  • Waiting for Amex to KrisFlyer 20% transfer bonus. There was one December last year.

    • It’s rare for KrisFlyer, but here’s hoping.

with or without a hole in the bottom ?

    • Was it 15%?

Seems to be targeted, seeing the usual $5/1000 points here

    • Hopefully it pops up for you. I didn't have to activate this one

    • It is definitely targeted. I have a few cards and only some of them have this bonus offer.

  • Easier to use up the points.

    Nope… Normal points for me…

  • Yep I got it… Not a bad offer all things considered. But would prefer to take flights.

    • Your comment has got me thinking… Does Amex travel worth buying airfares from or are you talking about velocity rewards discounted conversion or can you use membership rewards elsewhere too? I'm tossing between approx. $500 credit to future cheap flights (if it's worth). I normally buy direct using QFF classic rewards and Velocity Rewards, which is fairly a good value.

      • i think it is better to convert to Krisflyer/Asia Miles

If you do the math on how to get the most money from your Amex reward points, it's always better transferring them to an airline programme and buying business class airfares. You can't transfer to Qantas unless you have a Qantas Amex in which case your points are automatically transferred each month. My go to points transfer airline is typically Singapore Airlines, but occasionally if I'm short points for a domestic flight, I'll transfer some to Virgin Australia.

You can use your Amex points now to pay off almost anything on your card, but the exchange rate is balls in comparison to what you'd get out of airline frequent flyer point transfers and flight redemptions. A saver return flight to Singapore from Perth business class is 81k KF. This is 162k Amex points. Using the numbers above, if you've been targeted, then that's worth $1215, if not targeted, then $810. That flight is ballpark anywhere from $3.5-$6k. The only thing you need to keep in mind with Singapore Airlines flight redemptions is that you really need to book 8-11 months in advance so you can get guaranteed bookings. If you can't plan that far in advance, then you'll probably have more success with Virgin Australia.

Amex Travel is like any other travel agent … they'll book whatever you want through whoever they can find cheapest and charge you the agreed amount. I generally don't use them for anything except for spending my annual travel credit that I get on my Amex (if you don't spend it annually, you lose it). I went to NZ recently and booked a 2 night stay at one of the Quest apartments using Amex Travel to get rid of my annual travel credit. They booked it through Expedia rather than direct with the hotel itself.

Also keep in mind if you book a flight with Amex Travel, you have to deal with Amex Travel directly if you need to change any of the flight details (and they have change fees in addition to the airline fees). This can be a real pita in comparison to dealing directly with the airline. I was at Christchurch airport travelling back home to Perth on 20 March 2020 when the airport was chaos due to borders all closing. There were people everywhere trying to get on flights and the airline representatives were on megaphones walking around saying if you have booked through a travel agent, we cannot help you … you must contact your travel agent to change your flight.

My advice, keep saving up your Amex points until you have enough points for a flight redemption with an airline programme. Don't be tempted to trade them in for credit on other things at a quarter of their value. If you plan to use Singapore Airlines Krisflyer, also keep in mind points expire in their programme after 3 years - so don't transfer them until you're about ready to redeem.

I almost completely agree with Nathanos. Variation; you can transfer you QANTAS points if you have Amex platinum charge; but I find QANTAS redemptions utter trash in terms of value and availability.
Secondly, I regularly book via AMEX travel. Have found their agents brilliant in ensuring refunds. I'm early days of pandemic got full refund from cruise lines and airfares when others who voted direct waited excessive months or in some cases didn't get refunds. Similarly, was in the USA when Lehman Bros collapsed and there were several domestic airline collapses at the same time. AMEX travel simply went to work to solve my problem and get me on alternative carriers; and got me charge backs on my list tickets.
Ultimately however, my best experience with points had been with Asia Miles, aka Cathay Pacific or Singapore.

        • Why is Virgin better for booking?

I booked my Singapore business return 11 months ahead, but I had to fly into Paris. I'm flying out of Amsterdam, and have a 20 hour layover.

Nothing is easy about booking with points for business, let alone first.

  • Nope… still 200 points per dollar here.

  • Looks like it's a targeted offer.

Effectively selling frequent flyer points (of all the important currencies to us in Australia) at 1.5c.
Well above what I'd pay for them, but less than what I try to make them worth to redeem.

If you usually convert points for economy flights this might tip over into being worthwhile (after all, cash is the most flexible rewards program!).

    (Terrible joke incoming)

Personally I transfer to Krisflyer for Bus Class redemptions (been saving for a while)

    Bus class…that’s coach, right?

(Sorry, had to see that in text to scratch the itch. I’m done now)

  • Just redeemed 400000 points. Thought it's better to have money in the bank than having to spend time to chase high $/p redemption opportunities.

  • Seems to be weirdly targetted….my wife's explorer got it (she has 100000 pts), but mine didn't (same card with 400000 pts)

  • Anyone ever have success asking livechat to give them the same offer, or will it fall on deaf ears?

  • +1

Thanks op, I had seen offer but didn't fully understand what it implied. I have around 92500. will redeem for purchases (around $695 off)

    • Where did you see it? I have an Explorer, I can't find find anything about bonus points when transferring?

      • I can’t remember sorry, I just remembered they did target me and when checking the better rate came up.

  • So with the whole using points for miles thing being better value. I got here melbourne to singapore for $986 return, to upgrade to business I need 117k points, which is 234k in amex points, which if I just did a straight points of dollar 234k be worth $1170? Why wouldn't I want to do that?

In any case, if I don't value business class, why would I spend any points on upgrading the seat?

    • +3

You don't use to Upgrade, you use to book.

I used 236k points for RETURN BUSINESS to Europe from Adelaide plus $200 in taxes.

      • What route and airline was this and how long ago pls?

  • How do I check if the offer applies to my account?

    • Login to AMEX 'My Account' then click 'use points for charges' on the right.

Not sure how people are seeing this as value, much better to redeem points for flights with virgin/qantas or I’ve found great value in transferring to Marriott points

Last trip was a booking at Residence inn LA, cash price for 6 nights $4991, I booked for 166,000 Amex points (Marriott had 50% bonus so 1:1 on points transferred)

    • +1

I agree you will find better redemption with flights. As mentioned, may help for some

    • My mate paid $1,200 in taxes vs me paying $200
      QFF is great value LOL

      • for what? Why was there a difference?

        • Qff has way higher taxes on booking reward flights

    • Im keen to try and use the Marriott points for a family stay somewhere…any tips as to where to find good value? Flights are great when its for 1 or 2 adults, but when you have 3 kids its tough!

      • It's tricky with the family. I looked at switching point to velocity and booking the family to Bali. Works out better to pay for the flights and use the points to pay the bill for it. The best redemption in Business class to Europe. I booked Brisbane to London Bus class return on SQ.
i started looking at Marriott using points, but the redemption doesn't look great at all
