Best to buy now and think later, the model with the catcher just went back to $48ish from $24ish.

    • the model with the catcher

Out of curiosity, which model are you referring to?

      • These. They were $24-something when I added them to my cart. Surprisingly my cart price didn't change.

        • Mine come up as 48.04 - do these hold the part that you have cut? Ie cable tie excess?

        • +1

woah - what a simple but clever design. I have chopped bits all over the garage

          • @ChatCPT: I have offcuts all over the floor of a car I still need to vacuum up after a rearview camera install lol, this would've been handy.

        • +2

Anti-static ones with the same catcher for $36 https://www.amazon.com.au/gp/aw/d/B000ZEETWG

        • +2

          PS: Back to $24.90 now.

          • @dmbminaret: Just thought I'd mention it again, those are the stainless steel ones which aren't as hard as the tool steel ones. The SS ones won't rust so would be useful in damp or marine environments but they won't hold an edge as well as the tool steel ones.

    • Otherwise you'll be like me, and have paid $40+ for a pair of kleins a month ago when I needed them.

  • You can cut your nails with them too though.

    Really? Do they work well?

    • +1

Yes they cut well and cleanly…but in a straight line, which might be better for toenails.

      • +1

I use my electronics side cutters for my toenails all the time. Gross? Maybe, but they're the best nail clippers I've ever used 😄

        • +1

Me too. Have done for years. I use my older crappier side cutters rather than my precious Knipex ones 😀

          • +2

@Corgsta: I use my good ones. My toenails aren't that gnarly and if the cutters get damaged cutting toenails they can't be that great!

            • +1

@Fappo: 62 on the Rockwell Scale, they'd need to be Superman's nails to damage them.

              • +1

@Quarn: Or some thick, yellow, gross old people toenails!

  • Very mixed reviews. Anybody use these and can comment?

    • +11

      Very mixed reviews

      How are they very mixed? 5,807 reviews, 87% 5 stars, 8% 4 stars, 2% 3 stars, 1% 2 stars, 2% 1 star.

I'd say 91% 5 and 4 star reviews makes it overwhelmingly positive.

The cutting edges on mine are sharp and finished well. They're certainly sharper than the very popular Hakko CHP170, but I've also bought cheaper cutters that are just as sharp. The difference is how long they will remain sharp. The Knipex ones are designed with a slight misalignment so the two sharp cutting surfaces don't slam into each other when closed which would blunt them more quickly. The 62HRC steel is really hard too.

If you're not a frequent user then the cheap ones will probably work just fine, but if you use it frequently I'd definitely pay the little extra. At $48 it's a harder sell but at $24 it's a no-brainer for me.

      • I read the reviews, one five star review said the pin fell out, and the top Australian review said arrived with jagged edges, that's why I requested a comment from an actual user, thank you, purchased.

        • +1

If a pair arrived with jagged edges I'd assume some idiot/arsehole has tried to cut inappropriate wire with it, damaged the blades then decided to return it. And Amazon just onsell this damaged crap too often.

      • I'm not quite sold on the misaligned blades. I mean, I want a perfectly flush cut, not a very slightly misaligned cut. I couldn't resist and bought some anyway, so we'll see.

        • +1

I'm not quite sold on the misaligned blades. I mean, I want a perfectly flush cut, not a very slightly misaligned cut.

The forged model might be better for you then. Being forged, hard stops can be designed into the pivoting mechanism so the cutting surfaces will not be able to slam into each other, negating the need to misalign them.

          • @eug: Thanks. I prefer the thinner head of the OP cutters though and I've used and been happy with the CHP/Hakko cutters for many years. For 20 bucks the knipex were worth a shot.

    • i use the vde version. Solid in every way other than the gap near the pivot point when fully closed (see my comment below).

    • Have owned a pair of these for a few years and not very impressed, the blade has not held up well and i barely ever use it.

Knipex are supposed to be the pinnacle of German engineering.

I think they are, but for high power bolt cutters with extra hardened steel… or heavy linesman pliers, i would NOT buy Knipex tools for fine work.

Save your money and buy some decent looking Chinese stuff for $5 if you are only cutting thin wire or cable ties.

Do a bit of reading from various trade forums, nobody really talks about Knipex other than their heavy tools, especially the Cobra series are well regarded, not these.

  • +3

I know it's comparing apples and oranges but for light use (ie 3D print cleanup) you can also get a cheap cutter for under $5 or 5x for less than $20 if your tools tend to go walkabout.

