New Kogan Mobile Plans Require a Call to Cancel?

Basically this plan is a 40GB plan that is $2 if you buy their physical sim. $0 if you use the esim plan.

There is no lock-in contract, but the issue I want to know is why it states you must call to cancel. Has anyone managed to try this offer yet? Are there any other pitfalls that I have missed?

    a Call to Cancel

    Curses, my one weakness.

  • +3

I've posted the deal here. There should be no issue, also I wouldn't mind betting you can just port out with no need to call.

  • +1

Interested to see what people's experiences are. You wouldn't wanna be on hold for an hour.

  • x First Month Free Offer is available for new customers only.
Voucher expires at 11:59pm AEDT on 31/01/2023.

Assuming your porting number, the deal is basically one month free (once)

.^No Lock-in contract, but plan will auto-renew and recharge monthly from the date of purchase at the following prices (Small – $15 Per Month, Medium – $25 Per month). Cancel anytime by calling the Kogan Mobile Customer Service Team.

you presumably need to provide credit card as part of setup to make it auto-renew
so that's to catch, you need to be diligent in churning provider in timely manner after your time is almost up

living one day without your phone is out of the question for most so its hard to churn getting maximum days in month per plan
ie you dont use 100% of the monthly plan

  • whats the issue with calling to cancel?

    • +1

Did you try to call Qantas in the past 12 months?

    • +1

People used to buy a new SIM, delete bank details, use the data up, then buy another one. It was all done online, yourself. If you have to call to cancel, maybe they'll put an end to that.

      • +1

Yeah I want to know if this is still possible. I usually buy them for visiting family members, but I don’t want to run the risk of getting charged after a month’s time.

  • +1

I have a couple of visa gift cards with a couple dollars on them I use for signing up to offers like this.

If I forget/cant cancel? Whoops looks like the charge bounced regardless.

  • Kogan say you can cancel online but it's not there anymore:
    https://help.koganmobile.com.au/hc/en-au/articles/206806177-…

    • Have you bought one and tried it ?

      • +4

        Yes.

I have 2 active Kogan account now.

One with old plan and I am able to cancel auto recharge.

But one with the new esim plan today and I can't cancel the auto recharge.

Annoying as I'm just using it as a burner. Didn't even need it.

        • Happy days over. Time to look tor cheap data sim plan.

        • +2

Thanks for telling us. At least we know the situation now

i keep a debit card account with $1 for those card verification transactions, whenever it gets charged it'll bounce

can we just change the card numbers to cancel?

    • Yeah you could.
Don't you get charged a dishonor fee when it bounces?

      • had a debit card lying around from this offer with virgin money
no dishonour fees, presume most if not all the online only banks don't charge this fee

      • Revolut is good for this. Multiple free virtual credit cards.

        • Hm… I wonder what would happen if people used Revolut instead of phoning Kogan to cancel. (Whether they'd give us a bad credit rating, and/or refuse to sell more plans to the same person - which they might do anyway, if we buy it frequently.)

  • recently ported from kogan to boost and wouldn't let me port back to kogan says invalid voucher but lets me activate a new number, looks like they tightening up with new numbers increased difficulty to cancel auto renew

    • How long were you ported out from Kogan before trying to port back?

      • +2

22 Aug - ported from amaysim to boost
18 Sept - ported from boost to kogan
4 Oct - ported from kogan to boost
multiple attempts from 17th october to 1st november
thought this was over 30 days didn't do my maths
tried porting again, works now 🙂
clearly nothings changed, i made big boo-boo

        • +1

can you cancel auto-renew in your account settings page?
please also let us know if you need to call them when you port out again later. thanks.

For anyone wanting to disable the auto recharge:

I called up and just asked them to cancel it, which they did immediately.

Didn't have to wait long at all to speak to someone. All up it was probably only 2 minutes on the phone

    • Thanks for letting us know. So it's cancelled instantly then when you call. So gotta wait the whole month until the data runs out and then cancel as opposed to the old days of deleting card details after activating lol. So you didn't get any pesky questions about why you're cancelling etc then ?

      • +3

        No I think you misunderstood.

        I didn't cancel my service.
I only cancelled the auto recharge.

I will just let the service lapse and won't recharge.

They didn't hassle me at all.

