproof-headlamp-18650-…

  • +2

I most enjoy the flashing mode, it's just so useful.

    • On a bike maybe for nighttime riding? If it's backwards. Or mounted somewhere else.

      • +4

I don't recommend riding backwards at night time.

        • +2

          What about day time?

    • It saved my life when I was stuck in the desert and I was able to point it towards the plane searching for me.

      • +5

The plane would have had to be flying at a height of no more than 2ft.

    • I wonder if one manufacturer ever comes up with the idea of making one without the flashing mode, they might really clean up. I'd certainly pay extra.

  • +13
    • Wow most stores in QLD have 0 it seems. But Newstead has 567?

      • No daylight savings = no torch required

  • ant them normally like 4.99?

    • +5

      Ants don't have money

      • +1

yeah when I arst my ant she niver gave me any

    • I bought a twin pack for $2 about 6 months ago. That was more of a right place/right time thing though

  • +1

    thank you

don't need it now but ordered one anyway

might come handy in the future

    • +5

Good to see you obeying the 1st rule of Ozbargain.

      • +2

        Good to see you

Good to see you in the dark

  • +3

I use these when i inspect tunnels for work. Can confirm these are pretty good for being $3.95!!
Pair them with clips for hard hats purchased on amazon (aliexpress if you can afford to wait) for like 5$!

    • What kind of batteries do you use, rechargeable ones good with this?

  • 100lumens is not bright enough

    • +5

Buy 2 which will make it 200 lumens.

      • Might be tricky to wear both of them at the same time.

        • Combining with the above hat idea I'm tempted to try hot glueing a few onto an old baseball cap …

  • +1

I've had some of these for a while. they are below-average quality. but good value for $4 .

  • +5

    120lumens

though they might drop off your head while u are running for your life.

  • +4

These are superb. I am using mine for nearly 3 years.
I have used it for many tasks in attic, sub-floor or for garden-work. Keeps my hands-free.
Provides very bright illumination for local work. Obviously they are not torch, so do no provide long range focussed beam.
But for any other work, they are must have. Just keep it paired with 3 rechargeable batteries & you are sorted.

    • +2

Have to agree, they work great for the crawl space or working in the garden late or camping. Haven't had to trek with these but have been plenty happy for $3.95.

  • +1

Good for working on the car

  • Closest in store is 40 KMs away :(

Still good deal for those with stock close by.

  • +11

    …at Bunnings HQ:
“Hey mate those Arlec head torches are starting to pile up”
“No worries just shave $1 off the price and all the OzBargainers will snap them up again”
    😂

    • Lol. I thought these retail close to $10.

  • Has anyone successfully changed the batteries in these? I broke my clip trying to change mine

    • common problem, go get a refund

    • yeah a few times. i did read the reviews beforehand so knew about the dodgy battery latch.

  • +1

getting into our building roofspace with a headlamp was a nice dream compared to holding a torch in one hand while trying to grab a rafter with another while trying to hold onto some tools with my third hand (uh)

I got an Aldi one with a hinged bottom (120 lumen, maybe $10?) so the light could be angled down for handiwork or up for a more distant view

anyhoo - for occasional use in a dark roofspace where you need two hands free - this type of headlamp is great

    • Yep, have the aldi one too, and the hinge is really useful!

  • These were probably really designed for fishing, camping ,under the car or crawling around a roof space. Not for reading at night. For $4 what are you expecting ,mines been used loads while fishing and still going strong. A cup of coffee costs more and is gone in 10 minutes, what is everyone really winging about FFS.

  • how does this compare with my Ledlenser H19R-C Headlamp

    • $356.04 cheaper than LedLenser one

      • but the lenser blinds well round the campfire LMAO :D :D :D

  • the battery door will snap off at the first drop, be careful.

    • …that's when duct tape is for :p

  • +1

Can't believe I tried to fix my old one.

    • There you go…a pat on the back for your effort in saving the planet…

    • nothing wrong with that if you learned something along the way
