35hrs on the way home, you will wish you paid a bit extra

    • +7

Yep I booked return flights back to UK and paid a little bit extra for 25 hour travel time each way - as apposed to 35.. it's worth it

    • +3

Every extra minute on the way home counts. Desperation makes you wish you paid extra.

      • +1

What desperation? xD I'd love to get some extra time to explore the city where I have a transfer… Especially if it's something like vietnam, must be amazing place.

    • +20

Depends - I actually like to break the flight up and since these arrive early in the morning there is basically a full day where you can go check out Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh before having to get back on the next flight. But I know some people don't have the luxury of taking their time

      • Out of interest, what do people do in this instance? Can you typically check your luggage in for flights so late in the day or do you store them somewhere? I'd also be a bit nervous oersonally getting out and exploring a city just for the day knowing I needed to fly out soon (moreso in terms of delays or issues getting back to the airport etc)

        • +9

You don't need to worry about your luggage as it would be checked all the way through. Also means you don't need as much time when you get back to the airport, as you don't need to checkin, you just go through security and passport control. You probably actually need a visa to head out of the airport in Vietnam. I know it's not for everyone , but I definitely take the opportunity to get out and see another place on my travels. Last did so in Mexico city with a 10 hour stop - was plenty of time!

          • @CheapFlightHunter: Ahhhh OK gotcha! Thx mate. I'm flying back from Europe to Aus through Tokyo, but flight from Europe to Tokyo is Japan Airlines and flight from Tokyo to Aus is Qantas, so might not work anyway! Yeahhh I would imagine you would need a Visa if you were going to exit the airport. If you've got enough time, why not though?!? Probably not for me as I'd be stressing about being late and missing the flight back due to unforeseen dramas, but worth doing if you can!

            • @jay889344: Doesn't matter about change of airline - if all on one ticket it will be sent to destination.

            • @jay889344: Years ago I flew with JAL & Qantas from the UK with 18 hour stop overs, they put us up in a hotel! I got my passport stamped on arrival from memory. Narita is quite a distance from central Tokyo, but I still got to see a small bit of the country and get some sleep in.

            • @jay889344: in Japan it's quite common to have luggage lockers in places like train stations, also double check you're flying out of the same airport, you might have to go on a tokyo adventure if you're flying in/out of narita & haneda separately :P

        • Massage? It's cheap there! Plenty to do for the day!

        • +1

I had an 8 stopover in Hong Kong one time and I packed my swimmers and went for a swim and shower at a public pool in the middle of Hongkers. I got on the next leg of the flight feeling awesome.

      • +6

But, you would need to get a visa for your Vietnam excursion.

        • +4

E-visa is easy to obtain online and costs 25USD

      • Book into airport hotel, have a swim , something to eat, nap, then do second leg. Or book an extended layover and see another part of the world.

        • Is it possible to book an extended layover for similar price? Or you need to book two separate one way tickets, making it a fair bit more expensive?

          • @snoopydoop: Multi city flight,
            Mel-sgn
            Sgn-CDG
            CDG-Han
            Han-Mel
It should be about $60 extra each way.

            • @Stewardo: Thanks so much!!

EDIT: Lowest I can get that route on a quick play around with dates in May is $1600, but I'll keep at it.

              • @snoopydoop: Mel-sgn 11/5
                Sgn-CDG 13/5
                CDG-Han 28/5
                Han-Mel 31/5
                $1274 on Expedia

                • @Stewardo: Thanks so much, might actually book this. Would be way more relaxing splitting the trip up.

                  • +1

@snoopydoop: If you only have an extended layover on the return leg (Hanoi) it’s $1218 this would be the better layover to extend as it the one with the 14 hour transit.

    • +2

usually id agree but the flight times for this give a good enough break where you can bugger off into the city for a bit and come back for your flight.

yes you'll be tired. but its better than 5 hours stuck in the terminal.

    • I have a 20 hour stop in Singapore, no choice with my business rewards :/

      • +7

Singapore is lovely, easy to go between the city and airport, and no need for a visa - get out and explore for a bit!

      • Yes. Plenty of time to explore Singapore.

Plenty of cheap hotels near Changi village and close to the airport too

    • I flew back last week and spent 17hrs at Hanoi airport lounge. Time went pretty quickly and the lounge was half empty with comfortable chairs. Food wasn't bad either and wifi was fast.

I could have gone out to visit the city but I had too much carry on luggage and was wearing winter clothing so it was an easy pass.

