I think the real bargain is saving the environment and $216 by not bothering with this deal, noting it’s mainly a paper-based print of the website edition (which is free).

  • +9

No thanks. If I needed toilet paper I'd just buy a bulk pack from Costco.

    • -1

You could also just pick up unsold NewsCorp papers. Might be cheaper and less effort than a trip to Costco.

  • +4

    That's still far too expensive.

  • +5

Not sure why the negs. This is a great deal for those who enjoy reading this in print.

    • +9

It would only be a great deal if it included the lobotomy required to enjoy the drivel that The Guardian puts to print.

  • +3

GE used to be good. It’s woke junk now. Even the trial of 10 for $10 was a waste.

    • +2

Imagine being an adult and using the term ‘woke’ in 2022.

      • +8

Imagine being an adult and not acknowledging what the term means?

Why can only left wingers have snarky names for the other side?

        • +3

It doesn’t mean anything. It’s a vague catchall for right wing grievanceposting, which they feel free to pick and choose from depending on what has hurt their delicate feelings today, just like a fat kid at sizzler.

          • +8

@jjcf: You have a point, it doesn’t compare to the direct inference of racist, misogynist, homophobe and transphobe your side throws at anyone who disagrees with them.

            • @Grok: Reasoned and reasonable argument often gets lost in social media unfortunately. That said, if the cap fits wear it, and more often than not it's a near perfect fit based on what people write and say. With obvious extreme exceptions that's only a small insight into someone's character. People are complex, mostly reasonable, fair and considerate.

        • Have you watched Sky recently? Every second word is woke or lefties.

You have all the snarky names you need.

Fortunately, in real life, no one uses those terms. The division exists mainly on social media and extremist news services.

Why is there even a 'other side'? Outside of social media and divisive services(primarily Sky in Australia) people exist on a spectrum and there is overlap on views.

Imagine being a simp for Gina, Murdoch, and Gerry.

          • +3

@ihfree: Is being a token conservative that gets shouted down by 5 other on a panel and the audience is an overlap of views? Or perhaps including Malcolm Turnbull or some other "conservative"as the guest to a panel creates this "overlap" you speak about, however if you were to pixalate his head and change his voice, you would think that his political ideology ranged from the centre to the far left depending on the topic. Speaking of snarky names….

            • +1

@heal: I have no idea what this show is you speak of. I do feel sorry for you if you think Turnbull is a far left.

What about Turnbull was left wing? His views on climate change? Are teals also left wing as they want action on climate change?

Views that Turnbull is left wing are more a statement on where the LNP is at and the ideology that the Murdoch press drives.

Is it the fact that he's pro-media Royal Commission? And that NewsCorp dedicates pages to tell you how irrelevant he is and does docos on him.

              • +1

@ihfree: Turnbull is regularly - and laughably - accused by the far/religious right as being lefty primarily because he wasn't a climate denier and supported universal marriage rights. His politics and actions as a Liberal MHR/PM suggest he's a moderate conservative, although he himself claimed to be a capital and lc "liberal". Not much evidence of the latter in his political career imo.

              • @ihfree: You can feel what you want, doesn't make it factual.

In 2015, it was revealed that Turnbull had held talks with Labor state politician John Della Bosca during the 1990s on a possible party switch, and that he had harboured aspirations in his youth to head the Australian Workers' Union, which is linked with the Labor Party. • -1

@heal: You're right. You can feel what you want.

Those who call Turnbull a left winger have been emotionally manipulated by NewsCorp. It's purely emotional.

That's the funny thing about Sky Viewers or those influenced by NewsCorp. For all their want of facts and common sense, they sure are emotional and easy to manipulate as a result.

                • -1

@heal: Your knowledge and understanding of politics is abysmal. It's not black and white, left and right as your spoonfeeders and Sky extremists would like you to think.

Prior to standing for election to parliament Turnbull was approached by interested parties to form a "middle" party. His answer was explicit: paraphrased - "I'm a Liberal". He joined that party - sadly now but a dark shadow of its former reasonable self - in 1973. To use a Keating observation - Turnbull was all tip, no iceberg.

The Mad Monk aka Tony Abbott considered joining the ALP while at uni. That makes him a lefty too according to your perverse logic.

          • @ihfree: Yeah, there's lots of clouds here atm

Woke == normal humanity and awareness of the obvious. That particular demographics think that's a bad thing and attempt to use it as an epithet is instructive.

