Credit to member War - New Kogan Mobile Plans Require a Call to Cancel???

Update thanks to edrift -

For anyone wanting to disable the auto recharge:
I called up and just asked them to cancel it, which they did immediately.
Didn't have to wait long at all to speak to someone. All up it was probably only 2 minutes on the phone.

  • Instead of spending $3 for the student $1 deal with esim i can just get a free esim from this deal and activate the student voucher code on it

  • +1

    Cheers thanks OP

  • For the Sim Card ozbargainers, any good deals out there that meet these extra specifications?
Access to a 5G network (any carrier)
Support for Apple or Samsung Watch (included or for an extra fee).

    • +1

Support for Apple or Samsung Watch

This requirement will confine you to the big three (Telstra, Optus or Vodafone)

  • +3

Thanks OP. Didn't need right now, but given that I still have several unactivated Kogan SIMs, spun one up anyway. Getting VoLTE and VoWiFi (not unexpected, given recent comments) and 5G (which was unexpected).

  • Please can someone confirm, I can use the voucher just before it expires then have a month before I need to phone to cancel?

    • Just order extras and activate when you get it. They are free.

    • Yes. You get 30 days from the day you activate it. And if they have removed the "Payment Details" tab when you login to your account, meaning you can't delete them yourself anymore, their rep must cancel it immediately while you're on the phone with them. Which means you wouldn't want to phone to cancel earlier, you'd phone on the last day, when you won't need to use it anymore.

      • Incorrect. Please read the thread

        • -1

Incorrect. Please read the deal intro and his question.

          Relevant deal intro points:

          • First Month Free
          • No Lock-In Contract
          • Call to cancel anytime
          • Voucher expires at 11:59pm AEDT on 31/01/2023

          And his question:

can I use the voucher just before it expires

          Yes he can.

then have a month before I need to phone to cancel?

Yes he does. (Nearly anyway.) He cancels on day 30. (Activation being day 1.)

  • +1

    Thanks op

  • Do they have a live chat??>

    • No. No email service either

  • If I have S21 Ultra, can I choose esim option? And then can port back to Amaysim with their sim offer?

    • +1

      Yes

  • Possible to recharge this with a Flex plan after a month..?

  • Has anyone yet ordered this via eSim and actually used the recharge voucher over a Physical SIM card? Does this work?

    • Yes it works even on a used sim like a recharge. After that anytime you try to add any recharge code "You cant redeem a voucher on this plan, your plan is automatically renewed from nominated credit card". You can disable auto recharge but you cannot remove credit card. Best to be on the safe side and cancel the service once you use up the data. At least all the sims I got from the 1 cent deal will have a use.

      • What if you disable auto recharge then use a cheap voucher code to recharge ?

        • No you can't at all. The message pops up anytime you try to enter a code after you used the 40gb code. Disabling recharge does nothing.

          • @quill: Okay. Thanks for sharing your experiences

  • Thanks for your info. You said ''it works even on a used sim like a recharge…' So for example, if I have an existing Kogan prepaid account which expired (not recharged but can only receive calls/sms) and I can use this Kogan eSIM voucher to "Topup" as a voucher on my existing Kogan prepaid account?

    • Good question. There seems to be conflicting information on that.

      • I am really confused. The other question I have is: will using the new voucher codes revive your credit card details if you have previously removed them?

I want to try once, but I am not near my expiry yet.

        • I dunno myself. Hopefully someone can tell us. I suspect if you have deleted your card details already and recharge with a voucher then card details remain blank.

    • Well I used it on a sim whose plan expires in 5 days. Why can't you try it yourself? It's not like it will cost you anything. Worst case you have a free code you can't use on your existing sim. The voucher expires on the 31/1 anyway

      • Yep, it's true - worst case you will end up with free eSIM voucher code. Unfortunately I have currently no active Kogan Prepaid account - I all ported out to Boost so hence my question above but I will when Boost accounts both expire sometime next month but if someone done that and confirm then I can order both Uniday's $1 SIM and this eSIM for two sequence use for 60 days.

    • No, you cannot use code from this deal to toptop. Only the previous 0.1 or 0.01(can't remember which) deal's voucher can do that.

  • I activated its eSim a few days ago. Give me a few more day to finish all data. Then i will call to cancel.

I'm sure the cancellation should be no drama in Kogan. But not sure if I use a same driver license to activate another eSim

    • Every time in the past I thought Kogan's changes would stop these deals, or do something to block frequent buyers, they didn't. That doesn't mean they won't this time, but the balance of evidence so far is they won't care. With that said… someone has to be the first guinea pig. ;-p

Even if they do block us it probably won't be in the first few times.

And they know people activate SIMs in their name for their kids, partner, etc. So they won't have a problem with multiple accounts (using different phone numbers) - at least not at first.

