Free Instant Credit Score Check (Experian) @ Commonwealth Bank Mobile Banking App or Net Banking (CBA Customers Only)

4370

I just noticed now CBA App is facilitating free instant self credit checks. Log into the App, and click on your profile, next to the tiles for personal details , tax file numbers is the credit score tile.

I tried from their mobile banking app and also Net Banking. Both worked. One needs to log in to Net banking to be able to access this for free. The credit check service provider is Credit Savvy/ Experian. I did a test run. It actually reports down to every credit account and their monthly payment histories, in arrears, paid on time, paid in full, etc.

Anyone can request their own credit scores from any of the credit check services like DNB, Experian. However, you need to write to them via their web portal and they will mail out the report. For the instant service their used to be a fee charged. Looks like this is free via CBA. I had signed up with Credit Savvy few years back, which emails me a monthly report and occasional spam marketing emails. Although, these do not have the detail anywhere near I found via the CBA-Experian link. This is really unnerving to know how much history is collected to make a credit decision.

There could be other avenues of getting this for free, probably if more of us would try other possible sources, we can build up a OzB Wiki on this. Tried Westpac, nothing came up. Credit score checks have particularly become relevant with the spate of data thefts.

If you are not a CBA customer you can open an account. You will not have any fees if you deposit at least $2000 every month. My salary goes in and instant out to another bank, and have operated the account fee free. Although I have other products which cost me an arm and a leg which is why I have kept the account.

UPDATE: Members are reporting that similar instant report is now available from Equifax, Credit Savvy/Experian directly too. However, one member has reported that they will ask for your drivers license data. Any free access to your credit score to me is good. But for CBA customers, this service did not ask me for drivers license. At the moments this is most convenient if you are a CBA customer. However, please feel free to explore other options and post your comments to help non-CBA customers too.

    • Really, just know that.

I don't like the idea of credit check, first we supply them with more information and in Australia credit check aren't that useful.
And there is no quick fix for bad credit ratings either.

    • I think some lenders are using credit checks, so probably useful to some extent. it's becoming more common that's for sure.

  • Where can I find it in the app? Tried searching for it but nil luck

  • +6

FYI there are three credit reporting bureaux in Australia, Experian, Ilion and Equifax. It's a good idea to check all three as not all credit providers update all three with new information.

    • +2

This is great information. I am surprised that no one else has pick up on this and acknowledged your contribution.

  • +1

Mine is blocked. Just the way I wanted it.

    • +1

Yeah, it says there is a ban in place for mine too. Was a bit of a pain putting it in place over and over but for whatever reason I think my current one is in place for 12 months rather than the 3 weeks or whatever.

  • I think one can get free credit score at Credit Savvy which is what Barefoot investor recommends in his articles.

    • This uses credit savvy anyway. Cba made credit savvy first and are probably just reusing the same data

  • +1

    This is awesome. Thanks OP!!

Quick question: for some reason my mortgage is not showing up?
    Loan started 2 years ago

    • +4

Congratulations you have paid off your loan!

      • I wish!!

    • Which lender is this with? Presumably they don't share credit data with Experian but with one of the other credit agencies.

    • What mortgage? There is no mortgage.

    • CommBank only show data from Experian (I think) - your mortgage may only be listed with Equifax or Illion

    • That is probably because your lender uses another reporting bureau for credit reporting.

  • It shows I have applied for the Citi cc with 20k limit but not showing the credit account as open, bit of a lag.

  • thanks it shows more than 800 for me, but when I tried recently get credit history, they said I don't have a credit file, weird :/

  • Does it hurt to check your score against multiple sources? Like I regularly check mine against credit simple, simply. Will it hurt my credit score if I do against commbank?

    • +2

There's no impact to your credit record when checking your score/history.

You should use both Credit Simple, and Finder/Credit Savvy for example - Credit Simple use data from illion, Finder/Credit Savvy use data from Experian. (And then another service for Equifax)

You may find that some lenders use all 3 credit bureaus, some may use 2, and others may only use 1.
Eg, one may only appear on Credit Simple, but not Credit Savvy/Finder.

