Just got one for my elderly father who gets frustrated with Google searches and to stop him reaching for the outdated Brittanica Encyclopedia instead. Berlin wall… what's that? ;)

    • Received mine today. No good for me but will be perfect for my Dad (as above). Supplied with a 4Gb MicroSD card and the touchscreen works nicely both for typing and for wipe scrolling up and down. Decided I'd better upgrade the content before I give it to him so went to www.thewikireader.com and downloaded the file. You need to install it and take the MicroSD out of the unit and plug it into your PC but yeah it all seems to work OK. Be careful though, including all the Engligh 'pedias will total around 9Gb so you'll need to get a 16Gb card for it! Takes a while to upgrade too (ie. 3-4 hours of downloading/copying to SD).

For $20-30 it's excellent but definitely not worth too much more.

  • They do realise wikipedia is loaded with pictures and updated every second right?

      …updated every second right

Looks like it is possible to do an update of the content. It takes microSD card and comes with a program that takes MediaWiki XML dump to it's own file format.

this is essentially wiki offline loaded into a 3.5" monocrhome eReader
3.5" is not big enoug for a reader

The wiki-offline App (ios/android) is cheaper too

Ok price but don't think this is a bargain.

    • It could have it's uses. It runs off AA batteries for 90 hours. It's also kid friendly and would make a decent educational toy.

SRP $99, today $19.95 – THAT'S "HELL NO ONE WANTS IT"

  • Can't think that I'd ever have a use for this kind of device, but the price is good; even if you might need those wiki updates by the time COTD ships it to you! ;)

  • If you could replace half the articles with ones taken from Encyclopedia dramatica, I'd buy it.
    $7 shipping all states

  • Hi superkieu. Is there a way I can load wiki offline and the wikipedia database into a kindle device and use kindle as a wikireader ?

  • can i put a wikitravel on it? how difficult would that be?

    • I like your lateral thinking. A search turned up some hits, this looks relevant: http://lists.openmoko.org/nabble.html#nabble-td5990240 and this: http://lists.openmoko.org/nabble.html#nabble-td5990236

      • thnx mate, yeah googled that too, dont quite understand it (new base) but looks like after some reinstalling it should be able tu run wikitravel. Excellent thing for me since i dont like carrying expensive smartphone around when i am overseas

    • Yep, easy. Got mine today and have been updating a larger MicroSD card for the last few hours via a very slow online process triggered by a small executable you install on your PC. You can pick whatever you want from a number of 'pedias including Appropedia, Wiktionary, Gutenberg, WikiTravel, WikiQuote & WookiePedia. All the English 'pedias total about 9Gb so you'll need to get a 16Gb MicroSD card if you wish to do the same.

  • Its good for travel if you don't have roaming. I bought one of these last year from officeworks but had to return it.
The 2 main limitations are that it did not display pictures or tables. I could live without pictures but not being able to display tables was the main thing for me. Other than that the idea is good and you can load other stuff onto it from memory.
