  • @asc water tanks - Are any of these pumps suitable as a mains water pump? I have terrible pressure at my house and would like something to increase it across my property.

    • Hi mate. You can use the SCALA2 or the ESYBOX Mini as a mains boosting pump. What you want to find out is what the static pressure is in the home and the flow rate. A mains boosting pump can only boost pressure but not flow rate. Also in Victoria, you need a break tank, which means you can't connect the pump directly into mains water. Where are you located?

      • Single story house. 5 years old. Level block. I'm getting the water companies minimum of 9L per min flow rate at the tap at the meter, however if I turn on the shower (about 8m away), then the Mrs turns on the kitchen tap (another 8m away) flow and pressure drops to a point where neither is usable. Located Goldfields area VIC.

        • You will definitely need a break tank as your flow rate is very low. You will need to get about a 1000LT tank that stays topped up with mains water. The mains water line coming to your home would be diverted to the water tank (connected to a float switch) You would then run a water pump off the tank to feed the whole house. How many people are in your home normally?

          • @asc water tanks: Thanks for your advice - I really appreciate it! I didn't realise 9L a min was considered very low, I just knew it wasn't right as no house/apartment I'd ever lived in (15?) ever had this problem. I was assuming this was going to cost me about $2k all up in the end, but it's sounding like a lot more now.

I think our issue is that we're only about 50ft below the elevation of the reservoir which is 900m away as the crow flies. There's only two of us however it's mapped as a medium size family home. At times my pressure cleaner even struggles if another tap is turned on. Having a double head shower in the ensuite and two bathrooms is pretty pointless when the water flow is so low. Don't get me started on trying to have a shower midway through when the irrigation system flips on.

            • @BrutusB: For a 1000LT round tank, you looking at $855 including delivery. You are then looking at between $700 and $1000 for a good variable speed drive pump. Once you factor in a plumber to do the works, there is no doubt you'll be north of $2000. I would be going back to your water authority and advising them they are not providing your enough pressure or flow rate. They should subsidize some of this cost for you in my opinion.

              • @asc water tanks: How do we know the flow rate and pressure? I am in NSW, and we are also having low flow rate/pressure in our double storey house.

                • +1

@nosrad: You can either call a plumber or go to a shop like Reece and buy a Water Pressure Testing Gauge. They are about $80 from memory.
                  https://www.reece.com.au/product/water-pressure-testing-gaug…

You connect this to your garden tap near your meter and turn the tap on. This will then give you a pressure reading at the front property. You then get a 10LT bucket and time how long it takes to fill that bucket. If it take 15 seconds to fill, then you multiply by 4 for 60 seconds. this means 40LT/min.

You then repeat this in other places around the property and see if that changes.

  • HI OP,
Could you recommend the pump for garden use, basically need to pump the water from a 1000L water tank for watering the garden. thanks

  • @asc water tanks

Just hoping you could advise - we live rural (not on mains) - our water tank is large underground tank, slightly downhill and ~40m from main dwelling.

From what I can discern a 'multi-stage' pump is NOT suitable - as it needs to be gravity fed? Is that correct? Or if you prime it manually would it still have 'lift' capability? (life is max 2-2.5m)

Currently have a DAB Jet + 20L pressure tank - considering grabbing a backup.

    Thanks in advance.

    • +1

You're correct in saying that Multistage pumps are not suitable for suction lift applications. You need a pump that has a JET-venturi to be able to create that suction lift you need. You will still need to prime a JET pump at installation, but once it's primed initially, it will self prime after that. The J50/100 that we have going on special would be your best bet. They will be going for $350 with free delivery and a 5 Year warranty once the sale starts.

What model DAB pump have you got?

      • @asc water tanks
Thank you - appreciate your reply and guidance.

Ah thats what I suspected - I'll have a look at that J50/100 thank you for recommending.

The DAB, which has been excellent - is a Jetinox 62M - thankfully housed fully enclosed - so never missed a beat.

        • The JETINOX62M is quite a small pump. It's a big jump from that to the J50/100.

I would probably think the new pump might be too powerful?

          Anant

          • @asc water tanks: @asc water tanks

Funny you say that as by looking at the specs, I did think the same as well - I don't think the extra power is necessarily a problem, perhaps just headroom/scope/a tad excessive - as it's going to be used with a 60L pressure tank.

Do you feel it would/could cause issues? The only potential negative I could see is the higher power draw, but perhaps it's more efficient - and thus lower running time to 'refill' the 60L pressure tank - so no real difference.

I'm assuming none of the lower rated jet pumps will be on 'sale'?

Thanks again for your assistance - is a credit to you.

            • @Daniel Plainview: The smaller JET pumps aren't going to be on sale I'm sorry. There is definitely a higher power draw on the J50/100, but if you are running a 60LT pressure tank, then that will certainly help!

