anyone else get the feeling that mitre 10 will be filing for bankruptcy soon?

    • +6

      Before Christmas, 20% off, dicksmith

    • +1

10/10 chances of bankruptcy, every time.

    • +8

Nope, building supply companies have done insanely well throughout the building boom (supply shortage) of the last couple of years. Mitre 10 stores are largely individually owned (all though Mitre 10 have began buying their stores lately).

But it would be terrible for consumers if Bunnings was the only major building supply business.

      • +1

Their costs went up, and they had to choose what/when/where they could pass it on. Builders have contract rates, which help avoid the raises for a while, at the cost of the store’s profits.

At least in Victoria… Builds have ground to a halt, cashflow is wrecked. Everyone is COOKED. From sales to settlement, everyone is just grinding through.

        • I see plenty of builds plowing on in the northern suburbs.

          • @serpserpserp: Overall, it appears that way.
I live & work in a greenfields estate/s. Supervise greenfields & KDR. We’re constantly noting which builder & builds-in-particular have simply stopped. Epic quantities sold during lockdowns, take a while to get shoved in the pipeline, finally break ground… plus many other bizarre new issues. Now we’re all fighting each other for labour & materials. First Concreters & foam for slabs. Then framer’s, so their rates skyrocketed month after month. So each builder constantly waiting until they can’t any more, and cave-in at a higher-again rate. Same for steel, scaffold/fall-protection, then batts, plaster… it’s a (business) life or death traffic jam.

        • Initially yes but that become quite easy when they could sell full b-double loads of timber before it even hit the store, it essentially become a bidding war, eg yes we can give you x amount of packs at the contracted rate but if paid x price then we can give you more packs.
Subbies and building supply's were the 2 big winners out of this crazy industry over the last 36 months.
Builds haven't grinded to a halt in Vic, they are just returning to pre pandemic levels which was still a bit of a boom in itself, hasn't stopped timber prices from going up 5% more in February.

          • @donkcat: I’m curious what builders you’re watching. We have constant group chat discussions of misery, with management/supervisors we’ve worked with over the journey.
But we’re used to ZERO wasted time onsite. It looks like they’re being shoved. But they’re simply ultra efficient schedules. 4.5mths from slab to settlement, regardless of size/inclusions was standard, with our eyes closed. Now EVERY single step needs endless involvement & monitoring.

All the great suppliers have gone to sht. And the bad ones are almost micromanaged, constant support to keep their heads up.

            • @Ulysses31: Not disagreeing with any of that, it sounds like the last 24 months, just pointing out that subbies and suppliers largely have been the big winners, those who aren't on fixed contracts, and yes they too have had a stressful time of it but without the same financial stresses most builders have experienced. I was only talking to one of our best clients last week, they were building a huge house on a rural property, still a standard build type house but massive with all the upgraded inclusions. He budgeted 30k for the framer, well his bill come in at 90k, that's not fit out either, that's just up to roof on.

Maybe you know more but the talk of Metricon going under seems to have cooled which is good, they just about would have brought the whole industry down with them.

    • The Master died a long time age, why mitre 10 still here?

    • +1

Crazy Talk, all the Mitre10 stores i know of have been raking the cash in some might say obscenely so, also Mitre10 members can always and easily get refunds and never need a receipt like BUNNINGS whose receipts notoriously become unreadable due to fading far to quickly.

      • The dollars are huge, but we don’t know their profit levels. And businesses often go-under when things are booming.
Happened at 2 I’ve worked for. Massive amounts of money out, and couldn’t get it back in again (in time). Like a bad case of speed wobbles.

  • The asterisks next to 20% off suggests there will be some sort of terms and conditions. Hopefully it’s just the fact that it is in store only.

    • +10

Basically can't use it to pay off an account. Max $1k per person. Participating stores only. Can't use it the same day as purchase. Got one yesterday. I'm going to m10 today to grab what I need.

      • +2

Awesome! Glad we could assist you

        • My local M10 has been a pleasure to deal with, Devonport Tas btw. Just offer a better price on wood pellets by the pallet (66 bags) instead of 10+ bag pricing and I'd marry you guys ;-)

      • Also in store only. Can't be used for online purchases.

  • Is this genuine ?

    Doesn’t pop up for me

    • +5

Mitre 10 in the ad is spelt incorrectly but it must be legit if it was seen on Facebook.

