  • Does it have Australian warranty? Or grey import?

    • +5

of course :) - Bought from Australian Distributors

  • damn!!! Why! Why are you doing this to me? Why do sell this one at this price after i bought my Crucial???

    • Yer I bought an M4 on Friday after months of hand wringing, then this.

  • Outstanding price !

If only we had the 256 GB drive at $1/GB

    • not going to happen :( I wish

      • Ah well, one day it will :)
        Till then, Crucial M4 :) :)

  • Are these better than the Crucial or Sandisk?

    • +1

Depends on the type of benchmark you do.

But pretty on par with both :)

      • +2

The OCZ Vertex 4 128GB using 4-core for $152 will smash this in write, BUT the Samsung 3-core will smash the Vertex 4 on read <256KB-2GB…., crazy to pick between the two… LOOOL

        The Vertex 4 has a 5 year warranty, the Samsung 3 years…

Vertex 4 uses a Indilinx Everest 2 MLC
        Samsung uses the Samsung MLC

2 things to take note, the Vertex 4 is Incredibly fast, but early days…, the Samsung 830 are very highly spoken of in terms of stability are reliability…

        • +1

I have a vertex 4 and am very happy, its the best SSD I have owned. Speeds are batnut crazy, i get like 14 second boots and the second the desktop is up i can open any application in less then 2 seconds. iTunes use to lag to open for me, some where around 10 seconds, now its open before I depress my finger from my mouse.

    • +9

Better according to anadtech -> http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/425?vs=533

      • -6

        Nice +1

    • pretty sure the Samsung 830 was the SSD of the year for 2011 for one of the sites (Anandtech maybe)

  • GB/$1? That equals $1GB. :D

  • -3

Would've been better if you had this deal before EOFY.

    • EDIT.

    • +18

i ain't no dodgy man! Check previous deals here: http://www.ozbargain.com.au/deals/phasercomputers.com.au

Only 1 product because our online shop is still being worked on.

Feel free to come in store and pick it up from wednesday

      • +2

I do remember rhys100 previous deal, hes very legit and also a great OzB rep.

      • double negative…

    • +5

I can vouch for their legitimacy. My $1 speakers are going strong.

      • +6

        haha nice :)

  • -2

pretty sure its against paypal rules to add extra for paypal…I'm pretty sure someone will find the link…

    • +1

Only for ebay purchases. Plenty charge extra for pay pal and credit cards.

  • EDIT: nvm

  • why is the read speed much less on the samsung compared to some other SSDs.

    • i noticed that as well, not sure mate!

        • +4

haha, well i knew what the guy posted below, but not sure of the exactly details of why their controller read speeds are slower. Maybe they actually list the ACTUAL speeds unlike the other companies who overstate them :P

    • +1

Because Samsung uses their own controller
Other brands use Sand Force controller which is faster but has stability issues.

The Sand Force controller stability problem has improved a lot
YET, Samsung and Intel SSD with their own controller happen to be the most stable ones

OCZ brands often fail because they use Sand Force controller with OCZ firmware

I use Intel 520 128GB SSD with SF controller but they use their own firmware to control the controller.
They also provide 5 year warranty on it

      • +1

Intel doesn't have their OWN controller. They just worked with SF to make a very reliable firmware unlike the others.

Samsung uses their own however :)

        • Before they released 520, 330 series, they did ;)

        • :)

        • +1

Actually they did, but their newest offerings are SF.

          EDIT: Beaten.

        • -2

The point is, they don't anymore.

    • As someone else said below they use different controllers. Which results in them being able to compress data more for some controllers. But not all data is compressible.

  • is it possible to come pick it up today? possibly buying two…

    • pickups from wednesday arvo sorry.

Place an order on the shop and mark pickup to make sure there is enough stock :)

      • +2

not too keen now, impulse shopping urges supressed

        • +3

          :(

          Plus 1 bargain instead? :D

        • why not for a fellow coastie.

        • :))

  • Anyway, great price. I'm quite tempted to buy it

  • How do I pay by credit card (not Paypal)? Only options in the cart are Bank Deposit or Cash on Pickup.

If you want me to use Paypal please remove the $14 surcharge. It is showing as $142 in your Paypal link. Also, how do I buy 2 in Paypal?

    • Sorry guys, that was a typo and has now been fixed to 128+4.

  • -1

You can get less than $1 per GB if you look around for brands like Sandisk and Crucial. Even OCZ have had sales. I think $89 recently at Centrecom for 128GB.

By the way, I'm pretty sure that charging a surcharge for using Paypal is against Paypal's terms and conditions.