Link to all the Knipex deals too

    • I gave up trying to look through all the items! So many on sale.

    • Literally bought some Knipex CoBolts from Amazon last week… Perhaps I need to work out how to do an after-the-fact price adjustment on Amazon.

      • +1

You might get a promotional credit added to your account if you ask nicely ;)

  • +5

Quite a few of their things reduced. Big reductions on these:

    Cable stripper

  • The "Buy 2, save 12%" promo isn't working for me. I add 2 items and the discount isn't applied.

    • +1

Should apply once in checkout. Worked for me

      • +1

        Silly me. Checkout works, thanks.

        • You can see these in your order history? I haven’t been able to get my orders through.

          • @spasto: I've got no confirmation or record in orders. Usually instant. Not sure what's going on.

  • whats a good value wire stripper for occasional use ?

  • I picked up some 200mm Knipex bent nose pliers for $29.64 and some cute 150mm Cobras for$30.90 (they took a few bucks more off once I checked out). Decent price.
I was tempted by the side cutters but I already have enough of those.

  • +2

My absolute favourite side cutter is also on sale! And i've also misplaced mine so I will be buying

    https://www.amazon.com.au/Knipex-74-02-180-Leverage/dp/B0001…

  • Personally I just use these ones from Jaycar:
    https://www.jaycar.com.au/precision-127mm-angled-side-cutter…

  • tha one that came with my ender 3 is really sharp

  • +3

Do they come with an alarm to stop my kids using them and taking chunks out of the blades? I swear they try to cut diamonds with them or something…

    • Whatt

      • I buy nice side cutters. My son wrecks them.

  • I don't really need any tools at the moment, but would want to have them when/if I buy a house. Targeting within 1 year if everything goes to plan.
You reckon this is amazing deal to jump in now, or OK to wait(not sure how regular are these deals).

    • +1

If you think would use them regularly buy now otherwise hold off.

    • +2

These cutters are for electronics and are only up to cutting soft or very thin wire (or toenails) so they're not really an appropriate general DIY household cutter.

      • They are also good for finishing off plastic cable ties as they cut flush and don't make a sharp protrusion like standard side cutters do.

  • I have the VDE version of these. Its bloody annoying that the two blades don't close completely near the pivot point. You end up with a circle near the pivot point.

So, as an example, if you are cutting 8 pairs of a cat5/6 cable, you cant do it reliably without missing a wire or two every time.

Wrong tool for the job I suppose but my previous cutters close the gap near the pivot point.

    Hope this helps someone.

    • +4

Definitely the wrong tool for the job. These are precision flush cutters, not cable cutters.

  • +1

the vde ones are super cheap as well.

    normally $86

Keep enough of them and you can make a wallet, then rub the wallet and it will turn into a briefcase.

          • +1

            @Fappo: Username checks out.

            • @eug: ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

  • +1

Worth noting that you get the 12% off for buying two of any knipex that have the promo. I just bought the flush cutters and some pliers and got the 12% off at checkout, and earlier I bought some cobras and some pliers in a different order and got the 12% off at the checkout.

    • +1

Not just knipex, burnished ESD super knips with lead catcher and Wera hex keys for me :-)

  • Thanks Quarn. Bought 2 :-)

  • sigh I already have at least 4 electronics cutters that I rarely use, but in the spirit of ozbargain, I ordered another one. At least this one is an ESD safe version https://www.amazon.com.au/gp/product/B000ZELZO6

    • If you wanted a similar blade hardness this would be the ESD equivalent.

      • Argh..oh well. I hope it will do. Got it for $27. I see it's price had gone up.

  • +1

These are really great up until your apprentice somehow loses the spring and claims it wasn't him, then they are not very good anymore.

  • Been waiting for this deal to popup again. Picked up one of their products. Thanks

  • Thanks OP.

  • Thanks OP!! Just bought a pair. I've been wanting to buy these for years to flush cut cable ties for bicycle and moto, but could never justify the $57.50 from Sydney Tools.

    • BTW the version with the catcher is about $4 more.

      • Thanks for the video. That catcher is cool

      • So many models..

If anyone is wondering the difference between the 78 71 125 you just mentioned and the 78 91 125 posted earlier like I was, looks like the 71s have "shear cut with controlled micro cutting edge misalignment", the 91s have "cutting edge with small bevel for an almost flush cut"

        • +1

Yup, the 71 has a finer edge. The 91 has a small bevel to strengthen the cutting edge so it can cut harder wire. That means it will be a tiny bit less flush and possibly a little less sharp, but have stronger edges.