  • I've read and agreed to the Credit Score Terms & Conditions, I consent to:
Credit Savvy being appointed my 'access seeker' to access my credit information on my behalf

    What's up with that?

    • They got you bro.

    • Basically means you give consent for your credit information to be retrieved without leaving a footprint on the bureau/impacting your credit score.

      • -3

Ok thanks for telling me. I thought this was supposed to be a direct process between me, the credit body and CommBank (as they already know everything about me).

So Credit Savvy is potentially another company like Optus and Medibank that can leak my information and then apologise with no consequences.

        • +1

(Just fyi, Credit Savvy is owned by CommBank - it's a CommBank product)

Technically Credit Savvy already has these details; when you apply for credit and supply your identification documents, these are used to verify you are you with the credit bureau.

Would you like it if anyone could say they were bigbadboogieman and see your credit history without providing any identification documents at all?

Also, CommBank may not have all your details, depending on how long ago you signed up or completed a KYC check; ie CommBank may not have your driver licence number if you never gave it.

          • @b3au: Good point. May be I will steer clear altogether. I never gave them my driver's licence. I actually didn't have a driver's licence when I signed up with them.

        • You're not wrong, and everyone pretending that a subsidiary/startup is running on commbanks actual servers with full access to it's customer data store is kidding themselves/has no idea how the tech world works.

Commbank might even own them but they're still a standalone entity, with their own ABN.

      • Appointment of Credit Savvy
        By using this service:

        • You acknowledge Credit Savvy will:

          • deliver your requested information (retrieved through Experian) to you via the dashboard and Credit Report Summary in the Credit Score Hub (within Netbank and Commbank App). Only you (and not CommBank) will have access to this information and;
          • periodically update you credit information to ensure your dashboard reflects any changes;

        • You acknowledge Credit Savvy's request to access your credit information on your behalf will be recorded on your credit report for your information only, for you to know who has accessed your credit file and you agree this appointment and authorization continues until such time as you cancel your access to the Credit Score hub.

  • I believe credit savvy and finder get credit score from the same source?

    • +2

Yep, both Credit Savvy (CBA product) and Finder use Experian data.

  • +1

I had my DL stolen back towards the end of 2019 then covid hit and I wasn't in the best mental space to follow through. service NSW was of no help.

I put a ban on my credit file through equifax but they took it off after a year and the grub was able to make about 10 credit card applications on the same day.

Randomly checked one day and found this so asked them to put the ban again which they did.

also have a police report and emails to equifax describing the issue and them satisfied.

I am debt averse so never held even a credit card let alone anything other debt but still I get a score of 714 - very good.

Question is how do I go about having these credit card applications removed from my file or is it too late now.

I don't plan on applying for credit anytime soon but I'd like to have a clean record.

    • grub was able to make about 10 credit card applications on the same day.

How does this scam actually work ?
Does the grub have to wait outside your house to intercept the mail when the card gets delivered ? For multiple days because he doesn't know the exact delivery date ?

  • the CBA credit check will be done via Credit Savvy, which is free to everyone anyway, there is an APP you can download. The app provides personal credit score updates monthly and via the APP ( https://www.creditsavvy.com.au/app )

Besides the credit score, you can also log in and see
1, all your credit cards providers,
2, your recent credit card applications
3, temporarily ban access to your credit report for 21 calendar days - would be good if your personal data has been leaked

(And as a reminder, Credit Savvy is a CommBank Product. If you'd rather not deal with CommBank, there's also Finder as another option….)

I'm on 999, so it would be interesting to know if 1000 is actually possible!

  • However, one member has reported that they will ask for your drivers license data.

If you read the info before you agree to CBA supplying your info to CreditSavvy for the check, they will send through all the data CreditSavvy normally asks of you in order to perform the credit check, including driver's licence info.

So this is pretty much equivalent to doing a credit check directly at CreditSavvy, just without having to sign up for an account with them directly.

