    • oops sorry! fixed

    Graphics Intel HD Graphics 530 + GT730 1Gb

the 7500 has uhd 630, no? strange typo on their part. anyway, this looks like a really good deal for folks like me who intend on using these machines for transcoding content

    • +2

Technically HD 630, it was changed to UHD 630 in the 8th generation. From memory is just a rebrand but the UHD might reach higher clocks (but same features). If you're meaning for Plex hardware transcoding then it'll be very decent 🙂

      • thanks for clarifying!

  • Anyway to get 16GB ram?

  • +1

    Display port out only.
    No HDMI

Factor in a few bucks for a DP to HDMI cable.

    • Has HDMI.

      • I don't see one in the ebay pic.
Not trusting the description lifted from HP site stating ports are optional.

I picked up a an HP 800 from bne, very similar, has 2x DP only.

        • +1

          Listed in the specs.

          • -1

            @Dave Id: Don't believe it.
It would be pretty rare for a generic office spec build to have 'DisplayPort + HDMI + VGA + DVI'

            • +5

@battler: The specs list a GT730 card, i think it's likely the VGA HDMI DVI are on the card.
The images in the add are stock so don't show a card.

            • +1

@battler: Which brand of GT730's didnt have HDMI?

    • DP to HDMI Converter @ $2.87 on FleaBay is a cheap fix regardless

  • Any i5-8xxx PCs available?

  • I guess this is better than the Nvidia Shield TV, for those wondering.

(I haven't been able to find another good deal on a broken gaming laptop, in order to salvage it, and use it as a dedicated HTPC. Might have to go for Plan B; build a new desktop system inside an old VCR case)

    • +1

What OS and software do you install on the PC for it to act as a HTPC?

      • +1

I use Linux Mint, Firefox, and Kodi; bonus of Retroarch.

      • There's a lot of great Linux-based OS out there… but I'm targeting Windows10 Pro.
        brain dump:

You can build the HTPC into the TV-Stand, an AV-Receiver, or an old VCR case. Or even build it like a PS5 Console inside a SilverStone Raven (rvz02) or similar cases. Then select your hardware carefully.
You can set Windows up to just launch into a Program Fullscreen upon boot, and you can run commands to automate somethings. There was a really good setup that I copied when I built the "Hellbox", but it seems that person has deleted their YouTube account (and lo the videos).

But in essence, you want to dump the system into Hibernation Mode when you turn the TV Off. And when you Wake the system, it also turns on the TV. All in all, it will make you wait for 20 seconds, so it's not as quick as the usual 10 second experience. And you want to grab the Logitech K400 for some quick typing/surfing from your couch, an Xbox Series X controller for gaming, or something else like 8bit Do (DS5 is very good). You can run use a Capture Card if you want to plug in the Aerial/Antenna cable into your HTPC. And run Big Box or Kodi, and you can set it up to view Photos, listen to Music, watch Videos, your Movie Collection, stream Movie/TV Shows from your nominated person, or even access Live TV from the Internet (or Capture Card). There's also more slots you can arrange, and custom themes you can go nuts with. So you can set a favourites tab, and put in certain Applications. Perhaps a dedicated Emulations tab (from Atari to Switch). And a Games tab for your Native Windows games. The difficult part is really the Sleep/Hibernation part, since you want to conserve power, but make it seamless… and it's also kind of difficult to set it up to have multiple user accounts, so that different members of the house have different Game Saves, TV Show Playlists, and Resume Spots in Movies, but some have successfully done so (like the video I was trying to find from 4 years ago).

One great addition I like, is having a "Lift Up Coffee Table". Then you can put in a full-sized qwerty keyboard and mouse inside. And you can game like you were on a desktop. The worst part is having one long USB cable that you can snake from the TV, under the couch, and into the Coffee Table.

