There are reviews on the Amazon App store (I think it was a recent free app of the day promotion). Has in-app purchases I think, which may be a turn off for many.
Personally I don't think games that use the "freemium" model are necessarily bargains, they are just delaying payment and often require far more cash than supposedly premium games.
Would there be a reason for a game to access the phone call permissions?

Do you mean the read phone state and identity permission? I wish the identity and state part weren't lumped together, but it could just be to check if there is a call active and pause the game.
I got this as free app of the day last week on Amazon, not really my type of game though.
Well I have just checked, the Android version is not published under the name of the developer of the original iOS version. So the original developer must have just asked someone else to port the game for them.
But one thing to note is that the porter is famous for the Serious Sam series.
Almost no reviews, most of them suggest it is ported very badly and the list of permissions is very scary.