I wouldn't say I like Commbank's service. There is a Platinum debit card that offers more benefits compared to the standard debit card. They choose people randomly for it, or if you have 250k in your acc, I wanted that card, and I requested them online and even visited the branch but had no luck. They mentioned it would be chosen randomly. We can't request them as they select random people. Why can't they give it to the people who requested it?

    • Oh I got that card, years ago. No clue why I got it haha

  • Comparing my score in the Finder app vs CBA (which both use Experian), there is a lag with the CBA score.

CBA has me at 874, which is what it was in October, but Finder updated my score to 908 at the start of November.

  • Its not accurate at all!
It tell my score is 801 while the real one is 350!
I am having some issues because of it that's why I know it
Although it is showing all the credit cards application rejections!!

    • Interesting. Perhaps your score is drastically different between the 2 score providers.

      • The other is credit savvy!

  • +1

Ouuf my overdraft and steppay are showing both of which I rarely use. Would this have a negative impact on my credit score even if I pay on time or early ?

  • +1

I got 968. Higher than expected.

  • +1

No funny comments like, bought 10 yet?

  • +1

Just remember each of the main credit reporting agencies have their own scoring systems so the scores between reporting agencies will vary.

I have used CreditSimple for years now which is the consumer arm of Illion. Highly recommend, I even get an alert via email if someone attempts a credit check!

  • Ive tried ×3, not working. "Something went wrong, try again later" 😔 anyone experienced same? Thanks!

  • Which one does latitude financial use?
And which one does credit simple use?

    • Credit Simple is Illion

  • +3

There's quite a few services for this out there, IMO one of the best is wisr because they check experian + equifax (no illion though) with full history, and have pretty straightforward motives (they provide loans themselves based on soft checks, no external marketing like finder as far as I can tell).

  • i dont know much there credit things, but it shows my credit score is 814 which is excellent and Equifax was showing around 500 , now these two are related or different ???

  • So this reports 798, but Credit Simple reports 541!?

  • +2

dont forget to withdraw consent after checking :)

    • how would you do that ? or was that just intended for Hugh More

      • +1

the option at the end when you get your credit score

        • +1

Thanks mate I did not see that.

It's at the bottom of the page if anyone is curious.

  • I got Excellent credit score according to the check but they refused my credit card application a week ago. They said my liabilities (home loan) is too high and my pay is too low. LOL! The bad news is they did have a “hard” credit check on my profile and also marked as Declined.

  • -1

    The darknet will thank you!

  • +1

If you use www.wisr.com.au it will show you your Experian and Equifax scores for free.

  • Its over 9000!

  • Creditsavvy owned by cba so that kinda makes sense, also got this from barefoot newsletter during optus breach

  • -2

Isn't this also a handy way for CBA to gain current credit check without having to ask you to sign a form? Very crafty of them, providing a "service" to you for their own benefit. Always look for an alterior motive when a bank "helps" you. They are anything but altruistic.

  • How safe to share your bank information to the 'Credit Savvy' and 'Experian'? seem third-party company that is doing the check. I am not about sure you guys, for me, personally I do not like to share to any third party any information related to my bank account.

    • Credit Savvy is a Commbank' side product. So either way, they have your information already, just cant access it unless you consent for them apply for credit check. Experian is credit bureau.

      • This is just wrong, if you have never gotten credit before then the credit agencies literally have nothing on their servers.

The last time I signed up to a credit alerts system, I had to tell them all about my employment history and so on. They couldn't match me with anyone in their system, but sadly they do have my information now. Whether someone finds it useful to know that I work as a legal professional is debatable though.

It is only time until their database gets leaked. It's not an if, it's when considering how many cybersecurity incidents we have been seeing lately.

It also turns out that you need to tell the banks where you earned most of your income and to update your profession. I have not dug into the exact legislation which requires this as it is not my area of expertise, but there does seem to be a pattern which exists outside of requiring it to target you with bank loans and credit cards. I believe it has something to do with AML Acts.

  • Result was 904! Anyone beat that?

    • +1

      999 on this page.

  • +1

I got 981. Higher than expected.

    • Must be doing sth right. Show us the path lol

  • -1

This sends them your information to update their database… I am not sure that is smartest thing to do, but it is free.

