  • is the 240mm aio recommended?

    • +3

      no its a 12400f, save the $

    • +6

It is recommended if you upgrade the CPU to the i7, the PC will be ok with standard cooling on an i5 12400F. But it is still nice to have the 240 if you want to upgrade down the track.

    • +8

There is not much more upgrade options for the 12th gen and 13th gen platform. 14th gen will use a new motherboard.
12400 doesn't use much power, and is plenty for current games.
In term of cooler, even stock cooler is fine. U can undervolt the CPU anyway to reduce heat.
U can get 240mm AIO for like $80 to $100. Choose any upgrade from this deal is not worth it IMO.

This is still a good deal if you dont know how to build your own PC, don't get me wrong. Buy it, set the nvidia max frame rate to match ur monitor. Download hwinfo, and play ur games, and watch the CPU temp, CPU total utilization, and GPU usage. Then decide if u wanna upgrade either the monitor, or the cooler
Save the money to get a high refresh rate high definition monitor. People often pair powerful CPU and graphic cards with cheap to mid tier monitors. No much point to run a pc capable of 120hz at 4k, only to use a 60hz 1080p monitor.

      • Good advice 👍

      • I take my comment on the stock cooler back, I was using 10400 anf 11400 as reference. 12th gen uses lot more power than 11th and 10th gen.
But an air cooler from anywhere is cheap, just watch for LGA 1700 compatability.
Another tip though, add another case fan on the top of the case, to get hot air out of the case.
Air cooler doesnt work well if your intake fans out perform exhaust fan (too much positive pressure). The leaper case will almost certain only come with one exhaust fan.

    • +1

By the time you upgrade everything it’s no longer a bargain!

    • The 12400F is the first time I've felt the stock fan just wasn't good enough and needed immediate replacement.

However just a Coolermaster H412r with a 92mm fan has been fantastic for keeping it cool even under heavy load, so it doesn't need a super beefy AIO. I had to buy an adapter bracket which by now probably comes in the box.

    • +3

try to avoid aio as necessary as you can unless the CPU TDP exceese every air cooler capacity.
      or you want the look.

otherwise air cooler is way better.

  • Nice. Shipping later in the month … likely before Christmas or hard to guarantee?

    • +6

I'd say you'd be lucky getting anything from anyone at moment before xmas…

      • I could get components and build over my break tho.. prefer not to

        • Can understand that….

Just shipping anything this time of year is a lose/lose lottery …

          • @pharkurnell: Tell me about it. I'm still waiting for an express post parcel that AusPost have had since the 28th of November. Sydney to Melbourne. They'll start to investigate if I still haven't received it by the 21st.

            • +1

@Miss B: i've been getting mine quicker than usual, i even received one from england sent 25 nov (i did go into posties today and the boss was tearing the delivery guys a new one for not doing things the right way round)

              • +1

@juki: me too - I bought like 8 things black fri / cyber mon and they all came starting from 2 days later and one lagging thing Thursday last week. I presumed extra resources had been put on in anticipation of peak demand

  • -1

Thanks OP. Do you guys give itemised receipts by component? It would be good for price protection.

    • -1

Most places it's a total price only

    • -1

They don’t. Buy at your own risk

    • Yeah you just gotta ask. Worked for me in the past at both TechFast and BPC anyway,

  • Tempting, I wish it was listed with a cooler other than the standard one.

    • +6

CPU cooler is an option, is it not?

      • Yes, correction, wish it was included ;-) , yes it is an option for extra $$

  • +2

    Where's the team red version?

  • +3

Very tempting as the video card alone is over $1k, though I was going to hold out and build myself a mini-itx eventually. If it's still around tonight after Friday beers who knows, I may end up pulling the trigger.

  • +2

What options are worth upgrading in this build if any?

    • -2

CPU, Cooler, Mobo, OS HD, HDD, PSU, WIFI, warranty

depends what your doing… and future proofing

  • +3

any difference to this deal? https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/720558

    • +1

Not really. Same price and specs, except for the case by the looks of things.

    • Same deal almost

  • +12

BPCtech; the ball’s now in your court

    • In a post last week they had hinted at a 3070 based deal coming this week, but it's now Friday….

      • +1

Lol ive been waiting for that too; but they did mention an i9 in it; overkill?

        • +2

Yeah, odd match up with 3070. Doesn't bode to well for it being an affordable option.

    • probably around the 2k mark, if not good value..

  • No operating system… Is that normal

    • +4
      • How reliable is that though

        • I’ve been using it fine for a few months now. I assume it’s product that fell off the assembly line. For $10, I don’t look too closely.

Worst case scenario, it conks out, and I end up having to activate some other way. (Another grey market code, a crack, or a full-price code, in that order.)

At the end of the day, it’s just a code. The software itself you download from Microsoft.

          • @DustyAfternoon: Thanks for sharing your experience, its hard to tell these grey market codes are scams or not

    • +2

      Yes.

