did Indonesia just pass the no-sex before marriage law the other day?

    • +3

I believe it has a penalty of one year in jail.

    • -2

Yea, I wouldn't advise anyone not married to fly to Bali until there are some more information on the new criminal laws! At the moment, no-sex before marriage and no-sex outside the marriage either or you go to prison…

      • +14

seems like a good deal to me flights, 5 nights accommodation + extra 1 year rent free

      • +5

Don't know why you needed to neg though, it's got nothing to do with the deal

        • +6

The destination of the deal has nothing to do with the deal?

        • -2

          I Agree.

The new laws passed doesn't apply to the deal.

So if we disagree with another countries new laws but the flight deal was sold at a really low price does that still warrant a Neg?

Also these laws don't apply to everyone and you don't just go to Bali or Indonesia for Sex. Theres more other things to do than that.

          • -1

            @SpeedRunnerLink:

So if we disagree with another countries new laws but the flight deal was sold at a really low price does that still warrant a Neg?

This is just bad timing to post something about Bali lol. Some people are upset with the new law being introduced. And they take it on stuff they can.

      • +9

You need to be reported to police by a family member though for police to take any action.
This law is really targeted at locals, not tourists.

        • I don't know why someone negged you for telling the truth :/

          • +1

@foxes28: because the truth gets in the way of that persons fake moral outrage/thinly disguised racism

        • +1

Too bad if you don't get on well with your partner's mother. She could ring the Indonesian authorities while you are on the plane and you would be arrested at the hotel.
          Sounds like Qatar!

          • +1

@scottishdave: I'd be surprised if you can get hold of Indo authorities on the phone that quick. Having dealt with them, they are lazy and slow AF.

          • -1

            - Bali police probably

        • I heard from ABC radio this morning that this law applies to tourists as well so be nice to hotel staffs. :)

          • +1

@sistermay: Didn't leave a big enough tip for the room service - maid calls police and says found a condom.

      • +1

I expect this to be used like other laws in Bali, cops will hit you up for a bribe, and if you don't pay up, cancel your plans for the next year because you'll be behind bars in a third world prison.

      • Woww such a travesty

    • -1

Guess I am past that stage. So all party animals and cheaters….booo this new rule ;)

    • +1

The new laws won't come into effect for three years to allow for implementing regulations to be drafted.
      You still have time!

Better go holiday to Phuket - less scammer / Sharia law

  • +2

While my other half and I have been together for for nearly 13 years of which 11 living together. Going to Bali we would technically be breaking the law and facing jail.
    Insane.

    • I'm in the same boat, same amount of years and everything! Although we're getting married in Bali in May so might just have to wait til after the wedding 😆

      • Congratulations!

      • the waiting will make it even more special.

    • +1

Nope this is incorrect. Unless your/your partner's direct family member reports you guys to the local authority, nobody will bother you there.

      • Thank you for the clarification.

  • -2

Many Australians will now go to jail..
    Pass…….

    • They wont though.
Tourism is so much of their income.

Could you imagine how much work it would take to hold every tourist couple, while they contact the Australian office of births deaths and marriage, and officially request a marriage certificate?!
It would be insane (and Australia might even refuse).

Logically, the law is to curb prostitution and 'roudy teens' who disobey since like most Asian countries a gerontocracy is expected.

Besides, it can only be reported by close family. Hotel staff and such cant blackmail you (so long as you're informed)

  • +2

only for jabbers and married now

    • +2

I have no issues with that.

The amount of times I've been to Bali with single hormone overloaded youngsters doing stupid things and disrespecting the local counties landmarks and culture.

I'm actually wanting to go back again now with these new laws.

      • +1

Started going yearly in the 80's surfing, all over Indo back when it was like another planet, no communication, only food was Indo, no news or tv's in rooms, now it's just like the Gold Coast lol, even worse with the traffic and amount of people.
Last trip was 8 years ago but went up the east coast 30 mins north of Sanur.
        Swapped to the Maldives.

    • +1

Attempts to prevent disease and prostitution?
So many countries have done worse things; often without good intention.

  • +3

The new laws will very much hurt the tourism industry from the publicity alone. The biggest problem I can see coming out of it is the opportunity it will create for blackmail and extortion of tourists over fear of jail and prosecution by rogue authorities and hotel staff.

    I won't be going back.

    • You are on the ball, the police will use this law to target tourists that do not know the full extent of the law

    • but rogue authorities and hotel staff aren't "close family" so they can't.

Unless you're reading a different law to me?
      Link?

      • no link required. B-S-S wrote it on the internet so it must be true.

at least the 3 pos voters (who have already decided that it is true- as per their previous comments) don't need any clarification or facts in support of it

  • +1

For those unsure about the new legislation

"The latest articles on sex outside marriage and cohabitation state such complaints can only be reported by close relatives such as a spouse, parent or child."

    Jakarta Post

    As an example:

if my partner and I go to Bali, stay in a hotel together, we are fine.

If I am single, go to Bali, get lucky at the end of the night with a lady friend, get reported by the lady friend's parents, partner or kid - I will break this new law

If I am single, go to Bali, get lucky at the end of the night with a lady friend, get reported by the hotel consierge - I will not break this new law

    • how do you have a child without having sex in the first place?

      • In the case of your question, we are assuming the lady friend is a divorced mum with child or a nephew or niece etc

      • jesus christ ! how would that even happen?

      • Without sex? IVF I guess.

    • yeah and they really follow the laws over there lol, ever been pulled over by a cop here and paid your way out with cash for doing nothing wrong haha

    • -2

"The latest articles on sex outside marriage and cohabitation state such complaints can only be reported by close relatives such as a spouse, parent or child."

<—-in Indonesia $$$ can buy law, google the news about “Sambo the police chief”

    • With Bali polices notoriety for hitting up people for bribes, I wouldn't be relying on that.

      • Yes you're right, with any luck you know a bit about the legislation and talk your way out of a bribe

    • I predict that 2nd case would likely soon be a common extortion plot around the country. (for tourists and locals alike)

  • Would probs be up there now if wasn't for the 2 x jabbers rule, if I didn't surf I wouldn't bother going back again.

  • +2

people just read the news headline and then decide to outpour their incorrect knowledge onto others. Read the detailed story, before commenting.

    • So a government that has secularism written into it's constitution isn't changing the criminal code to appease fundamentalists? Pretty sure that's exactly what's happening.

Doesn't matter who is or isn't affected, who can or can't report it, or when it comes into affect. The whole thing is wrong.

      • +1

So a government that has secularism

If you think they are secular in a sense Western countries are, you are incorrect.

        The whole thing is wrong.

Who gets to be the judge though?

      • +1

        dude, you're thinking of america

      • +2

then say you refuse to go to Bali for your own personal beliefs and not spread misinformation. I don't agree with it either, but facts are facts and some people are still quoting incorrect headlines.

  • +3

No sex in Bali - Phuket

  • Aussies will complain and moan while the headlines still appear and then forget about it keep going there 'cause it's cheap!!
People still travel to Qatar as holiday destination and look what happens there.

    • +1

Exactly! Same story like the death penalty on drug cases. People were upset back then but I was in Bali two months ago and boy that place is still packed with Aussies.

    • +1

used to be cheap, Bali is stuffed now

  • +2

Hopefully gets rid of the bogan Aussies that just want to piss it up in nightclubs

    • Couldn't agree more.

I actually hated walking along Kuta main streets because of this.

Full of drunken Bogans causing scenes.

  • Thats a really good price for a 12 month holiday.
