Overcharged at Coles Express

Hi Everyone,

I was overcharged at Coles Express when I filled up diesel. 72.06 liter diesel at 210.9 per liter minus 4c per liter discount should have been 151.9754 - 2.8824 = $149.093. But I was charged $168.56.

What are my options ? It felt like cheating and unless customer notice they get away with this. Am I entitled to get refund of full amount of $168.56 ? I contacted them and they are taking long time to respond for any solution.

They should offer you a gift card refund of balance and hopefully investigate it. Not much we can do here.

You could report it to Consumer Affairs Victoria if you wish: https://www.consumer.vic.gov.au/

Also, download the Carsales app to get another 4c/L off (stacks with Flybuys discount).

    • I believe Citylink discount stacks with FB as well.

    How is it possible?

I wonder too. Computers can't really make that mistake.
Was the price changing at that exact moment? Not that that makes any more sense but maybe…

      • +2

That's what i think. Price on big LEd price sign was 210.7 and on bowser it was showing 237 when i filled . But seeing 210.7 on receipt thought i was charged correctly and cashier also said you have been charged at 210.7.

A race condition would explain it.
Some badly written code that did not show up in testing, because the error only happens in a very narrow time window. But normally you'd be talking nanoseconds.

You've got the receipt. The only problem will be talking to the right person.

Surely OzB community is the right persons for EVERYTHING?

Am I entitled to get refund of full amount of $168.56 ?

I really doubt they'd give you a full refund. More likely they'll give you the difference back and maybe, if they're feeling nice, a little bit more for your inconvenience.

But it does make me wonder how many other people have been overcharged and how that would even happen.

But unlike most if not all supermarket items, you can't return fuel.

        • Also, this is a supermarket association Code of Practice for scanning, nothing to do with Coles Express as they are not a supermarket.

      • +3

well for supermarkets they refund the first product only
so for the first 0.0000000001 litre they will refund

      • +5

You mean the supermarkets that agree to the voluntarily "scanning code of practice"?
Definitely should apply at a petrol station then :/

      • +1

You think that's bad, I have a valid library card but they won't let me take any free books from Angus & Robertson.

It won't even let me get free sausage sandwiches from the Bunnings! (Um, hello, the bread is the book cover and the sausage is the pages, it's a book, idiots).
Luckily I had my copy of the United Nations charter on human rights with me so I could film myself reciting a bit of that in the doorway. Doesn't get you the sausage sanga but it's arguably another Bunnings tradition all the same.

Businesses are so dodgy and inconsistent when applying "logic"

      • This is by choice of the supermarket! not because they have to or you deserve it.

      • I know what you are talking about, the scanning code of practice. I am not sure if it applies to petrol stations (happy to be corrected), but I understood there to be a limit to the price of the product in question of $50, which this exceeds and therefore would be ineligible.

I'm not surprised. They overcharge in general. Even with the fuel discount they are more expensive than almost everyone else. I can never understand why people go there.

If this is a once-off then maybe, MAYBE Coles will hand-wave it as a computer error, pay the OP and end of story.

If anybody else in Australia can show another example of this 'error' within the last couple of years then it immediately moves into systemic rorting, and the media etc will be all over this with a fine-tooth comb for every outlet Australia-wide.

I would suggest the OP return to the same outlet and use the same pump, get more fuel and see if the 'problem' repeats itself before raising any suspicions with the company in question.

Just steal five Mars Bars and call it even.

  • I’d chase with coles but also submit to ACCC

Yesterday there was a case where Uber was fined for overcharging when the estimated price was lower

    https://amp.abc.net.au/article/101742098

    • Yes but by presenting a higher price for the UberTaxi they would encourage more people to select the traditional Uber option. Also the warning about a cancellation fee that didn't apply would mean people were less likely to cancel the Uber trip. It's not ridiculous when you dive into it.

    Full refund lol, get real

Coles woolies fuel is crap, but I get 4c off lol

    • +2

      They are all the same.

    • Coles is Shell
      Woolies is Ampol.
Both probably came from the same refinery.

I'm impressed that someone still carries $200 cash with them.

  • 72.06 liter diesel at 210.9 per liter

    was the 210.9 ex gst?

    • No its including GST

  • You are definitely entitled to a refund of the difference here as the service station has breached the Australian Consumer Law and Fair Trading (Code of Practice for Fuel Price Boards) Regulations 2016 - Source

In this instance if appears that the price has been updated on the bowser but not the sign, and then there's some kind of presentation layer issue on the receipt, but if the price was ~237c per litre then it has accurately charged you at that price. The problem you may have with making a complaint under the code of practice is that unless you have evidence that the sign was wrong, it would be difficult to prove.

That being said the calculation shown to you is incorrect so you have evidence to support your claim that you have been incorrectly charged.

  • First, go back to the Servo, see the manager. Take your calculations and be polite.

You need to understand how this is possible or it happened, so give them an opportunity to resolve the discrepancy.

If still not happy come back here with the details.

  • Could you have paid for someone else fuel?

    • Not possible. Paid what's on the receipt. Calculation on receipt is incorrect.