  • +6

I would also book directly through Vietnam Airlines and not a third party, for peace of mind.

    • Can thay price match ?

Username from an American document, rhetoric from the American right-wing internet pipeline

Get off the internet and touch grass in the country you actually live in man

        • Get off the internet

Woah, you sound triggered. Let me get the tissues for you…

          • @1st-Amendment: Yeah wtf is their problem? You have raised legit reasons for booking direct with the airline.

            • @starspawn: It's his word choice, very pretentious.

            • -1

              @starspawn:

              Yeah wtf is their problem?

It's the nature of Snowflakes, they are emotionally fragile people that triggered by even the slightest opinion that differs from their own and lack the capability for any rational discussion. Imagine being triggered by someone's username, how much of a precious princess you have to be to lose your shirt over that?
              😁

          • @1st-Amendment: Oh look, another American buzzword. Maybe one day you'll develop a personality beyond what the right-wing from a completely different country feeds you

            • @ankti231:

Maybe one day you'll develop a personality

You're the guy that got triggered by a username… imagine being that fragile…
              🤣🤣🤣

              • @1st-Amendment: "triggered"
                "fragile"
                "snowflake"

It's like you can literally only communicate in a few words you learned from the American right-wing

If you book this and you're unlucky enough, I might even be your pilot.

    • +3

Can pilots get passengers upgrades? 🙏

      • +7

can't even get my own upgrade lol.

        • +17

Can you say "We would like to welcome our OzBargain customers flying with us today. Enjoy your 35h trip home you cheap bastards" lol

          • @Yoo: "Not cheap, financially responsible is the word i'll rather use". Also I've spend 48h on a trip from Saigon to Auckland once to save some $$$ so… 35h isn't that bad.

          • @Yoo: This would be awesome.

    • -2

Nah these are next year fares….

    • CDG is a bit of a gamble.
Scoot to Berlin probably adds a few days to your life?

  • +2

I found if you go in Mid June- Mid July, you can fly there, premium economy one way and economy the other cheaper than just straight economy both ways. Sydney to CDG.
Family of 2 adults and an under 8 year old for about $4500. About $5200 for premium economy (return is Z class fare) for about $5300.
    Still 35ish hours back

Anyone experiences with Vietair? Relatively unknown on au market and not exactly brilliant reviews online 🤔

    • I trust the people here more than I trust the reviews online tbh. People only write reviews (generally) when they've had a bad experience, or unless you've had an unusually amazing experience, like I did with JAL when going to Paris for which I took the time to write a massive review.
I'd like to know if anyone has taken Vietnam Airlines too and if they could share their experience. These prices are too tempting

    • Can help you with this, plenty of travel in VN with relatives over there. Comparative with our airlines, think of it as Vietnam Airlines=Qantas, Bamboo Airways=Virgin Airlines and Vietair=Shitstar. So if you decide to fly Vietair, expect delays, risks of cancellations as well as missing a luggage or two. No meals included, probably a good thing.

      • There's no such thing as Vietair.

      • Is Bamboo Airways better then Vietnam Airlines? Otherwise, your comparisons might be out of date ;)

    • No Vietair. It's Vietnam airlines, same as Qantas here, the main airline in Vietnam. They fly directly from Vietname to USA, EU, AU…. so you are in good hand. The food is much better than many other airlines.

      • Which one is the good hand and what's the other hand up to while flying?

    • Safety and comfort score very high!

  • @CheapFlightHunter is there any options available to extend the layover in Vietnam to a few days? Thanks

    • Yes would like to know too

      • I did a quick search with multi-stop and it appears for an extra ~$80 you can extend your stay in Vietnam for a few nights.
I figure if you are paying ~$60AUD for a visa you may as well stay longer than a day.

        • Hi, I hadn't looked into it but yes great idea!

        • From the same site momondo?

        • +1

May I ask where you found that information? I would love to have a few days stopover in Hanoi too.

Sorry just see the multi stop search option. Is it directly on VNA website?

          • +1

@amorphous2111: I found the multi-stop to be hundreds each way more on the VNA website and I'm hesitant to do it through a 3rd party for that reason

            • +1

@anawth: I was able to book on VNA website with similar price ($70 more for stopover) compared with Aunt Betty, but the cancellation fee is lower.

  • when are fares going to drop for next May-August? Or will they just increase?

    • Trying to find my crystal ball… hang on, i'll report back