      • +1

In the past they use debit card details to determine how many active accounts you have. I think the limit was activating 4 or 5 SIMS over 90 day period with the same debit/credit card.

  • Anyone know if kogan SIMs work hotspotting from WiFi eggs/MiFi?

    • +1

      Yes

  • Be warey when activating your esim from this deal. I hunted down QR icons that were not included in my Kogan email that must have been doctored.
I needed to chop up two credit cards after attempting to activate when scammers intercepted my credit card details and made purchases from my banks.
Kogan don't seem to be on top of the problem.

  • Can you turn off auto recharge online in this plan?

    • As has been clearly stated, no.

  • Thanks op

  • I have qr code in my mobile , how can i activate it in the same mobile as I won’t be able to scan the qr code

    • Use a laptop/second phone - or I think they provide some long code which you can paste into your phone settings as an alternative to scanning a QR code

  • it says cancel anytime, can we register this and use 2 month only then cancel?

    • I can't think of a good reason to, but if you're happy to pay $25 for the second month, sure.

  • +2

Just called Kogan to remove credit card and also remove auto recharge. All up it took about 6 minutes. Was asked a few polite questions about 'why' but just said I only needed it for the current month.
When I asked if I would still need to call in order to cancel the service, I was told YES, and so will need to call again.
It might just be possible that without an auto recharge and without a credit card that the plan would eventually expire without them chasing you for further payment, though I will err on the safe side and cancel before the 'recharge' date.
Maybe another keen Ozbargainer would like to let us know what happens if you've both had the auto recharge and credit card removed, but don't/forget to/ ring to cancel..?

    • +2

Mine should stop "on the midnight of 17/12/2022". I'll report what happens on Sunday.

      • +2

I'll report what happens on Sunday.

Stopped. No charges. App says, "You don't have an active plan, please click button below to renew."

    • I'd say if credit card and auto recharge removed then you're fine. It's prepaid. You wouldn't be required to cancel coz it's not post paid or a plan. That's my take on it. My understanding is that without cancelling you can receive calls for a further 60 days after the credit expires.

  • Can one order an esim for $0 and use voucher code for a spare sim one already has ?

    • Yes. I've already done it once, and I'm going to do it again. :)

      • That was esim voucher used for sim no problem ?

        • +1

Correct. (I once jagged a 5-pack of Kogan $2 SIM cards for free, so I've always had spares since then.)

      • How will you do it again?
Can I keep buying these and cancelling within a month?
Does new customer mean new mobile not new identity?

        • +1

"New customer" has always = "new account" or "new phone number" (the new number that comes on the SIM packets). Obviously they have esim now too, so they must provide a new phone number in their emails after buying.

  • Perfect option for porting out of Woolworths then back to Boost with the $200 cashrewards deal…thanks OP

    • +2

You can port from Woolworths to Boost without an intermediary. Heck, you can even port Telstra <> Boost these days without needing a special SIM or intermediary.

      • Oh,that I was not aware of. Thought it was still like the old days where leaving a carrier altogether was the smarter option. In any case my Woolies plan expires on Saturday, so no chance the Boost SIM arrives before then anyway. 10% off monthly shop has been good but the Boost deal is too good to ignore.

  • +1

Just to let anyone know I was able to use it to recharge another number, but even after removing credit card details was not able to recharge again with a different voucher code, whether it be the 1 cent/20gb plan or another free/40gb plans. So definitely going to use the remainder as throwaway one month Sims. Is 4 the max you can activate a month?

    • So you got the voucher for esim and use it to charge the unused sim card, which you can delete the CC detail? Thank you

    • +1

As it's been in the past, you can probably activate as many SIMs as you like, because each one is an account they hope you'll continue paying for in month 2, 3, etc. But there is a maximum of four activations using the same bank account. So just open more bank accounts. If you don't have Macquarie Bank, they have a really easy online application, no monthly fees, and is a Mastercard debit card (not a credit card).

  • -1

Do we have to call up to cancel ?

  • For what it's worth, I tried cancelling auto recharge and the staff on the other side said no it can't be done.

I'll try calling again and asking later

Edit: called back 20 mins later, got a different person who didn't make a fuss and was happy to remove card details and auto recharge.

    • +1

The HUCA approach wins again. :)

  • +1

    UPDATE: 16/12/22
Kogan have stopped the option to ring and cancel just the recharge. They can do it but it cancels the service completely, immediately. So you have to wait till the day before it expires and ring up and cancel. Checked and confirmed with 3 different operators. Just FYI.

    • Did you read the comment above yours? It seems it varies depending on who you get.

      • +1

Because his post provides specific info, all the same from 3 different reps, it's probably more the case that the earlier reply was a rep who hasn't been updated on the new process yet. But we'll soon see I guess.