      • +1

If it's on FB ot must be true! Facebook is gospel lmfao

    • +1

10% for all Victorian Home Hardware and Mitre 10, 20% for Tasmanian stores

  • +1

Mitre10 going the same way as Masters?

    • +2

Possible but it's worth noting that masters was wound up in an orderly way because it was part of the Woolies group. As posted below, mitre 10 is party of the Metcash group so hopefully that adds some risk mitigation

      • Agreed. Metcash have actually been growing quite well lately so would be surprised if it was starting to suffer.

    • +1

Mitre does not open stores exactly opposite Bunnings.

  • Administration?

  • Mitre 10 is part of the Metcash parent company (IGAs) and is not an isolated entity. It would be pretty unusual for it to go into administration without affecting the whole umbrella.

    • Couldn't Mitre 10 break off from Metcash, like Drakes supermarkets did in South Australia?

      • How can a subsidiary break off from it's parent company unless it was bought out in which case it would need to go through Metcash management and board first.

        • I think because you can own IGA stores. Mr Drake got sick of IGA so he converted all of his stores into his own thing and built his own distribution centre. The new Drakes are much cleaner and modern than the old "Drake's Foodland" stores were, in SA it seems a lot of IGAs are branded as Foodland. I'm sure someone will chime in and correct all of this.

Mitre 10 stores probably aren't owned by individuals so it may not be an option. But it's too famous a brand to let die. if Metcash can't work it and doesn't want it, then someone else would buy it surely.

          • @AustriaBargain: Sadly, that’s exactly what happened to the Danks group, who had the Thrifty Link and Home Hardware brands. They were bought out by Woolworths, and we all know what happened there…I had a friend who owned a very successful Thrifty Link through the whole saga and he got burnt badly.

            • +1

@Chazzozz: Home Hardware is Mitre 10 related

              • +1

@mapax: Yep, they are now, but they started out with Danks. See the potted history at Wikipedia. I have a friend who worked at Danks on the wholesale side back in the 90s, and he said it was a great model with a thriving business, but antiquated and top-heavy admin practices. He reckons if they could have modernised then it would’ve held off the buyout by Woolies.

          • @AustriaBargain: Kogan takeover?

        • +1

That's the whole point of having pty ltd companies under a holding (which is what Metcash is); protecting the group from the bankruptcy of its subsidiaries.

  • +2

    can we use online?

    • +1

      No

  • Came into a Mitre10 near my place a while back and there was no customer in the store. There were 3 Sales too busy talking to even come and ask what I am looking for. Never set foot into any other Mitre10 after that. And no surprised, that store closed after 1 year.

    • That happened to me too, i never wanted to go back there, took over 30 mins to buy 1 bale of hay. There were more than double the number staff to customers which was only 2 or 3

    • +10

My experience is the exact opposite - Mitre 10 staff are really helpful and knowledgeable and normally I can get in and out pretty quickly. But their prices are slightly higher than Hammerbarn and their range is considerably smaller for most stuff.

      • Yep I miss my one having moved now to a town with no hardware store!

        • Then I suspect you don't live in Melbourne as your profile suggests.

          • +1

@MS Paint: I sure don't, I honestly thought everyone left during the covid zombie apocalypse..was I wrong? Is it safe to return?

            • @drprox: Not sure. I live regional also.

              • @MS Paint: Funny enough I'm part of the exodus too - I had a Bunnings 400m from me in Melbourne, the closest one to me now is about 6km away. Mitre 10/Home Hardware are much closer.

                • @Moondog: All the local people will tell you how they hate Bunnings and where to get stuff from local businesses at lower prices. 🙂

    • Then don’t try a Bunnings. Last week was the first time in years I’ve found staff, let-alone useful ones. But look-around… every industry is like that at times. Labour shortages are real, and everyone is done for the year.

      • +1

Bunnings is pretty much always like that, though. Someone came up and helped me yesterday in Bunnings and I almost had to take a selfie to remember the moment.

  • +5

Ad is real. Here is the ad library link.

    https://www.facebook.com/ads/library/?id=1141345233420874

    • +1

Nice work. Didn’t know there was a way to search ads.

  • +1

Why does the link take you to Tasmania stores? Is it just for TAS?

    • +1

That's what I thought. I'm in Tas and grabbed one yesterday.

  • Can anyone confirm if available for VIC? Mitre 10 stores are all double the bunning distances where i live and i dont want to travel all the way just to get rejected lol.

    • +2

      Ring them?
      .

      • Peakhurst NSW store said no discounted gift cards.

