I've run out of matches, are these a good substitute?

    • +2

Only if you don't plug the power cable in properly.

      • +1

"Hey guys, should we try and squeeze double the power down a quarter-sized connector, and not make it idiot-proof?"

"Sure! Make sure to blame the customer. Also, charge them double. That'll teach 'em"

Can someone buy me this please? Thanks!

      Me 2.

Both 4080 and 7900 xtx seem meh value ATM…

    • +5

I feel for those who thought they could get a better deal waiting for AMD's offerings.

      • +8

I don't. I copped it for suggesting false hopes.

Likewise old models don't seem as badly priced now.

        100w on desktop idling. Absurd.

        • +1

          100w on desktop idling

This sounded so crazy to me that I had to google it and found this: https://www.techpowerup.com/review/amd-radeon-rx-7900-xt/37.…

It really is weird that during idling with multiple monitors and video playback, its power usage is so much higher than everything else.

        • Glad I caved to pressure and got a 6700 XT.

        • I'm with you, I honestly had no idea what people expected price wise given both "teams" are selling as many as they make.

          • +1

@drprox: People legitimately thought AMD was in the business of helping them out… Surely the overpriced 7xxx CPUs were a huge hint. They got complacent too.

Like when the 30 series came out, people shouldn't have fire sale their 2080tis….

            People have incredibly short memories.

Now the older generation cards are getting harder to find at good prices and it's repeated…

Also heard they won't have much stock in Europe, and maybe other markets too.

      • +1

my only hope for it was Productivity performance that was relative to the price, they improved in dvr, but in blender a 7900xtx only just slightly to a 3080, a card that has sold for $999. 7000 series will be great for sffpc gamers and gamers alike, but amd's neglect of the productivity space just makes nvidia the better choice for me

        • As far as the SFF benefit….

I'm skeptical of that. Surely AIB partners will just use the same over engineered coolers that'll kill any benefit?

  • +12

Looks like a better card here for the same price. Also come with 3 year local warranty

    https://www.jw.com.au/asus-tuf-rtx-4080-16gb-graphics-card-6…

    • Depends - if u want a smaller card, phoenix is the better option.

    Thanks bought 5.

Has more ram than a base model macbook air :)

Ridiculous price for a 2nd tier card..

7900XTX reviews coming out saying better than 4080 in everything other than Ray tracing.

    • -2

      7900 XTX on average 0.5% faster than RTX 4080 @ 1440p.

      7900 XTX on average 3.5% faster than RTX 4080 @ 4k.

Far cry from what it was hyped up to be.

      • +5

US $200 cheaper for same performance. What's so bad about that?

        • -2

US $200 cheaper for same performance. What's so bad about that?

It has a US $200 lower RRP for the same rasterization performance.

They hyped the 7900 XTX as being closer in performance to a RTX 4090, but as it turns out it's actually much closer (if not almost identical) in performance to a RTX 4080.

Based on what we had seen on AMD slides prior to review embargo being lifted the 7900 XTX looked like an absolute steal at US $999. Now, the RTX 4080 with better RT, DLSS 3.0 and 17% lower power consumption on average is actually looking like a pretty decent buy at an only US $200 higher RRP.

I'm not saying that 7900 XTX is a shit card or anything like that. Just that we've been deceived again and it's not even close to what people were expecting.

Will be interesting to see what that US $200 difference translates to here considering that 4080's are already available ~10% below the Australian RRP.

          • +2

@HomeAlone: Actually AMD has always said it was an RTX 4080 competitor so AMD were honest. They never said it would be an RTX 4090 so perhaps your expectations haven't been met.

            Mine have.

Agreed though that the RT performance isn't up to par.

            • -1

              @Homerlovesbeer:

Actually AMD has always said it was an RTX 4080 competitor so AMD were honest.

Always? Don't you mean they said that once and never again?

They did a ~45 minute launch event/livestream on their own YouTube channel where they compared it to a 6950 XT. From that data it could be extrapolated that the performance would be within 10-15% of a 4090 and they released various slides which supported this.

Then in a PC World video interview they mentioned that it would be competing against the 4080 even though everything else they had shown us suggested otherwise.

When someone lies to you a bunch of times through their own official sites/channels and then hides the truth in some random interview do you really believe that makes them honest?

              • @HomeAlone: Jesus ok, you really are worked up over this aren't you. Pretty much every review I've watched (Hardware Unboxed, Gamers Nexus, hardware Canucks etc) all indicated it was NOT a competitor for the 4090 but for the 4080.

I wish it was a 4090 competitor for under 4080 money but unfortunately it isn't.

                • -1

                  @Homerlovesbeer:

Jesus ok, you really are worked up over this aren't you.

Not at all. I'm just home alone.

Pretty much every review I've watched (Hardware Unboxed, Gamers Nexus, hardware Canucks etc) all indicated it was NOT a competitor for the 4090 but for the 4080.

You said "AMD has always said it was an RTX 4080 competitor".

As far as I'm aware those are independent reviewers. They are not owned by or part of AMD.

And of course they are all saying that now after having benchmarked it.

If they add the same GST + extra Australia tax as they did with the 6900 XT then after factoring in the current exchange rate we could be looking at ~$1863 here. Perhaps a bit cheaper for reference edition if we get a limited batch of them at launch like last time.