    • Smart way to knock some of the cost off. Buy a cheap key instead

  • So tempting, I keep jumping between this and a Legion 7 and ditching the whole desktop idea. The curse of an ozbargainer indecision is real…

    • +3

Don’t go laptop unless you need to move around

      • My previous thoughts when I was leaning to Legion were:

1 space saved in office with no desktop tower.
2 extra monitor built in for normal use dual screens
3 plug into theatre room LG OLED for big screen games
4 can use laptop on couch

Realistically I don't think 3&4 would happen much hence the flip flopping.

        • +1

I went laptop for my last machine (msi raider, i7 something-or-other, rtx 2070), mostly because I was preparing to move a lot at the time, but now that I'm stationary I'll probably end up with a desktop for my next one. I've currently got the laptop plugged in under the desk where a desktop would be and have it outputting to an external kb/monitor/mouse. I had intended to do points 3 and 4 on your list as well but find that I almost never end up doing it. Like I think I've taken it downstairs maybe twice in the 2 years I've been settled in my current place. Everyone's different of course but I suspect you're probably right that 3 and 4 won't happen much. Bringing the huge power adapter with every time is kind of a drag also

        • Just my view from someone who has a PC (3070) and bought a laptop (3060) recently for similar purpose.

          1. The monitor would be too small, better to have 2 of the same size screen otherwise the laptop screen is next to useless next to a big monitor.
          2. A console would be better for that.
          3. Is not very comfortable for extended periods.

So I find I just use the laptop for the sake of using it, but don't actually game on it. Saying that it will be useful if I go away on trips.

          • @zorrt: Thanks, some good discussion points here for sure. You're probably right on the monitor, probably better to put the $1k differential towards an awesome Ultra wide upgrade from my Dell 27" (which is great for work but would like 32" / more gaming focused in future).

      • I used to be a strictly desktop gamer, but after having a winter round of covid, being stuck inside etc etc during lockdown … I realised how nice it is to game in bed. Like, get a rigid mousepad (I'm using the bottom of a surface pro believe it or not, but I'm sure you can find something a lot cheaper lol), and just lean back and play. Okay, you're not going to be at your best for competitive CS:GO or LoL but … There's nothing like cranking a game of Deep Rock Galactic at midnight with the lappy perched on your belly with all the comfort of lying in bed.

Some laptops will get uncomfortably hot for summer, I'm not sure whether there'd be a comfortable cooling pad for a reasonable price, but bed covers block the bulk of it (just don't block the vents) and something like a simple clean dinner plate would do the trick fine in a pinch I reckon.

In other words, ironically half the time I use my laptop because I'm moving around, and the other half because I'd rather stay in bed for a while lol.

    • Can a desktop be used with a docking station through 1 single Thunderbolt port? I have a work laptop and need to frequently change between work/home laptop through a docking station. I’m afraid if I go with desktop it wouldn’t work anymore because the desktop wouldn’t work with the docking station?

      • Can't answer your question sorry but my solution to this in my current setup:

        Logitech MX Keys keyboard
        Logitech MX Anywhere mouse
HDMI 2 cable / USB C power neatly cable organised ready to plug work laptop in.

The keyboard mouse amazing to swap between work and home setup with a button.

HDMI/power setup is no different to how I setup when I got into the office.

      • It can for peripheral devices but be aware if the monitors are not plugged directly into the GPU don't expect a high refresh rate.

      • Most desktops won’t offer thunderbolt but will offer usb-c. So for your peripherals it’ll be fine. For your screens though you’re better off using another set of hdmi/dps and switching on the input of your monitor.

  • Very tempting

  • Shows as $1999 plus postage?

    • +4

You will need to use this coupon 12400F-3080-DECEMBER at the checkout for the $200 discount.

    • +2

      Voucher code

    • +2

use the code for $200 off

    • +5

      I'm a dummy. Thanks all

Just recently renewed my wife's PC and bought all the parts from Amazon:

    • Intel i5-12400 $299
    • Thermaltake Versa J21 Medium Case $79
    • Thermaltake Litepower GEN2 650W PSU $75
    • Corsair Vengeance LPX 32GB DDR4 $156
    • ASUS Prime B660M-A WiFi D4 mATX Motherboard $249

    Note:

    • Got my own Samsung EVO 970 plus nvme ssd so dont need to buy (500GB one is $109 in Amazon)
    • My wife is not doing any gaming so I just used the integrated GPU from CPU

    Total cost: $858

All parts delivered within 24hours via Amazon Prime

This deal is great for gaming PC as the most valuable item is the graphic card (worth around $1300)
otherwise it will be cheaper with integrated graphic

    • -2

Integrated graphics vs top tier GPU … 🤔 same same?

Ps. You could’ve saved even more with an i3, lower wattage PSU and a much cheaper mobo

      • Dont bring logic to this drivel .. lol ;)

      • Just want to say adding all the parts together (including the GPU) will worth > $1799 so its a great deal
not having intention to say integrated graphic can even compare with RTX3080….

      • +3

His point seems to be "his wife's cost $858 without graphics card and a 3080 cost a lot so this is a good deal."

        What's the problem?