        • +3

Thanks for explaining. So you just cancel the auto recharge and not the actual service itself. That sounds easy then.

When you login to your account can you see that auto recharge is disabled ?

        • +1

          Thanks edrift.

          Your comments were very helpful.

      • +2

Had to call to cancel. There is no other way around it. They did ask why I wanted to cancel. I simply answered because i wanted to. Cancelling the auto-recharge WILL cancel the service. However, unused portion will be refunded. I will wait and cancel right before the renewal day as I still need the number.

        • Haha good answer. I hate it when they ask why.

I usually just say I don't need it anymore.

        • Unused portion refunded hey. Say we use it for 15 days and not the full 30 days, how much money we get back then lol ?

        • You beauty! $15 back 🤑

I told them I have poor reception. Easy done! Thanks for the idea, OP!

  • Do they have a live chat?

    • No

      No email service either

"What happens if my plan recharge fails due to lack
    of funds on my card?

You will be able to manually recharge your plan again
through your Kogan mobile account or through calling
customer service on 12612 from Kogan Mobile number
or 1300056426 from any other number. You can
reconnect your service 60 days from expiry of your last
    recharge."

Seems to me you just sign up with a card with nothing on it or a virtual card so you won't need to call to cancel your auto recharge.

    • What is a virtual card?

      • +2

It's a disposable virtual card from either Revolut or Wise you can make, destroy, freeze and set limits on cards it is handy when signing up for things like subscriptions you don't want to renew, because you don't need to remember to cancel.

Revolut has a card that can only be used once and it automatically deactivates itself very handy for signing up for free trials.

Called Kogan. They said they cannot disable auto recharge. They can only cancel the service.

    • +1

      Same experience.

  • +1

I called today to cancel the auto recharge. They said I can only do it by having another plan of them.

If I chose to port out, I will incur termination fees

    • +2

      Please elaborate

    • What fees?

      • I'd ignore their post given that they have provided any details

    • I called them to cancel my number. The card have only 2 days left. Called for just for 2 minutes. I guess that's better way to do. Of cuz U will have a risk if U forget to cancel

  • Yes, same experience, simply cancelling the auto recharge will "terminate" the number - didn't think you could do that.

I explained that this wasn't in the conditions and that it states "no lock in" etc but she was adamant that it will cancel the plan.

"It's a trap" comes to mind. Anyway setup a reminder to port/cancel a few days before it renews I guess.

  • Same experience here. I've just put it in my calendar to cancel it the day before the expiry date. I didn't port my number this time because it was less than 30 days since I used my last Kogan voucher. Seems they are tightning things up.

  • I recently bought a Kogan sim to make use of the Catch double data plan.
I called at 0900 on a Saturday morning AWST. I was on hold for about 2 minutes (first in line).
Was able to cancel the auto-recharge over the phone without issue.

I definitely prefer the old website method though.

    • Every recent poster is saying that it can no longer be done. They're saying you have to cancel the service. Are you saying otherwise ?

      • It might have changed, but I last did it late December 2022. I'm on a year-long plan with Catch now.

        • Yes it's changed now

      • I called to cancel my service outright and they refused to because I didn't have the sim in the device I was calling from. They wanted to send a confirmation text to proceed with cancellation and refused to action anything without it. Even after establishing my identity with name, address and date of birth. They also refused to action disabling Auto Recharge.

So I escalated to a complaint (got a reference number) and they said a Manager would call me back within the hour. That didn't happen.

I called again after work and spoke to another CS rep who put me on hold to speak to their Manager and they went ahead and actioned the disabling of Auto Recharge for me. They said without recharge the service would expire after 90 days.

All up both calls combined took about 20mins. Certainly a whole lot more hassle than it used to be. But obviously it seems that YMMV, depends on what CS rep you get.

        • Did all they want was a confirmation code sent to the number ?

          • @finbar: I believe so. Don't know what the procedure was after that, only that they couldn't proceed without the confirmation text.

            • @wavesgreen: Thanks for the reply. They really don't want people to leave I guess lol. I got a spare USB somewhere I guess that I can put the SIM in and receive a text message.

              • @finbar: Kinda sounds like BS to me anyway. They confirmed my identity, they shouldn't need anything else. In the end they disabled Auto Recharge without needing the text confirmation.