Only a few hours to go so we'll find out soon enough whether this is worth considering over the 4080.

I wish it was a 4090 competitor for under 4080 money but unfortunately it isn't.

Just to be clear I never claimed it was meant to be a 4090 competitor. I said closer in performance to 4090, as opposed to what it turned out to be, which is closer (if not almost identical) in performance to a 4080.

            • @Homerlovesbeer: @Homerlovesbeer nope. "up to 1.8x uplift" is nothing but deceiving even for marketing standards. what we really got was (quoting HUB) a 30% to at best 40% uplift over previous generation. nothing close to the 50%-80% being touted by AMD. XTX and XT are a let down. It is at face value better than 4080 for pure cost per raster, but what, 4080 has better stability, encode, power consumption, ray tracing, for $200 more. I think $200 is a fair price to pay for that. but then we get back to the fact that 4080 is terribly priced anyways. imho XTX and XT are horrible value for what they are, plain raster machines.

      • +2

yeah but its good for the market, will force nvidia to drop prices and/or push out 4070 range gpu.

for most people, right now $200usd is not worth it for the ray tracing performance - anyone who plays games online will always opt for the FPS over having their games look nicer.

      • +3

It's was only really hyped up by Youtubers, like Gamer Meld, who had no idea of the performance. AMD always said it was competing with a 4080. There are also outliers like MW2 and Assassin's Creed where raster performance is better than a 4090 at 4k.Will see if the driver's age like fine wine.

        • -1

AMD always said it was competing with a 4080.

AMD only ever said* it was competing with a 4080, but they left it as late as possible to do so.

    • its only just better than the 3080 in blender

    • XTX better be $1600 AUD, not the $2200+ that we can all imagine.

      • well corporations do love price gouging
been a distinct lack of actual 7900xt cards at launch anyway

  • +5

Get ready to watch the weak willed clear them out of stock. Jensen has them hook line and sinker.

    • +5

I'm not sure, the 4080 has been an exceptionally unpopular card, for obvious reasons. Will see what happens.

      • True but I think $2000 will test what willpower they have.

        • -4

you will never see $500 xx80 series card ever again. there's new price baseline after covid.

everyone just need to suck up with it.

          • -4

@[Deactivated]: lol give it a rest non-lhr jnr

I've never spent over $400 on a gpu in my life and I don't have to suck up anything. My $349 1080ti equivalent will do me for years. Only losers with small man syndrome need a 49 4k inch tv planted on their desk. You don't even get increased FOV it's a complete waste of money. It's eyefinity without the bars lol

            • +1

@Jimmy77: lol is that actually him, now that mention it it doe seem like it might be an alt of his

              • +1

@purplebangle: lol think so. Although this iteration seems slightly more passive than the last. Maybe it's become self aware it's a one man army

            • @Jimmy77: you sounded a lot like homer jnr, he's also using 1080 tee eye

              • +1

@[Deactivated]: LOL he's back!! You're fighting a lone war here my friend.

Demand for gpu's is dropping fast it must be tearing you apart inside!

                • +1

                  @Jimmy77: where's edfoo? who's back? arnie?

                • +1

@Jimmy77: Hot damn you're probably right! Whelp looks like he's back, the man, the legend, (and penalty box enthusiast) gotta get me some popcorn.

    • from what ive seen anyone buying 40 series is getting 4090 or waiting till 4060/70/etc, im just gonna get a 3080 either prewaterblocked or waterblocked myself

  • The heat has really come out of the market for these things.

Although not the power connector apparently…

    • heymix 4080

  • +6

I would only consider a 4090 at 2k. If not i'll keep running my 3080

  • +4

    HODL, 1600 is my target

  • +2

JW is selling the Asus TUF 4080 for the same price, would that also be a nicer deal?

    • Isn't that 2200 and this 1999?

  • +1

Can this help me get 144Hz on 4K for my favorite FPS game Nekopara?

    • +1

      A different kind of shooter…

  • +7

$1000 is always my target for GPU.

  • Any chance of some more 3060 Tis again for Christmas?

    • -1

no tee eye, but you'll get rib-eye

  • none of the "next-gen" graphics cards have really been that great, think ill try and find a good price on a waterblocked 3080 and go with that

  • Are these dropping because sales have been poor on the 4080 and because people are sick of paying the NVIDIA tax

    • i think its specifically the pricing thats been the main motivator, specifically when compared to the 4090

    • Edit

  • Never buy latest gen.. Remember no new gen

  • +1

    Would pay $1250 max for a RTX4080

  • +2

no deal, these top of the line cards should be no more than 1k,

    • Yeah in a perfect world they should be. But that's no reason to neg the deal.
If they came down to $1000, you'd still whinge that it should be sub $500 and still neg the deal. If it's out of your budget, don't buy one. Simple.

  • +1

I just checked in to laugh at them being out of stock. Are people struggling with rents or something?

    • +2

Can't afford rent but can afford Golf R's, 4090's and avocado's….

  • how good is AMD marketing… 8K gaming 7900 XTX. lol

  • can't find the card without this link, recommend adding it to the components page with the 4090 so others might find it.