Something like the above setup will keep you away from the endless streaming wars and console walls. And if it's a miniITX system you can start off with a modest RAM, CPU, and GPU… and you can upgrade them hugely in years to come, in the same system, which would be like buying a new console, but with more performance and unlimited backwards compatibility. My Hellbox (from i5-2400, 8GB, GTX 750Ti) achieved that (to i7-3770, 32GB, GTX 1650) which is like upgrading an Xbox One to a One X. I've heard some great things from others too. Example; X370, r5-1600, 16GB, RX 470 to the likes of r7-3800, 32GB, 5700XT, or some further to 64GB, 5800X3D or 5950X, and RX6800 or higher.

However, you can't really do this upgrade path with a Refurbished Laptop like I initially suggested. But a Laptop has big advantages when it comes to having all the power options built-in, a "backup" battery, being much more efficient, fairly quiet, and a small package. Most people opt for a Mini PC, but you don't get the big advantages from a Laptop, and you miss out on the cheap upgradeability of miniITX (eg X670). However, I really do fancy that new MINISFORUM UM690, it's basically a TV Box with grunt, x86 and Windows capability. I stuffed around with eGPU on a TV, and frankly its an expensive and poor experience overall that I don't recommend, and it won't get better until someone takes that route seriously. I see most people instead having a dedicated Work/Gaming setup with monitors/desktop, and they now use GeForce Now to stream locally from their PC to their Nvidia Shield TV, so they use the AndroidTV interface for everything except Web Browsing and Gaming, which are streamed (but having your Desktop PC running 24/7 is wasteful and expensive if you're not earning crypto-coins).

It would take more effort to configure and require the addition of a remote

    • +1

I mean… it’s different to a shield. What metrics are you using to say it is better? For a home theatre environment I’d value noise and ease of use, which definitely puts the shield as a better option to this.

If the pics on eBay are accurate; this has two low profile PCIE slots and a serial port.

If anyone's home labbing, you could add a couple of four port NICs and turn this into a nine-port firewall with a serial port for out-of-band configuration; maybe run some docker containers as well.

    • Can you recommend a genuine Intel 4 port NIC at a decent price? I've been looking for an i350-T4 but eBay seems like the only place to find them and I can't tell what is fake, what will only fit a specific server type, or whether the HP and other branded ones are true Intels. Needs to be low profile too to fit these machines.

  • can this do 4k video through displayport ?

    • Yes!

    • You can do 4k via DP even on old 4th gen Intel HD 4600 Graphics.

  • Absolute bargain

  • +2

I was thinking of hacking this to make a cheap gaming pc as it has a pciex16 slot, by just hacking in a bigger psu and buying a cheap 1070 or 1080.
    Nope.
HP proprietary power connectors 4pin for cpu and 4pin on motherboard, also pcie slot probably on provides 35w on this not the usual 75w.

  • Can this be plugged in to a dell docking station?

    • As a rule desktop boxes don't work with docking stations as such.
They don't generally need to be portable and don't have the dedicated docking ports notebooks get.
If your docking station plugs is a USB one you might be able to use it though.

  • Would this fit a low profile GTX1650 to turn into a budget gaming machine?

    • +1

In theory it might fit physically most GTX1650's can pull 125watts, this is to much for the standard PSU in these.

    • +1

Unlikley because it seems there's only place for one slot card from its mainboard manual, while 1650 is dual shot. A single slot card like 1030 or 6400 may fit.

  • What is electricity consumption (without monitor)? Looking for a low cost replacement for my AWS workspace.

    • +1

      I have a slightly different model 800 G3 with i5 7500, with 8gb ram and 128GB M.2 SSD, likely very similar.
When booted into Windows 11 Pro its idle power usage on an external Belkin socket meter is under 7watts.
It goes up of course when actually computing.

Check out Grays Online for this type of reburb SFF PC. I picked up the Lenovo Idea 3 with 10th Gen i5 for $250 plus fees.
Grays usually has Lenovo's, HPs and Dells available including bargain Lenovo notebooks.
Only problem is you do need to bid for it, so prices vary

    • That was a great purchase!

  • Is the optical drive blu ray or DVD?

    • +1

no optical drive in this configuration, it's just the plastic cover

  • Keep in mind that a replacement power supply will be very specific.