    • Doesn't have to be the day before specifically. Can be any day before recharge. I'd say 2 or 3 days before might be good idea in case any issues

  • +1

I think if you used a credit card that now has no money in it, the service will just continue for incoming calls and texts only and eventually be disconnected just like the other telcos. I don’t think there’s anything to worry about.
Unless there is something in the terms and conditions that say that they can penalise or pursue us for money.

Mine also ends this Saturday midnight.

    • Let us know the outcome. Thanks.

    • +1

      What was your outcome?

One red flag I can see with this approach… If Kogan tries to charge, some banks have a "denied transaction" fee. We didn't need to worry about this before because WE were the ones deleting our bank info. Thus they had no bank details to try and debit us - so no denied transaction fee.

      • +1

As I guessed plan ended, but can still receive calls and texts. Received 2 texts - auto recharge failed and plan expired.
Looks like If you have no money in the account, only the plan will end , but can still receive calls and texts until disconnected just like the others.

        • +1

If you do get any charges, they won’t be from Kogan.

        • Thanks.

    • I gonna do it with my Up bank "zap" card, (virtual card that is easily cancelled and replaced). Got an s22 recently and haven't used esim yet, this will be my first🤪

  • Can I keep buying these and cancelling within a month?
Does new customer mean new mobile number or do they check identity?

    • "New customer" = "new account" or "new phone number" (that they give you so you have the option of activating, or porting your own number). You could for example buy 50x in the first month. But whether or not they will allow you to buy one, cancel it in 30 days, then buy another one in month #2 and so-on for a year or more, is still unknown.

  • I bought this morning and tried to apply voucher but it says voucher is invalid? So hard to even find a customer service number to call.
This is for porting my existing number into kogan. Anyone else got this prob ?

    • +1

      Call 1300 056 426

      • Thanks! Will do

  • Has Anyone had problems receiving the text from Kogan for porting in from another provider (boost/telstra)?

I can receive texts from other people, my wife on Optus(amaysim) network and from boost/telstra, but the automated texts from Kogan is no where to be seen.

I've called them both up multiple times, rebooted my phone, taken SIM out, airplane mode, etc.

Could someone on the Vodafone network (ideally a Kogan sim) PM me and send me a text message? I want to prove that works before calling them up again.

    • Thanks someone tested it for me. I received the text from Kogan mobile user just not from their automated system which is frustrating.

  • +3

I didn't find anything in their t&c's about chasing us like they would if it were a plan with a contract.

    Summary:

    • No lock-in contract
    • Plan auto-recharges monthly
    • Cancel anytime by phoning
    • We may disconnect the service if you fail to recharge within 110 days from the expiry of your last recharge
    • Prepaid customer agreements can be terminated by you, or us, and…
    • We terminate the agreement if you fail to recharge within 110 days after your last recharge

Then I contacted Vodafone livechat because they have made the same phone-to-cancel change.

Summary of what their rep said:

    • You can cancel by giving us a call.
    • You can also cancel at your nearest Vodafone store.
    • Or you get disconnected automatically if you don't recharge within 90 days of your last recharge pack expiring.

So it sounds like you could pay using something like one-use Revolut credit card numbers. Later when Kogan tries to charge for month #2 the payment gets denied. So the SIM gets disabled.

    However they also state:

    • We reserve the right to decline to enter into a purchase contract with you and may cancel your order at any time prior to dispatch of SIM cards.

This would be the next concern. Whether they cancel the orders of people who don't phone to cancel, but instead just let the debit get denied. But if they're going to block us for that, my bet is they'll start blocking people for multiple SIM purchases too.

    • I'd either phone and cancel a few days before expiry or port out using a free SIM. Telstra starter SIMs are easy to obtain for free. I'd say using a card with no credit for the recharge would not be the wisest move (but it might not result in anything bad).

    • Damn. Was bad enough Kogan Mobile making things hard, let alone now the dady company Vodafone also.

  • +1

Thanks. Yeah good point. Porting out a few days early is an easy way to cancel Kogan for most people, without phoning them. Well, we hope anyway. (I remember years ago several ISPs continued to charge after you churned away to another ISP… You still had to phone them to cancel billing or they continued charging, even though you had no service with them anymore.) You would expect this not to happen today, but with these changes, who knows.

Yeah I probably wouldn't use a $0 balance bank account/card either. It's possible that because it's a recurring payment, Kogan could attempt to debit the bank account more than once, like two or more days in a row, resulting in multiple "payment denied" charges from some banks. That's why I mentioned Revolut. Apparently you can create one-use credit card numbers with them. So it basically equals what we did before… Sign up, login, delete payment details, and Kogan can't charge us for month #2.

We'll still have to wait to see if they block repeat offenders though.

    • I guess if a debit card does get charged incorrectly you can dispute it while its pending.