    • +1

10% available for Home Hardware and Mitre 10 stores in VIC

  • I got the exact same ad in an email, but only 10% off. Curious

    • +1

10% for all Victorian Home Hardware and Mitre 10, 20% is for Tasmanian stores only

  • Sorell, TAS store says on their FB gift card sale extended to 24 December

  • +7

    Mitre 10 are a joke.

Their online prices are different to their in store prices.

I went in to buy some plumbing wrenches after seeing them online for a reasonable price. Couldn't wait for click and collect so I opted to just go in and buy them.

When I took them to the checkout they scanned at 20% more expensive than the online price.

I was told I'd have to order and pay online to get the online price.

So be wary of saving 20% on their gift cards when they slug you 20% extra to buy items in store

    • +1

Similar happened to me. Item was 40-50% discount for a New Year sale but only store with stock was hours away from where I live, fortunately I was minutes away from that store on the way home from a friends house. When I went to pay I was told online is technically a different store and paying online for click and collect was the only way to get that price but I would probably have to wait a couple of hours.

      • Bowens have manager/store promotions they can run, too. Not valid anywhere else. Sounds like a similar thing.

        • +1

Yeah lots of retailers are like that. I had an experience where I tried to return something I bought online to a store and they couldn’t process it because the online store is run by a different group and are on a different system.

  • Holy moly I haven’t heard of mitre 10 since … the mid 90s?

  • +1

Wonder what the terms and conditions are. My local is a Webber premium agent, sell Stihl products and Mitre 10 are an EGO supplier but you have to get it ordered in i think.

    • This. There are a few Weber Specialist dealers which have access to the premium ranges so 20% of those would be great.

    • +1

Gift cards can be used across those products

  • +1

Hard pass on this. Firesale discount on gift cards just screams that the company is on the brink of collapse.

  • +2

Also note you can't use more than one gift card per transaction.

    • +1

This is incorrect, in store you can stack your gift cards without a problem

  • Does anyone know if Mitre 10 price match Sydney Tools? Looking at getting a table saw but it's $200 more at Mitre 10 which would wipe out the 20% discount on gift cards.

  • +4

Checked about 10 different VIC mitre 10 stores Facebook pages and the gift cards are all 10% off. I imagine the 20% could be store specific and maybe only certain states

    • +1

10% for all Victorian Home Hardware and Mitre 10, 20% is just for Tasmanian stores

  • +1

If it’s like iga then each store is just a franchisee? Then they could tell you nah rules don’t apply to know. You can complain and call head office but that’s so much extra work and emotional stress. No wonder bunnings is just unbeatable.

    • +1

Even though Bunnings are handy for a larger store, more variety, i've found over the years their timber quality is absolute shite. Part of it is the way it is stored and basically chucked on the racks. Twists, bows, a LOT of knots in timber that shouldn't even have knots. Mitre 10, masters and a few independant suppliers have much better quality timber at only a fraction of the cost more.

      • +1

This is absolutely true - their timber is rubbish. I'm about to order a heap of plywood to line a shed and the local timber bloke is competitive on price and has a much better quality product.

        • +1

I guess it is true and timber price is also cheaper at your local supplier but really how many of your average DIY or mum and pop is gonna be bothered or even know.

          • @Frozensage: Well they won't know until someone says something. Pass the knowledge on, share it. It's how trades are taught and handed down… same goes for marketing sales on all items in all shops.
It is truly day and night difference in timber quality once you see it. Plus, timber isn't cheap these days. Wanna get quality to make that job last longer

      • You know I never noticed it but now I do when you mention it. I Was in Bunnings a couple of months ago and was looking for a bit of pine and took me ages to find a straight bit. That wasn’t the first time. Thought I was being a big fusspot. But I’ve never had that at Mitre 10 / Home Hardware where I go more frequently.

        • Maybe it depends on volume, like a good butcher. Longer it hangs-around, the worse it gets. And the more they buy, the better they get.

Guys running the timber yard at our supplier have invited us years ago, to watch them split packs - and watch them all go twang. Had to supply 50 new studs at lockup, to replace knackered ones from frame. That’s mainly when supply dropped back to F5, due to lack of MGP10.

It’s all screened & rated. Not sure how people complain about knots etc

  • Looked on Facebook and can only see the 20% gift card offer at Clennett's and Becks Tasmania stores.
Probably lucky for me as most likely about to go belly up.

    • 10% for all Victorian Home Hardware and Mitre 10, 20% is just for Tasmanian stores
