  • This or eero?

    • I read eero pro 6 is really good mesh system but comes with price as well.

  • How do you register for an account?

    • I think you have to call them to set one up.

Nah you don't. Just follow the instructions in this thread. I got my commercial access just approved today.

        • Ok thanks. I used the steps and now waiting for approval to come through. :)

For those wondering what the difference are between the TP Links you've seen previously:

    Deco X20 (Wifi 6)
    880 MHz Dual-Core CPU
    AX1800
    5 GHz: 1201 Mbps (802.11ax)
    2.4 GHz: 574 Mbps (802.11ax)
    MU-MIMO / OFDMA
    2× Gigabit Ports per unit
    Dual band

    Deco S7 (Wifi 5)
    1.2 GHz Quad core CPU
    AC1900
    5 GHz: 1300 Mbps (802.11ac)
    2.4 GHz: 600 Mbps (802.11n)
    MU-MIMO
    3× Gigabit Ports per unit
    Dual band

    Deco M5 (Wifi 5)
    Qualcomm 717 MHz Quad-core CPU
    AC1300
    5 GHz: 867 Mbps (802.11ac)
    2.4 GHz: 400 Mbps (802.11n)
    MU-MIMO
    2× Gigabit Ports per unit
    Dual band

    • Bought the M5 before earlier today. Should’ve gone with S7 based on this.

      • Can always cancel order, if you bought via Amazon.

    • Can we even reach 400 Mbps in Australia yet?

Also need to consider the design/size difference between these models.

yeah, I can technically get 1000/50 (ABB) where I currently live, but I'm not sure I need that much bandwidth to work from home.

      • +1

yes, I am running on 1000/50 after getting the free upgrade to FTTP. Now my WiFi is the limiting factor when downloading things on portable devices.

    • +1

Good comparison. Also worth noting with the M5, you can't direct devices to specifically select the 5ghz or 2.4ghz networks. Basically never had an issue with this except for some IoT things which can be finicky. There is a workaround, which is to temporarily disable one network band, and I'm not sure if the other Deco models are richer on features.

Besides that, I've been using the M5 for 4 years now and have only had to "reboot the router" on one occasion, which is amazing. Every other wifi setup I've had to reboot at least a few times a month, if not more.

      • +1

You can now select a preferred band on a per device basis. Ironically, I believe only the m5 has the updated firmware to support this.

        • Oh wow, thanks. I should update my firmware then.

        • +1

Hmm looks like you still can't manually select the wifi channel? That was another issue that was annoyingly missing in the M5. Some older IoT stuff only operates on Ch1-11, and the deco seems to love sitting on Ch 13 with no way to force it to another channel. Very niche issue, but yeah…

          • @eggboi:

with no way to force it to another channel.

Seriously?? I hope that's not the case for the x68. Need to be able to change the 2.4GHz channel!

            • @CVonC: I guess if that's your only misgiving, you could buy and play around with it, then refund it if it won't work properly. Very clear cut reason for return as they don't specify any limitations that may be dealbreakers for some people. Hopefully they have added that feature to newer models. Very good and reliable other than the reduced features.

    • Are these wireless speeds? So if im on 1000/40 I can reach 1000mbps over wifi with the S7?

      • Only if you had a receiver capable of 3x3 802.11ac which I believe there are very few of. MacBook Pro I think might be the only one.

You’ll need wifi 6 or wait for wifi 7 to really achieve gigabit over wireless. Again, it depends on your receiving device. Most can only do 2x2 and 80mhz channel width limiting you to ~800mbit.

  • If I have an M5 can I add on an S7?

    • All Decos address compatible with each other.

      • *are compatible

  • FYI, HomeCare or HomeShield is not supported on this model

  • Thanks OP

  • Im looking to exit optus and use spintel BYOD. Can i plug this into the nbn box and use it?
