  • Would this be worth upgrading from a Dell Inspiron 3505 (Ryzen 3450U)?

    • +3

While it's a substantial jump in CPU performance it depends on what you are using it for. If it serves your needs for now then there's not much reason unless you can sell your existing model for a good price.

      • I use it as an all-around PC; light photoshop work, light video editing, office work, etc. I was hoping to sell my laptop for an upgrade, just hoping it's work it (mostly worried about the build quality)

        • +2

          Acer build quality sucks

          • +2

@Fobsessive: Acer: around 3-4 years and the case falls apart.
Asus: many go 10 years plus.
HP: Over-engineered, usually after 4-5 years fan goes bezirk.
Apple: Good looking but serial number locked parts, good luck with 3rd party repairers.
            Dell: Can anybody report longevity?

            • +1

@payless69: My Dell XPS going perfectly after 10 years except battery died 3-4 years ago

            • +3

@payless69: Acer: metal builds hold strong. Recommended budget approach. Plastic builds don't. Accept or avoid.
Dell: battery dies first. Plastic builds get creaky but seem to hold. Workstations (Precision, Optiplex etc) refuse to die.
HP: There's no telling what'll go first, but fans will kick up over anything. Products in a line (Envy, Pavilion etc) fair a little better.
Asus: easy win out of these brands for laptops. Recommended if budget allows.

Good value for money. My son's Nitro is still working after 5 years.
          Couldn't be happier with my Nitro5 with gen11 intel, GPU, & fully upgradeable (extra 8GB RAM $35, extra 2TB M.2, extra SSD, USB-C thunderbolt, 144Hz screen) https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/674196?page=1#comment-1159…

Why would you pay >2x for something that will be outdated in 5 years? DDR5 is 2x faster, PCIe5 2x, PCIe6 will be 4x, & so on.

    • +1

      I wouldn't

  • Battery life?

    • Reviews say about 7 to 8hrs of productivity. This however is depends on your screen settings and application workload.

    Bro

    THe specs state

    TFT screen

    Which are SHIT,not IPS.

  • 'Vega 7 gpu', anyone got a nvidia comparative model?

    • +1

Vega 7 is an iGPU. If you want to compare to an NVIDIA dGPU, it is better than an mx130 or 230 mobile GPU. There are also plenty of videos on YouTube if just conduct a search on 5500u Vega gaming performance.

Thanks OP Bought 1. Is it easy to install extra 8gb ram as I haven't done it before?

    • +1

Yeah, it should be pretty straight forward. Unscrew the back, plonk in your DDR4 SODIMM RAM stick and you should be good to go. Screw back the back. Make sure your laptop actually detects it through task manager. Done.

      • Disconnect the battery first.

        • +1

Turn off the machine first and unplug charger if charging. Some initial steps we can (hopefully) safely assume don't need mentioning.

Have not been following with CPUs… is this comparable to i5 or i7? Is this more than enough for high school courses?

    • to the i5. Will suit for high schoolers. No need for anything better apart from the IPS screen and touch.

      • Thanks! Is this IPS though? Some says it is based on specs from other pages.

        • +1

I wouldn't rely on it being IPS. I bought an Aspire 5 earlier this year, and while the Acer site said IPS, it came with a TN panel (confirmed by support). Had charging issues too, so returned it.

The ones from Amazon US seem to have IPS panels.

In saying that, I liked the build, the upgradable RAM, and the extra slot for a 2.5" SATA drive.

    • Should be more than fine for high school. Most they're doing is light work with a photo or video editing program but that's only if they're doing an IST-related subject. Otherwise it's web browsing and word processing, which this is more than capable of.

There are different versions of i5 and i7. The AMD Ryzen 5500u is a six core processor. Most current 11th gen U series i5 and i7 are quad core. The 5500u will have better performance than an i7 1165G7 in multi core workloads. Please refer to Passmark for the Ryzen 5500u vs 11th gen and 12th gen U series. Ryzen is also more power efficient at 15w TDP than what Intel has at the moment, 28w+ TDP, so better battery life if the laptop watt hours are similar.

      AMD Ryzen 5500u scores 13157
      Intel I5 11th gen U series scores 10431
      Intel i7 11th gen U series scores 10490

      • Thanks! So in other words, it's quite a good buy. Hopefully the screen is good as well.

<$600 for a functional PC for production users / web surfers, with upgradable ram 🙏🙏 WIFI 6 and even a USB-C port. I wonder how Acer make any money from this once the retailer and the tax man take their chunk. Nice find OP

Edit: Yes, the screen isn't great but its <$600

  • No USB C PD?

  • Would buy in a heartbeat for basic home use if I needed it! Happy with my Lenovo ideapad 5-15, i5-1135g7,16gb, 512ssd, was on sale from $1400 to $1000 but mine only has 3 total USB ports and this has 4! (Yeah I'd grab the extra 8gb ram too)

Trying to decide between these two as well. Any thoughts?

      • Acer more storage.

      • Def this one - much better processor

    • +2

      Acer

I have a 10 year old acer laptop still works great.

Intel Core i5-2410M and NVIDIA GeForce GT 540M
      8Gb Ram 256Gb SSD

  • Lowkey kinda weird that they appear to be using a non-usbc charging input in 2022, especially considering they literally have two usbc inputs on the chassis. Great price otherwise.

    • +1

      It has one USB-C port.

Not having PD/DP on the port enables them to differentiate from their more expensive models.

      Would be nice though.

      • I mean sure, but it feels like they're intentionally putting effort into making their system shitter, when with less effort they could serve a better product.

  • 5500U Zen2 5600U Zen3 :) kinda silly naming for the 5000 laptop CPU's

  • My Harvey Norma ran out of stock and they offered me HP pavilion Aero instaed