    • +1

They already have your information. They let you see for free only if you are able to prove your identity.

      • Not quite correct statement!
It is true that CBA has your information, but the other mob (credit savvy) do not have these info and even though they might be owned by CBA, CBA can not pass your info to them, so since you clicked I agree, they (credit savvy) have your info, which could be valuable to them for many reasons.

Anyway, I tried it on Netbank and got my score which was in line with Get Credit Score (excellent) as well. However, after I got my score/report, I withdrew my consent to share my info.

        • The credit bureaus get information from the credit providers. Hence, my comment that they already have your information (from other credit providers).
They make this available for a fee to other credit providers. Own information is free to access. The IDs are required to verify that it is being released to the right person. This is not relevant that Credit Savvy is owned by CBA, but applies with other credit bureaus too. Only pecuniary advantage here is that this is more convenient, and CBA verifies the person's identity and Credit Savvy allows access to the credit file.

  • +1

Tried this through the app and it worked. Thanks for sharing.

  • +2

Nice, always wanted to do one but never felt comfortable giving all my ID to Equifax through their site (even though they doubtlessly get it via the actual banks I know).

Despite six CC churns and four home loan churns somehow my score is still above 850 though which is nice. Though they actually seem to have missed an extra fifth home loan cashback churn with BOQ from 2021. ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

  • +1

    Thank you

This was so easy, I came in at 877!

I have a home loan, I closed my American Express earlier this year when I applied for a Commonwealth bank card and I applied for a NAB credit card a month ago.

This makes me pretty happy, I think I'm going to apply for another Qantas credit card in the next month!

To be fair, I've never had any negative hits on my credit, and furthermore, other than this year I only had that American Express for about 2 years… so I'm not a card flipper generally.

  • Lmao why are you all doing this?

    • +2

Checking to see if credit has been fraudulently obtained in your name.

      Don't you check yours ?!

  • +1

Many free providers, e.g. the following will give your scores across the major providers Experian, Equifax, and Illion

    getcreditscore.com.au
    creditsavvy.com.au
    clearscore.com

  • +1

Could just do it via credit savvy. its free on their website

  • I have 849 but have never used a credit card ever and have no idea how I even have a credit score higher than 0? Can someone explain what's going on?

Why should I even care about having a credit score?

    • you really shouldn't care in Aus. In the US it is a big deal as you need it for loans. It isn't just credit cards that give you a credit score, Loans, car loans, leases any sort of store finance contract or anything where they are doing a credit check on you gives you a score.

      • I would like to disagree. A few years ago, I went through financial hardship and score dropped below average (630) and I couldn't even sign up for JB 12 months mobile plan, let a alone a car loan or mortage

        • In Australia they don't use the score. Though the score can reflect many of the hardships you were going through, so yes if your score has sunk due to problems you will be affected (But your score is not the issue, it is the items that lead to that score), if you have no score or low score because you haven't done anything to create one it is not a problem here.

    • In Australia you start at the highest and it goes down as you get lines of credit. That’s the opposite of how it works in the US. Over there, you’re encouraged to get credit to build a history of repayments , but here any credit is seen as a liability that could hurt repayments like on a mortgage. So you won’t be able to borrow as much if you have a credit card

The date of this original post threw me… I thought I slept a little longer than usual then realised it was posted 364 days ago

    • +1

      Lol me too

      • +1

Me too. I was wondering, what is going on with this post and why are people starting to comment after a year. Looks like this is auto reposted as a popular deal.

  • Yep was confused on the date of this. It was always a pointless offer as all they do is send your details to CreditSavvy which is free anyway and you could just go direct to them.

  • Never have had any credit yet I sit at 792.
How come do I lose points by sleeping?

  • I'm using clearscore app on android for free as well. Gives credit score report every month.

  • For those who use Clear Score, you can actually check your credit scores from 2 different credit bureaus which are illion (i have 804) and Experian (830). For Equifax then you can try Get Credit Score ( mine 851).

  • yay 881
    anyone got 1000 yet?
