    The era of the netbooks is at an end, so these prices are properly fairly typical as they are run out.

    Also note the release of the Nexus tablet at 249+20, it will further push the prices of these netbooks down.

      A tablet is not a direct substitute for a net-book. They can do many of the same things now but many users still demand the familiar Windows OS and programs.

          yep :) my netbook was from 2006 just upgraded it recently and i have a tablet… once the MS tablets mature i'll replace both of them with one of those :p

          Who knows when will those hit $186, all we know with those Surface tablets is that they will be "priced close to competitors", Ipaids are ~$500 so "close" could mean a likely $599.

          A far-cry to $186 if you ask me.

      I disagree… Not everybody jumps on every band-wagon of the "era" that you imagine rules all.

      Small-handed students might on low budgets, et al. still value netbooks as useful tools, & so do we… even though we have more powerful, large-screen notebooks available for our use.

      Many still find tablets awkward, eg, to hold, etc.

        My wife uses a netbook for surfing whilst feeding an infant. The normal keyboard and normal screen (not touch screen) in a compact size is just what she wants. Tried talking he into a tablet many times. Loves her netbook for surfing and emails.

      I have a netbook, tablet and a powerful computer. What I wold say is that the netbook is really much suitable to do serious work compared to a tablet.It definitely cannot replace a laptop, as it can't handle works that are too heavy, but if you need to do serious word editing or presentation, this will be a much better choice than a tablet.

      This would make a great NAS! Three USB ports plus internal hard drive gives you plenty to play with. Extremely low power consumption, even less than the popular 'Microservers' that are on sale occasionally for around $200-$240. You could use it as a print server, torrent server, movie server, music server too. You can use VNC to control your server remotely if need be. Copying data from a USB 2 hard disk easily saturates a 100mb/s network, so unless you really need gigabit speeds this'll be more than adequate.

      Many people think 'server' means big ugly loud box sitting in the corner. In reality a server is whatever provides the services you need over your network.

      Another advantage of using a laptop server is the built-in battery backup. If power goes down, the laptop stays up.

          In terms of a netbook server what does wireless access point mean?
          Pardon the vague question but I'm wondering if I can use my netbook as a wireless bridge in addition to the torrents and print server function.

          If you're running Linux, then yes - it'll be a wireless bridge or an access point. Windows, maybe - it's got a network bridging option, but I don't know if it works with WiFi (I'm not sure it does the WPA handshake for the wired stations).

        The only flaw is that i don't think it has enough grunt to do all those features. They put fast processor in server for a reason.

          I think for a home server this should be fine. Quiet, Low power is generally a better option that huge grunt. Keyboard & screen can be a bonus too, and built in UPS is gold.
          I run a microserver (dual core 1.3GHz) and it does torrents, usenet, upnp/file sharing, firewall and some music and video servering. Even transcodes for airvideo server for the wife's ipad. Doing print server & wireless will hardly tax it.
          My 2c.

    The screen resolution of 1024 x 600 was always the deciding factor not to get a Netbook for me. Bought one for my wife about 3 years ago (at her insistence - it was white and shiny). She used it for a day then sent it back. We got a Dell something with Celeron processor for under $300 (€200) which has (and is still) serving her well.

        CPU should be alright, but I think it needs a faster GPU. No HDMI or DVI rules it out for me.

      I dont think the GPU on this would be suffcient for XBMC accelerated decoding.

      The AMD Fusion netbooks (E-50, E-350, E-450) are far more suitable.

      Also, no HDMI on this one.

      Fast? LoL. I have one of these and trust me… a SSD won't make it much faster. Save your $$ on the SSD.

      Faster, Yes, Fast, No.

      These things are so slow, and loaded with HP bloatware. Before i did a reformat using it to watch a movie was like watching a pirated DVD from bali, it occasionally hangs and splutters cause the HP bloatware decided to run some random process. After the reformat it still is slow.

        Actually you'll be supprise how fast it is with clean install windows 7 + 60GB SSD + 2GB (maximum for atom). I got an N270 and run office 2010 just fine. This is N570 so i expect it would be abit faster still.

        I have a HP Mini 5102 with N450 and 2G Ram, 366*768 display, dual boot with Windows 7 (clean install) and Linux. There is a noticeable sluggishness in Windows 7, but Linux runs great so that's what I mostly use. I luv my mini, but I do wish it had HDMI out.

    Hey, how is this netbook compared to the $199 Acer Aspire One D255 deal from COTD?

    I purchased that… reluctantly I admit, though but it was the best price for a brand new laptop.

    So? A bit off topic, please excuse but.. well, as an ozBargainer I'd consider buying something I want/don't need from just about ANY shop, as long as it's a bargain of course.

    So I hate seeing -ve for "AAARGH! <insert either MegaBuy/COTD/ShoppingSquare here> - Enough said."
    Just ignorance, my opinion is that: if you don't trust the store, don't purchase it!
    It's not worth a neg because others might still pounce because it's cheap, as long as it still classfied as a bargain. Of course, that doesn't mean you shouldn't neg if I a particular deal is not worth it because the store is marking everything as "OUT OF STOCK" and cancelling all orders after a 2 week wait! WTF???

    Back on topic, I would get another netbook (from Officeworks, duh) if this HP Mini is comparable (I mean better) than the Acer Aspire.

    It's causing me a bit of trouble at the moment, but I'm sure after reinstalling OS, upgrading to 2GB Ram and changing the hard drive… then it'll be more than fine to use!

    So question is… bloatware, functionality, operating system, specs, reviews, etc. What's the Intel graphics mentioned? CPU is more than fine for my needs though.

      looks like the Acer has 1.5GHz CPU and the HP 1.66GHz, given the speed (hahaha - the slowness) of Atom this can be quite noticeable

      p.s. I am sooo happy with my Lenovo E320 with i3 for $308 :)

          lenovo.com.au in march/april - normal price $499, student discount 5% = $474 minus GST (went overseas) minus $120 powerbuy cashback, actually $311, sorry about my math :)

          that was the time just before IB was released and lenovo had many coupons/codes (even here on OzB) but they only kicked in from $600 but I bought the cheapest model without it…

    HP Mini is fantastic. Build quality is definitely there and is a bargain! Been using one for about 2 years (N450). Wipe it with Ubuntu and give it a cheapie 60GB SSD and it becomes a pocket rocket.

    Bought it the first day at Officeworks for 176 after pricematch (they had 4 when I called, all the DSEs within 20 kms were sold out). Wife thought I just went out to throw away rubbish but I hopped in the car and got it for her (15 mins round trip as the OW is 2 blocks away from me). Picked up a 8 GB USB for 6.80 (they were at the counter).

    It's got 2 GB RAM (salvaged from a older laptop that's upto 8 GB) and I've put Win7 Ultimate on it and all the apps we normally use. Office 2010 runs just fine. It normally has about 1.2 GB free but if I put in an SD card and use Readyboost that should speed it up too. It doesn't feel really sluggish or anything. It plays Youtube full screen without issue and AVIs and MKVs are fine too. So that's pretty much 99% of everything she uses it for.

    I'll have to check out how Hackintosh friendly it is but maybe for next years 'OS upgrade'. Wondering if it will be able to Windows 8 (I think it can if the 1024x600 isn't a hard coded "NO" from MS).

      You can do a registry hack that adds a few higher display resolutions beside the native so that metro apps will run. Works with any netbook, but the higher res. will effectively be downscaled on the small screen & everything will appear 'flattened' & less sharp/crisp due to the extra 168pxl vert in 1152x768 up from 1024x600.