              • @finbar: Cancelled another service this weekend, put the sim in an old phone in order to receive the confirmation code. Whole process took 4mins and the CS rep was very nice. As opposed to the rep I got when I tried to cancel my first service the other week.

                • @wavesgreen: I'll be doing my first cancel this weekend.

                • +1

@wavesgreen: Canceled my service this weekend. Only took a few minutes and was a simple process. Just had to identify myself and read out the code they sent. The service was disconnected immediately.

                  • @finbar: Nice. Yeah seems pretty straight forward with the confirmation code.

                  • @finbar: Wait can someone please tell me, So the new policy is we as customers can ask kogan to destroy our number immediately?

Talking about new customer - coming with porting option from another provider.
Bought a one last kogan sim for $2 last month for use in this month.

I dont want to pay for the recharge or autorecharge. Although i will be happy to have that burner service number cancelled.

If I want to have that service cancelled they will cancel it instantly ? no need to wait 90 days ?? - If So great way to have sim services destroyed, no need to wait 90 days anymore

And what If I want dont want to cancel the service, but I want to keep the number valid a little longer, Do I just put a insufficient balance card on the website ? and I have 19 days to port that number out to keep receiving SMS. ?

                    Thanks

                    • +1

                      @USER DC:

So the new policy is we as customers can ask kogan to destroy our number immediately?

Yes. When you give them the confirmation number they tell you if you choose to proceed you will lose any credit you might have and you won't be able to use the number any more.

Then they cancel your service on the spot. When you try to log into your account online it says Invalid Username Or Password.

                      • @wavesgreen: Thank you i will be porting my unwanted numbers to kogan to have those services destroyed

                        • +1

@USER DC: Also I did a test just now out of curiosity and texted the old number that I just cancelled on the weekend (the sim of which I still have in an old phone) from my main phone. No text was received.

  • Porting out before the auto recharge date is probably the only option to keep the number.

So it now costs $10 to buy an eSIM or SIM starter kit with 40GB

    https://www.kogan.com/au/buy/kogan-mobile-monthly-plan-vouch…

    • Yeah saw that this morning when I went to grab another $0 eSIM, guess I didn't stock up enough on them. Went with this deal from felix mobile, will see how it goes.

      • That deal no longer available. However there's usually $30 Vodafone starter kits going for $10 and nowadays Vodafone has unlimited data (shaped to 1.5mbps after threshold reached)

        • That $0 felix deal kept me covered on a couple of numbers to now switch over to boost sims that I bought for a profit.

I'll see what the landscape has to offer in another month's time, or might switch over to the $1/3mo Mate deal early before it ends mid-April.

        • Just got an email from felix with a $35 credit refer-a-friend offer, where both myself and a friend get a $35 credit if my friend uses my referral code to sign up.

So there's a semi-workaround… although it sounds like the credit is to be used against a "future purchase" rather than retroactively against a first month sign-up. But I might be misreading it.

I cancelled my last ever Kogan SIM. Thanks for the cheap internet for the past few years. At $10 a SIM I've now moved on. Was fun while it lasted.

    • Yeah kogan is a distant speck in my rear view mirror now. Am on the boost kick after enjoying felix's service.

Maybe kogan will look at their numbers and offer up better deals next month?

      • Perhaps. I thought $2-$5 was a reasonable price.

  • +1

If you want to cancel auto-recharge online, you can navigate to this URL after logging into your service: https://accounts.koganmobile.com.au/service/recharge/remove-…

It will show an error message, but it has probably gone through.

To verify that it has been processed, you can click "Apple Auto Recharge", then navigate back to that link. Error message won't appear the second time; instead it will say, "Your scheduled recharge has been removed".

    • +1

Thanks that worked like a charm.

    • I did as you said but it still says "Plan renews on the midnight of …." in Account summary.

      • Oh no – perhaps they've patched it :(

        • +1

Though it does say "auto recharge: disabled" So Idk which one to believe

          • @0power: did that work?
link from itsfree has "removed" the auto recharge but account sumnmary shows "plan renews on midnight" still

        • +1

For those who are still interested, I was searching for a way to cancel my Kogan auto recharge and found the link method above by @itsfree .I can confirm that the method still works and I was not charged when the plan expired.

Yes I also got the "Plan renews on the midnight of …." message but I think they just mean the plan expiry date.
