You can plug one end into a display system and the other wherever you choose to !

Also available and a bargain Monster 8K UHS Cobalt HDMI Cable (1.5M) - $16.80, though stock is limited and delivery seems unavailable.

Monster cable original price must be like $300

  • +5

I'm using a $5 HDMI to power my oled at 4k 120hz and it seems fine. Is there any point to spending heaps more on HDMI cables? I remember these historically being basically a scam at RRP price when 1080p tellies were common.

    • +2

I will only pay a bit higher price for long good quality HDMI cable, otherwise I have no problem.

    • Anyone telling you HDMI cables are just 0 and 1 and they either work or they dont are just boomers thinking they know tech.
This video is pretty good in explaining why you shouldn't be buying $10 cables off ebay https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rum8t32LkTQ

      • +1

I thought only boomers would be the ones buying cables that retail for $200 lol.

        • +2

Man, boomers are reaching 70; they're comfortable now. They're not buying anything unless its necessary.

Its the millennials who are in the prime 30-40 age group with more money than sense.

    • If your HDMI cable is over 10 feet long, it matters a lot what it is if you are hoping for 8K @ 60hz or 4K @ 120hz.

Under 10 feet, anything decent will do.
4K @ 60hz most cables will be fine.

If you need say 5 metres or longer for 4K @ 120hz - you really should consider an active HDMI cable. The problem is if you need eARC it won't work on an active cable as they are one directional.

    • Not all HDMI cables are built the same so yes, there is merit to 'spending heaps more'. If you're running a high spec, actually a decent 4k OLED then you may want to spend the extra $20 on a better quality cable. A 48gb 2.1 HDMI cable will utilise your panel to the full extent. Whether you notice this or not is a different matter entirely, but hey, you've spent that much on a TV why not spend a little extra and get the most out of it?

  • -2

Yeah lol no. Brand name can't add 50%
Happy to pay slight more for quality but not stupid amounts for brand name

    • +3

You consider this to be stupid amount for brand name? You need to have a look at prices for HDMI 2.1 cables in stores. This is pretty rock bottom for well known brand like Monster, just compare to the prices that Belkin are charging for equivalent product. Monster cables used to start at $100.

    • +1

50% is exaggerating, the cheapest alternative I could find from a decent manufacturer is this.

There are cheaper options on Amazon and they work great with my C2 OLED connected with PC and PS5.

    Here's CableCreation option - https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B08RDCPCVF/ref=syn_sd_onsite_de…

    • What's the reason for your negative vote?

      • -6

He has linked a bunch of random brands that no one has heard of before. OP sums it up pretty well: it's a 48Gb HDMI 2.1 cable from a less dodgy manufacturer than most in cabling with only a small price margin over a generic one.

        • +1

One of them is a CableCreation cable, so only one is an "unknown" brand.

At least with Amazon warranty you'll be able to test and confirm the claims/specs.

          • @MasterScythe: CableCreation is a good brand, or get Ugreen for slightly more. So even though this Monster price is pretty ok, it's a small margin over known brands, not generic ones.

        • He has linked a bunch of random brands that no one has heard of before

Linsar cable is literally sold on TGG, I just linked a cheaper way to get it through TGG Commercial.

You must be new to ozb if you have never heard of Cable Creation.

I found cabledconn from a previous deal here, and that is the only 'no one has heard of before' brand.

Ha… Didn't monster used to be THE go to dodgy over priced snake oil cabling mob?

    • +2

      They still are.

Their jargon is bull. Their reasoning is bull, and lots of their cables dont test amazingly.

      BUT

This price, if it meets 2.1 ratings, is actually a good price.

Denon had a crack (err bad pun) with a $500 ethernet cable, however it did appear to really work - here's a genuine review on Amazon

      • +1

Given the never ending drivel about expensive cables, this was worth me actually reading this whole post! Truly funny.

Electrical cables pass current. No less, no more. The only time any electrical cable will be of any impediment, is if it is too small in cross section over a given length and offers measurable resistance.

        • +1

Yep. Working in one of those niche "100k home cinema" type stores for a couple of years really opened my eyes to the BS companies spout.

Fwiw, I didnt sell the snake oil. I was mostly there to make the OEM prove to US how this is "better".

About the only premium cables we got after my scrutiny were from Chord, because while I couldnt hear a difference, I could measure RF noise rejection, and matched impedance; and they were more like "triple the price" of budget, not (literally) 100 fold like some other brands.

They also made an "active" HDMI cable (which…. Was passive….) But contained some very cool little filter boards, and some THICK strands. (We agreed to buy a "box" if they let me cut one up BEFORE we did)

It was the only 50M passive HDMI cable that worked every time. Most folks needed a booster.

I also highly rate THOR power boards; they actually DO contain a bunch of filter circuits, which can be measured. But not at their RRP, good lord no.

      • That review is AMAZING !

        • I didnt expect a cable review to turn into posession. But OK

          • @MasterScythe: Yeah really want to buy one of those cables now … that said there is a bit of a question mark as to whether it was the cable or possibly the deal that they struck to win the lottery.

  • +1

Monster have some certified ultra-high speed HDMI cables.

    This isn't one of them.

That doesn't mean it won't work.

  • No.

  • +1

Did OP really just call Monster "less dodgy"?

Anyone remember the time they used rca cables on their display booths and labelled it as the competitor's hdmi and said their hdmi was superior?

    • +2

They used to use "7 layers of shielding" and I got kicked out of a harvey norman when I pointed out their layers (they had an 'exploded' view cable) weren't connected to ground.

And that an ungrounded conductor is an antenna. You have 7 layers of noise collection….
      Lol.

      • You were asked to leave a HN store? I don't know if that's something to be proud about.

        • Ive been kicked out of HN probably half a dozen times "ruining sales" when staff are just trying to get comission, not help.

Iirc, the last time was when an elderly man who "just got wifi" was being advised not to get a 2.4ghz phone (rare, but that can be true), and he was asking if the 900mhz phone next to it was better (I own that one).

The staff told him NO its JUNK and he HAD TO pay almost double for a 5Ghz phone.

Poor dude was clearly a pensioner; so i butted in, corrected him, and was told to leave :p

          It was a good day.

    • I meant in so far as manufacture … not so much business practice :)