  • Can any of these be used as a pool pump?

    • Alll the pumps listed are domestic pumps, and not suitable for a pool. We do sell pool pumps. What pump do you currently have, or what kind of perforance do you require? I can give you some options.

  • Hi OP,

Would the SCALA2 be appropriate for a 4000L water tank currently connected to washer, toilets and future garden hose? Thanks

    • +1

The SCALA2 does not have an automatic mains switch over. This means if the tank runs out of water, or if you have a power failure or pump failure, you would get not water to these tap points.

Have you currently got a setup that has a mains switchover system? If so, what pump do you have?

We could put a mains switchover system, or you could make your own with a range of ball valves, but it's not the recommended solutoin.

      • +1

We just moved in and there is no pump or mains switchover system, I think the tank is connected to external tap and toilet ready but otherwise it needs to be connected to a mains switch and pump. Could we get a pump with mains switchover built in?

  • Hi @asc water tanks, I need to replace my old rainbank/davey hp45-05 double story home with 2 toilets? thanks

    • Are you looking to replace the pump with a new Davey Rainbank KRB1 with HP45-05, or are you looking at an alternative pump?

  • +3

Gave a green plus just for OP's replies. It's posts from store reps like this that make Ozbargain great. MOGA!!! XD

    • Thanks mate. 👍👍👍

  • Hi OP. Another one:

Do you have a pump that can move warm / hot water but not a circulator pump? Does not need to be food safe (removing water from a cooling chamber to drain), 20+L/min. Thanks.

    • What is the max temperature you are talking about? Is around 40-50 degrees? Also does this pump operate 24/7? If not, how do you require the pump to turn on and off?

      • It dumps a single large batch of water once per day. May peak at start up to around 60C for a couple of minutes, but generally will settle down do <30C, only runs for about an hour per day. We can organise a level switch.

  • looking to run some hunter pgp ultra off a wanter tank which is a good pump to get? want to run as many as possible for a large field

    • +1

We need to find out how many spinklers we can run on a single run. To do this, we need to find out which nozzles you'll be running and what pressure you will require.

At different pump operating pressures, the sprinklers will give a greater throw (radius of coverage).
As you increase the radius, we increase the flow rate, which means less sprinlers per run, and more zones.

Take a look at this link below to start working out what you will need in terms of nozzles.

      https://www.hunterindustries.com/sites/default/files/ic_pgpu…

      • blue 3.0 hoping to run 10-12 per zone

        • +1

Thanks. For the Blue 3.0 running at 3bar, you are using about 11.4LT/min.

If you look at our M60/120 pump that will do about 110LT/min at 3 bar pressure (keep in mind this is the performance at the outlet of the pump, not at the sprinkler)

If you put 9 of these spinklers in a line, that require the pump to output 102.6LT/min at 3bar. The only thing you need to consider is the loss in the pipework as you travel along 30+ meters. I would say it's probably safer to put 8 of these in the line with our M60/120 pump.

          Anant

          • @asc water tanks: cheers!

any difference between a jet and a horizontal pump with the sameish spec?

            • +1

@QuQ: Yes definitely. A JET pump has a much steeper curve which means the pressure performance drops away quickly as you increase the flow rate. A multistage holds pressure a lot better and that's why it's favored in use for irrigation systems. Plus multistage pumps are about 4 times quieter than JET pumps.

  • Thanks OP, do I need a breaker tank for NSW suburb of Yagoona/Bankstown?
I am need of getting more pressure to my double storey home

    • My understanding is that in NSW you don't require a breaker tank. You can plumb your pump directly into the mains line feed. You are best to contact your local water authority to confirm this. I would recommend doing a flow rate a pressure test on your home to find out what you are currently getting, and then we can see what we need to do, to help you achieve better water pressure.

      • Hmm..
Looks like Sydney requires some backflow protection according to this
        https://www.sydneywater.com.au/your-business/meeting-your-re…

So it looks like a Break Tank is necessary? Or does the SCALA2 3-45 have the ability that lets water go in one direction?

        • +1

You can get dual check valves or one way valves which are very inexpensive and then don't require you to install a break tank. Here is an example of a dual check valve from Reece. Normally your Dual Check valve or NRV should be Watermarked, but your plumer doing the installation will be able to source and advise you on this.

  • Hey @asc water tanks would you happen to stock the hoses Grundfos use in their pump install videos? https://youtu.be/hCbk-m1j88s?t=147

    (Trying to tag you, struggling.)

    • Hi mate. We do sell braided hose kits. They come in 1 meter lengths. For the 1 meter 1" braided steel hose kit, you are looking at $95 each.

They are rated to work up to 1000kPa.

  • I won’t be able to get a plumber to have a look on site until early December…