      • +1

Yeah I think you read his comment wrong. He's just sharing what he bought, and acknowledges in the last sentence that this is a great deal, given the cost of the GPU alone. What's the issue here? Dont make a mountain out of a mole hill.

    • yes, the headline is "Gaming PC:"
Integrated graphics just isn't even in the language of the target audience for this deal… it simply would not provide the functionality

    • So you're saying to build a similar PC with the parts you listed is $2267?

      • +1

yes, thats why I say its a great value for gaming PC

        • +1

I'm not sure how many even read it properly. Your point was fair and seemed rather obvious, not sure why so many people are missing it.

Maybe tweak the last sentence to make it more obvious.

    • -1

Missing GPU, where do you get a 3080 sub $1k?

  • +2

You got any other cases you can swap or pay extra for?

  • Couple of updates and I hit 2500 easily :'(

    Nice work though.

  • I want to pull the trigger, just holding on a little longer.

    • +4

      thanks for the update.

      • Hard crowd lol.

        • lost credits for not mentioning why … :P

  • +1

Oooooh, I’ve been looking out for a good gaming PC! Gawd this is an expensive month for me…

These are the upgrades I’m considering:

    1TB Hard Disk Drive (+$89.00)
    1TB NVMe M.2 Solid State Drive (+$79.00)
    600Mbps USB Wi-Fi Adapter (+$39.00)
2 Year Return To Base Warranty (+$99.00)

Anything else? Will it be fine to leave the motherboard, cooler and processor as they are without going for the higher priced versions?

    • +2

For and extra $20 I'd personally get 2TB Hard Disk, small additional for double size. Or…

Skip that and add 4TB yourself for about the same price …

      • +1

Thanks! Decided to skip it. :)

    • +1

SSD would probably be a gen 3 not gen 4. You would get better value buying your own SSD's and slotting/putting them in. Probably the easiest thing you could do with a PC.

The extra year is not worth it either. If something is faulty and breaks, you are still covered under the ACCC as consumer law states if something of high value is meant to last more than 12 months then the manufacturer or supplier is obligated to repair, replace or refund.

Upgrading the processer to the i7 won't net you much performance gains but will help for longevity a little bit of your build, but I think it's not really worth the $299. The mobo and cooling is fine.

      • Thanks for the advice!

I’ve finally decided to bite the bullet and order - I haven’t owned a desktop in about 15 years (and my gaming laptop is pretty old too), so this is super exciting!

My poor, poor wallet though…on top of this PC I went and splurged on a new TV, a sound bar, a keyboard, and a 4K monitor, all in the last month. It’s been my first major tech overhaul in years.

        • +1

I feel your pain. I bought a new car this month and this settings like salt in a wound.

        • +1

You deserve it bro, and i'm sure you got some solid deals!

    • +2

      Wut

Don't get a USB WiFi adapter! Get a PCIe one, if you need one at all. Better yet, ask for an upgrade to a mobo with wifi integrated into it. Edit: Saw you already ordered, you should have time to ask for an upgrade on this before they ship it.

SSDs have wildly differing performance levels, DRAM vs DRAMless is one major question. I'd guess that if they're not specifying the SSD, there's a good chance it'll be garbage. I'd either buy one and put the thing in myself, or at the very least pick an option where you know what drive you're getting and can research it.

Why buy 1TB of spinning rust for more dollarydoos than an SSD? That's madness. HDDs are only better when the GB/$ is better, and that tends to be at sizes >2TB.

      • hi, whats the difference btwn PCIe and a USB WIFI adapter? Which one's better? Sorry I'm new to PC

      • Thanks for the advice. It doesn’t look like either of the motherboards that they offer have integrated wifi though?

        • You could call them up and double check I suppose, they might do an exception.

Otherwise, the advantage of PCIe over USB is mostly reliability (as in, less software bugs and less issues being detected etc), but there's also performance reasons. It's nice to be able to have just a generic WiFi adapter rather than having to muck about with some company's application for their USB adapter.

  • +4

Specs look great but is it just me or does the case look less than appealing?

    • +2

yea i'd agree… but not such an issue my PC now sits under desk so dont have to look at it… can be ugly as a hat full of arseholes if it saves me money

    • +2

      Case is a dealbreaker lol

    • Just want to say that I like the look of the case. If anything, needs more white.

      • Wasn't there a white PC with a 3060 Ti around or slightly before Black Friday on offer?

  • +1

final allocation so quantities strictly limited!

Absolutely disgusting move by nvidia to move demand onto their stupidly priced 4080 that no one currently wants.

Bloody hell amd (and Intel), save us.

  • +1

Also, how does this deal compare to this one from Titan Tech It? Has anyone here had any experience with them?

    https://titantechit.com/products/ozbargain-special-rtx3080-5…

    • This looks good also, and free shipping and no zip pay mark up.

    • +4

That deal looks like good value. But I'm not sure if they're still around. I emailed them, tried messaging their website and called them and haven't received a response at all. This was a week ago.

So if you buy, you might be waiting a while…or worst case fighting to get your money back…

      • Oof, that’s a worry.

    • Oh, this is much better. Nice find.