Paypal buyers, please use the following link ($4 Surcharge)

Using that link you are charging $142 by Paypal instead of $128. That's more than a $4 mark up. Calling it a handling fee instead of a surcharge to get around Paypal's T&C is kind of dubious IMO.

    • +3

Sorry guys, that was a typo and has now been fixed to 128+4.

and also mate, those $89 drives are very old stock. Not talking the same quality or speeds at all.

      • -6

but that OCZ one at $89 from Centrecom has a maximum write speed of 500mb/s and this one only 320mb/s. (Their read speeds being equal.)

        • +8

          then buy theirs mate :)

        • -2

Speed aside, reliability is the biggest factor. Earlier drives had more issues, talk to the amount of people with BSODs and mysteriously dead drives :)

        • +1

Those were OCZ Octanes, which use Marvell controllers. They are the same controller as used in Crucial M4. Very reliable. And they are not old. They released late 2011.

I'm not in the market for an SSD, but if I was I'd buy one of those over one of these.

      • Samsung drives own those slow $89 drives for speed and qty

        • -1

As I said, they are the same as Crucial M4. Among the top in reliability.

Speed differences are negligible in real world usage. The only time you'll feel the difference is in benchmarks. Reliability is the most important.

I personally don't see this is that big a bargain.

  • +1

How long is this deal for? I don't get paid till next Friday :(

    • +3

Put through an order through for direct deposit and ill ship when payment comes through :)

    • +8

If you have no savings, a luxury item like this is not for you.

      • +8

Maybe he doesn't want to use his savings.

      • +3

        whos a cute birdy :3

        • +2

          me ! :>
btw your avatar looks weird… :/

  • +1

I thought less than $1 per gigabyte was the new standard for bargains.

  • Can I use this to replace a SATA 2 HDD in my Desktop PC? It just crashed.

    • yep

  • +1

REP - can these be used to replace the mid-2012 13-inch MBP 2.5" HDD? are there any compatibility issues?

    • +1

Not sure on the new macbooks, i know the old ones are fine.

  • Why is there a PayPal link for $132 when if you go through the shop and choose paypal express checkout it's $125?

    • +1

Title just got updated as you typed this.

You can now purchase through the online shop for paypal, but you will still be charged the extra $4. Its called a paypal capture. After you have gone through the checkout i can go into paypal and change the total to 132 to cover the fees.

  • Here's a review for those interested, they mention there's some issues with write times but this is negligible compared to standard HDs:

    http://www.tweaktown.com/reviews/4520/samsung_830_series_128…

  • Fantastic deal. May be interested in one in a few months time (we'll see). Though even better would be a 256GB for close to $1 per GB.

  • picture is a 256gb drive … now that would be sexy!!

  • +1

$1/GB, we're getting there boys and girls!

    • +5

We're past there. Do a search on OZB for Crucial M4. You'll find the $1 per GB barrier has been broken by quite a margin before and quite regularly at that.

      Also Sandisk Extremes.

I'm just surprised that so many people weren't aware of those frequent deals and saw this as the biggest bargain per GB ever seen.

      • +2

Not the biggest bargain/GB but the best ever deal on this particular SSD .

      • +3

at last, someone said something rational. same here, i also wonder why people went crazy about this deal.

      • +1

I'm just surprised that so many people weren't aware of those frequent deals and saw this as the biggest bargain per GB ever seen.

        1) Surely the quality and brand of the product on offer has a bearing, or maybe not for you ?

        2) Most of those deals for quality brands have been from Amazon, not with local warranty.

        • +1
          1. The brands that have been cheaper are quality brands. Cheaper =/= worse. The Samsung is not the #1 most recommended SSD brand by savvy people or even in the top 3.

          2. That is true, however if you don't live in NSW where Phaser Computer is, I don't see it being a whole lot better. Buying online always makes warranty a bit more complicated, no matter where you got it from. At least Amazon is a giant, trusted and world recognized brand. Their warranty procedures are also really good. I had a friend RMA a Crucial M4. They paid his return shipping and gave him a brand new unit, even though it was 6 months old. I doubt Phaser will do that for you.

There are plenty of local PC shops that do a bad job with RMA. They either take forever, or they say there's no problem with it. Local warranty isn't always what it's cracked up to be. The reputation of the merchant is more important when it comes to warranty, and the bigger guys having more at stake are usually less dodgy.

  • How many of these do you have in stock? Might pick one up tomorrow.

    • +1

Also, since im somewhat of a n00b at installing computer hardware, would this fit in a laptop? Samsung RV720..

      • Damn, im an idiot and didnt see the update. Shame. :(