The Guardian's hit and miss imo. Still light years ahead of the vast majority of News Corpse offerings, although that's a very low bar for "journalism".

        • +1

Woke == normal humanity and awareness of the obvious. That particular demographics think that's a bad thing and attempt to use it as an epithet is instructive.

Woke would be fine if those same people enforcing it didn’t want to shut everyone else down.

          Woke = intolerant
          Woke =virtue signalling

          • @Grok: Virtue signalling == another moronic rw slogan

In my experience those being shouted down are (mostly) extreme, ignorant, intolerant, and incapable of adult reason. There are exceptions, as there are also blinkered lwers.

    fake news

  • Left wing trash and unnecessary resource use and emissions with printing.

    • Haaa! Please tell NewsCorp and Fairfax to shut down printed media.

      • Who would give sh1t if Fairfax or NewsCorp did? A few remaining 90 year olds?

        • There are a few concerned citizens here who worry about the environmental impact of printed media.

Appeals to the person who thinks it’s independent, doesn’t see the agendas it is pushing, finds reassurance in their morals in it …

    • -1

Is that your opinion or is that what one of the talking heads at Sky/Fox/NewsCorp told you to think?

      • My work colleagues read it and tell me it is independent, are unaware of the pro death agendas it is pushing and think that assisted dying is compassion and abortion is a medical issue.

        • It's lucky that there's freedom of speech in this country and you all get along with such different points of view.

        • +2

Those are very complex issues, well beyond this site's purpose. Suffice to say that the hypocrisy of religions and their more rabid followers in respect of human rights, life and death is breathtaking.

          • +2

@Igaf: I can assure you that someone who says “I don’t know if I would, or I wouldn’t, but who am I to tell someone else what they can do” cares less for their fellow man than someone who tells them what they are doing is wrong. I can also assure you that nothing is more sacred than life.

            • @grasstown: The more religious people preach the less likely they are to practice what they preach. Morrison was a classic example. Here's a question. Who are you to decide what is right and wrong, which lives are important and which can be ignored? Are you living comfortably like religious leaders around the world, or as a pauper while sending all your wealth to the starving or medically-deprived masses? Simplistic? Undoubtedly, but no more simplistic than condemning everyone who chooses the time of their death irrespective of the circumstances based on your own religious beliefs. Religion's history is replete with persecution, killing and convenient memory loss. The world is grey, not black and white.

              • +2

@Igaf: God gave Morrison free will to choose to love Him or not. Morrison used his free will and I think he chose worldly things, power and success. Going to church does not make you a good Christian. The church is a means to grow close to God. All life is sacred. There is suffering and greed in this world because man has free will, to choose to love God or not. God created us to grow in a relationship with him and to love him. You cannot have love unless it is freely given. God does not make us love him. He gives us free will. We all have free will and many do not choose to follow god. The Jews were expecting a messiah to give them earthly freedom. God did not send a Messiah. He himself came and became incarnate. He showed us how to live. He called religious leaders hypocrites. Told them their hearts were hard. Gave freedom through righteousness and truth. Our creator came to earth, and we mocked him and crucified him. We didn’t want him taking our worldly loves from us. We said crucify him. We still do that to this day. The church has many who live differently. I again say, what love is there in your fellow man, to tell them do what they want. We need to be there for them.

                • @grasstown: I've heard that pious waffle a thousand times. It's a sop to religious hypocrites who preach but don't act, or in fact often act contrary to what they preach. Answer the question if you can. What are YOU doing to save lives? Giving away your wealth? Working with the less advantaged? How is it your right to determine when a person dies? How does your religion justify it's comfortable complacency and its history of violence, discrimination, promotion of myth and fear…….? Tell us your own brand of faith and I'll answer for you if you can't bring yourself to face reality.

                • @grasstown: Wow. I feel sorry for the your work colleagues.

Saying the Guardian is crap doesn't automatically mean you are on the News Corp cheer squad.

Fair enough. News is generally problematic across the board in Australia.

The Guardian contains the musings of an elite sect of pricks that should have been written in their diaries, not sold as news.

    • Elite in what way, or do you mean informed, educated, and/or proferring views that challenge your own? For the most part the use of 'elite' by right wingers is basically a moronic slogan. As the old saying goes, if you can't argue with facts, reason or intellect, try weaponising a word.

  • Don't mind the Guardian, yes, its lefty but not outrageously so.
I read it with an understanding that there's some inherit bias in it. (like every other media source)
I mostly like the culture sections, movie/book reviews etc. There're some good recommendations.
